Here are some really useful phrasal verbs (and idioms and adjectives) with the verb TO BE. Phrasal verbs are often confusing and this is especially true of those with the verb TO BE. It's important that you understand them and, with some practice you can use them too.
This video was recorded in on the streets of London. Especially the West End. I hope you enjoy it.

Hi there! I’m not sure whether anybody still follows these old comments, but I would like to suggest one phrasal verb with “to be up to” with Mr Gideon-I would not say he omitted it, and if so, certainly deliberately - but, well, he might as well have added it anyway - and this is “to be up to something” in the sense of being able or willing to do something. Example: “are you up to the challenge?” “I doubt that he is up to the requirements of his new assignment.”

@josephcote6120
@josephcote6120 4 жыл бұрын
Neither of those really sound right. You can say "I felt afraid" or "I feel sad" This shows a mild feeling. It depends what you mean. If you're speaking only about yourself, you might say, "I've never been so scared" (Does not need to be literally true) or "I was very scared." if you are speaking about a group you were in, you might say, "Everyone was afraid, but I was the most scared of all."

@josephcote6120
@josephcote6120 4 жыл бұрын
Most natural would be, "I can't meet you tomorrow, I will be doing homework." but "I am going to" can be used as "I am going to be doing homework" Any sentence that describes a future action can be used. "I have a doctor's appointment" I am going to Spain for a week" "I have made other plans already."

Depends on when the decision could have been made or was made. "The choice was fish or beef, it was up to me and I chose beef." (Past) "London or Paris, It's up to you." (Present) "You can buy a car or go on a vacation, it will be up to you." (Future) "If it was up to me, all parking would be free" or "Were it up to me..." (Subjunctive)

Hi Gideon!, thank you so much for one more mega useful lesson with such good examples, and as I live here in London I can assure those expressions and idioms are used very very very often, some of them I already knew and used them. After I repeat your lesson 3 times I'm confident to use tomorrow those which are new for me. I've got a question about the last phrasal verb: "To be around", you say that this phrasal verb means "to be available" what I didn't quite get is if "to be around" involves one different meaning as a kind of proximity in the space. Could you please tell me if my example (meaning "to be available") is ok? ...."I'll be around tomorrow in the afternoon so we might meet any time between 12 p.m and 5 p.m.
@LetThemTalkTV
@LetThemTalkTV 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. I'm glad you found it useful. Yes, your example is correct. "To be around" is used for proximity in space. "I'll be around your neighbourhood this evening" and also for availability in time. "If you want to call me, I'll be around between 5 and 7pm".

@josephcote6120

Yes (American at least) It means someone is not included in a group that shares information. "I was still working hard on the big project when they announced it was canceled. Everyone else had already heard the office gossip and had started work on other things. I am really out of the loop."

@plantagenant

Yes.
@josephcote6120
@josephcote6120 4 жыл бұрын
The usual phrase is "off key" when they sing wrong notes. To just say "off" really isn't used much. You would probably say the specific thing that you didn't like. "She sings like she is being burned alive." But if the problem is minor or hard to describe one could say "There's just something a little off when he sings the low notes."
