Thanks very much. Although I'm not claiming to be squeaky clean, as sometimes to see old lifts involves going into old places. Mostly I do enquire to get permission to film, or without you knowing I'm actually with a lift engineer (I don't advertise it as it doesn't add anything to the video). I do have a video which I've yet to edit which I'm hoping will not ruin my integrity involving a derelict building, so if I do upload this then hope I don't start getting too many negs, but this is where untouched classic old lifts are, which is my main interest - old lifts. I do however respect everyone until such time as they no longer deserve it (my moto I guess!). Thanks for your comment. By the way, what do you think on the subject of me uploading a video similar to the "nine floors of terror" videos that I uploaded a few years ago? I do respect people's opinions as this channel is really for my followers and fellow youtubers - if everyone disapproves then I won't upload it (I'm scratching my head on it right now!)

i really liked the nine floors of terror series. There is something to be said for the thrill of exploring a derelict structure. In some ways it's fascinating because you see parts of the past frozen in time, but there is also an exciting sense of adventure to be had from accessing areas and equipment that were previously kept locked away from curious eyes.

Matt, they kept the original Gearless machines on the bank of 3 passenger lifts. (Very large inverted Express DC gearless units) they would have been very difficult to remove. No reason to think any different on the goods lift. OTIS modified the passenger lifts with their latest technology drives of the time.

So these large inverted motors would resemble the ones in my original Express DMR video shown at the beginning? Interesting, thanks Pete.Actually one more question, if Otis installed this lift in modern times (i.e. 2000-2010), do you think they would have designed it with this type of speed in mind, or do you think it would be a lot slower? I'm just wondering if any of the old DMR infrastructure is the reason why this lift is so fast? By the way, I'm taking "motor room" technology and not MRL here.

Hi Matt, OTIS would have kept original machines because of the logistics of removing such a large bit of kit in an occupied building. These machines are incredibly robust and would have gone through insulation checks on the windings to make sure they were not going to have any problems further down the line. They would have kept the double wrap 2:1 roping arrangement and fitted a modern controller with a suitable frequency drive. Remove any existing shaft equipment such as transducer plates and terminal slowdown switches . Fit new Governor and probably a bi-directional safety gear to meet the current regulations. They have probably kept the speed as original as there is no need to slow the contract speed.

I don't think they would make them this fast nowadays unless it's very high rise like 30+ floors. For e.g. Look at my intro and this building with TWO gen2 lifts covering 18 floors each - MAD, the wait wasn't too long, but if this place was busy then the lifts were stopping on most landings all the way down - quicker to walk!

My building has three elevators, and 17 floors. Since there are a lot of university students there, waiting for them can be quite frustrating on Friday, and Saturday nights. Lately, it seems like at least one of them has been going out of commission on a regular basis!

This building reminds me exactly of another 1975 block that's now apartments - the same exterior tiles which are very rare (and signature damp concrete issues), window proportions, staircase design, all the small details. I suspect it was the same architect - was this a somewhat brutalist building possibly up north? The building I know is still full of fascinating original and disused HVAC machinery though the room has been somewhat trashed. When the building was converted they just locked all the machine rooms. Sadly the lift machinery is updated to something generic. It also has a spooky basement with a bottle of acid in it (the old battery room), remnants of the co2 system, and the original electricity distribution board is still in use scarily enough

The DMR was Express Lifts solution to high speed high rise lifts. Amazing but very complicated piece of machinery. Would have loved it if it was still there, but I was years and years too late. Thanks for comment Tiago (I still like your name by the way!!)

have you seen motor rooms at the base of the lift shaft? if theres a video could you point me to it (only your video of course) Ive watched your stuff over and over and can't get over the DMR lift! Do you remember we spoke about the bennie floor selector photos? I think it was bennie, either way they were for a movie you dint get round to, would be nice to see as i am sure others would agree, the floor selectors are the most interesting. Also, that express floor selector you gave to mrchay, do you know where i could obtain one? purchase off you or eBay somewhere? c:

Hi. Yes, I do remember the photos message, but I'd admit that I forgot about it until you mentioned it. I've got so much stuff to edit at the moment, it's like a never ended sea of videos which I don't have time to do. And then when I think I'm on top of it, I find some more stuff to film that I want to get up on youtube ASAP. OMG, it's like I need a month off work to catch up on my video editing!! Anyway, "at the moment" I've got some stuff to edit for our kickboxing class that I have to get on with, then we have a completion that I'm also doing the footage on. I'm going to have to make a list of things to do, and I'll try and get this one on it. Did I send you any photos of the bennie lift photos that you mentioned? About the floor selector, I do actually have another one of these now, so I suppose one could be classed as "spare" but it doesn't have the electromagnets on it anymore that pulls the tabs that activate the carriage. Therefore it doesn't work, but I'm not interested to keep that one.The other selector I'm going to be doing a very special video on soon (I cannot tell you when "soon" is though, as its a bit like "how long is a piece of string" at the moment!). Where about in the world are you? Judging by your accent I guess it's not the UK?

Im sure that floor selector would be absolutely amazing to see, And i have to say you are one of the best people for staying on top of your comments, work and youtube! Ive never felt so included in a youtube channel. I put comments on heaps of peoples videos but never feels like I'm talking to them. You however, it feels like i know you! And time off work would be excellent for you haha. Im just going to go watch the schindler videos and DMR videos another few hundred times. The photos you sent were for the animation of the floor selector i believe... ill have to find them now as i have no clue where i saved them! From what I can tell, that may not be the same lift as it looks like an older mod. The display on the outside appears to be from the 80s and the interior from about 2005/2006.

Hi James, thanks for the comment. You could be right about the displays, as yes, the green vacuum fluorescent displays were used by Otis before the Otis2000 panels, so could have been modded twice or more before we go back to the original DMR model. The lifts at the front of the building are still using the WHITE/RED Express arrow lanterns with the bell in them. These are Otis2000, but glad they kept the original lanterns (or perhaps these were modded in the 80s/90s as this is the generation for the lanterns?). I was going to back-track and film them on the way down, but I was "shown the door" by the security guy! I'm sure that you'll agree that the wooden door frames and doors probably go right back to the age of the DMR lifts. The other passenger lifts also have the same doors with windows in them, but the internal doors don't have windows and look quite new. I should have filmed them on the way up, but as I said in my video, film the "objective" first, then if you get chucked out or the camera runs out of batteries at least you don't leave disappointed :)

If I ever get to go back there, I'm going to bring my laser measuring tape thing to measure the height of the floors, then work out how many metres per second the lifts travel at, but this time not go down to the basement haha! There are other lifts in the building (also modernised) but with the original Express lanterns still working (+the bell). I was going to film them on the way out, but security nabbed me before I could. These were also fast, the landing doors had the original windows, but new doors inside the lift without windows. What i'm going on about is, because the service lift still has windows you can get a much better feeling for speed and yes, that ride straight down was cool!!

Its a crime that these have been ripped out. You don't see engineering of that standard very often these days. The lacing of the wiring looms alone is a work of art.... Very sad.

I have found out that a place in Sydney, particularly Australia Square, may have a DMR express motor room, however it states it was modernised in 2011 by schindler. I don't think they would take out the control system from the top of a 50 floor building, but i really hope it is still there! Tomorrow i will try get some footage of it for you! Maybe, JUST maybe, ill get a clip of the motor room ;) Anyway, better not get too enthusiastic. Also, in a place called town hall, there are old lifts which have glass shafts. I will get some footage of them too :) Would you like me to send the videos to you?

+Julian Curmi the DMR lift, if it was still there would be an incredible find but I very much doubt any of it would be left. Do you know anyone that works in that building that would be willing to show you the motor room? If its an old lift then yeah could do but does it meet the mrmattandmrchay criteria HAHA! The reason would probably just be because the engineers aren’t trained to work with the 70s DMR equipment anymore. Not only that, but spare parts would be very difficult to find. They may also want to improve reliability and energy efficiency. While old lifts are awesome, there’s usually good reason for them to be removed. 50 years of service is very impressive compared to what is common nowadays.

That is the fastest lift I've ever seen. The lifts at Hull Royal Infirmary were the fastest here, but no windows. Where is this? Ps, our lifts in our flats are getting ripped out and the third lot of modern ones since built, are going in.

+BBOY MIKE THE DOGE thanks for the comment :) actually "express lifts" was the name of the manufacturer and was bought by Otis in about year2000. Lifts are all bound to be replaced due to availability of parts and lack of engineer's knowledge of how to fix them. But yep sad when they go

One of my family members works at an old police station tower, the lift in there is indeed 'kind of' old. They used to use it to carry the prisoners in the building. But now they're planning to bulldoze the building. :(

I'm not sure if the guy believed what I was saying by the way he was looking at me, but I wasn't really worried as I didn't lie to him but I was hoping for some understanding, but nope! I didn't win him over and I was shown the fire exit door! Fair enough I though! I was going to film a lot more on the way out and show the other lifts in the building which were still using the old Express UP/DN call lanterns and bells, but if I'd gone back in then I think they would be watching me this time. The old type displays are fascinating. For example I remember an 80s Otis lift with a matrix display, but under closer inspection the "digits" were individual bulbs! (Looked like 240v neon bulbs).
