When I first saw the belt loops I thought you made a machete bikini, reminded me of the maxpedition canteen bikini from back in the day. Thats a perfect description of the those Tromontina's the Mora of the machete world. Modify away... want a lanyard hole drill it...want a contoured handle sand it...want a scandi section on the blade put it on. No worries, modify away since your not working on a $65+ machete. P.S. ...and you thought they could not beat Alabama 🤣
@Reallybigmonkey12 жыл бұрын
Lol, bikini sheath? Actually I was low on wide webbing and had an excessive amount of that small webbing so I gave it a try. Man you definitely made me a Tramontina fan. All these years I thought they were too cheap to be good. Thanks for the eye opener, thanks for the machetes and Go Dogs!

The Tide is my team and I figured that the Dawgs wouldn't lose to them again after the SEC championship. It didn't bother me that Bama lost because Kirby did good things for them when he was DC. So I am glad for him and the Natty was well deserved. Besides, it was won by another SEC team. Roll Tide! and Go Dawgs!

When I was little, I saw how the workers on the farms used machetes. The machete was his grass cutting machine. Work in the sugar cane. And everything on the farm. Then at Christmas they cut the suckling pig for christmas dinner. And they use a triangular metal file to keep the machetes razor sharp. Always have a machete around. Thanks for the video and the cutting tip.

In jungle this is considered more important than the parafal. It is what put food on table. And last a long time. There's an old brand here in Brazil called cometa, they made good ones too but the factory closed I guess. We call it facão (big knife) or terçado.tramontina is a south region factory. It is used in several types of vegetation here from jungle, desertic vegetation, cerrado (savanah type vegetation)....

Love your videos JUST as they are. They have a real authentic look to them, not fancy. You do a very good job of including the viewer (me) the way you setup your camera and move around in front of it. Do what you like, I will be happy to let you know what I like. I knew a guy from Costa Rica who led scientists on trips into the jungle to study insects. He told me that in the jungle they only cut the vegetation vertically to make a path, never sideways. He said there's not enough room to swing a machete sideways in many places.

The very first video I ever watched of yours was the one when Oregon Mike sent you and Nick different Survival equipment,and you had to spend the night out utilizing just what he sent you and you didn't know what it was until you opened it up while you were out in the field,and after watching a couple of your videos,I was determined to find out what kind of gloves you were wearing.I had never heard of Nomex gloves before!If I've got shoes on and pants on I've got gloves on,and out of all of the KZbinrs that I watch that practice Bushcraft,Survival skills or wild camp, you're the only other person that wears gloves in the middle of summer when it's hot as hell outside.So now thanks to you along with all of my Wells Lamont,Mechanix wear 4X material,Cowhide,Buffalo hide,Goatskin, Synthetic leather,Nylon ,Welders gloves,I now have multiple pairs of Nomex gloves the dexterity can't be beat! I've got Mechanix wear 4X material impact resistant gloves on as I type watching the sunset they are much more durable than that synthetic leather ones.I've never seen you wear mechanics wear gloves,give them a try,and I've watched you ever since, not to mention I've always tricked out my machete with paracord and a lighter and a mini flashlight, but you gave me the idea to add a knife,I never carry a hatchet or axe always a machete and use a saw for cutting wood and LOL, my old computer still runs on Windows 7 also but truth be told I stopped using computers about 6 years ago and only use Android tablets,Chromebooks and Phones,so I never used Windows 8 or Windows 10 or now Windows 11, and besides I forgotten my password so I can't even use it anymore! But then again I don't have to edit videos!👍
@Reallybigmonkey12 жыл бұрын
I actually do have two pairs of Mechanix gloves, one multi cam and one olive drab. I haven't worn them much on videos. The Nomex gloves are fantastic in the summer for warding off mosquito bites, poison ivy and sometimes ticks. And yes, very easy to work in. Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching Kyle!

The Tramontina machetes are really popular in Oregon for two reasons, one we have Himalayan blackberries everywhere west of the cascade mountains. But I think the main reason they are easy to find in the Willamette valley is because we grow a lot of hops and it has been the tool of choice for harvesting them. Most of the time the end user would modify the handle to fit them and the blade angle would be ground for different activities. I spent years clearing brush off fences with one.

Another great video, Dave! Always entertaining, educational and informative..but I’ve gotta tell you it’s the little unexpected things you do that make your videos so much fun! Like that laugh you made when you pulled out the tarp from the sheath. Welcome to the "Rrrringg"-Club - finally . Now you know, why people talk about Tramontina machetes as often as about Mora knives. Of course, with those 2mm thin blades they are ment for vines and not for thick dry hardwood, but grinding a convex edge helps a lot against getting stuck. I got my Tramontina around 1958 from my granddad, he worked as a tallyman at that time and picked it up from a ship - took some time to get used to it, but it serves me well up to today. Stay safe and take care

Hey Guys. Another great video. Dave, regarding your sheath...WOW! Your skills are improving. In regards to your zipper going down philosophy, one thing I've discovered is that the bottom of the pocket opens up first. Things can fall out. I discovered that with the downwards closing zippers on my jacket. By zipping it up, nothing can fall out the bottom until it's completely unzipped. You can remove the zipper pull and replace it with a piece of paracord, then you can have a small VELCRO tab to loop through it or even have a snap for it. My sleeping bag has a VELCRO tab up top to keep it from unzipping when moving around inside. Just an idea. The Tasmanian Tiger leg rigs use a combination of webbing and elastic for the leg straps. That way you can secure them firmly to your leg, but the elastic allow for flex. They work great. I wear them when fishing for my pliers/bear spray. I lover your ground clearing trick. That's brilliant! It's good to see you have a pack with a chest strap. Don't you find it a lot more comfortable? Without the chest strap, the shoulder straps dig into your shoulders/arms and restrict the blood flow. I love that pack, your jacket, pants and Nick's shirt. Maybe bring a second camera for the zoom shots, then you can edit them later on. Thanks fellas. Keep up the good work. :)
@Reallybigmonkey12 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it and thanks for the comments! I can see how stuff could fall out of pockets but I'm thinking how could my zipper open upwards? I guess it's possible. Yes, a chest strap really helps. Take care and thanks for watching
@beerhunter2722 жыл бұрын
@@Reallybigmonkey1 Hey Dave. A zipper is so light that gravity alone won't be able to "pull" or "hold" in down. What will cause a zipper to open is when the ingredients (in this case your tarp) is stuffed into the pocket/pouch and you force the zipper closed. It's like blowing air into a balloon. Movement and/or vibration can cause a zipper to open slightly or it can get caught on a branch, stick etc. Once it opens a little, the outward force of the contents will open it further. I've had zippers blow apart from trying to stuff something in and forcing it closed. Anyways, just food for thought. Thanks for the reply. I also wanted to say that I respect you so much for not begging for likes and subscriptions. Too many youtubers are in it for the money, but you are genuinely in it to teach, to learn and to share. So thanks for that and all of your efforts.

I have a Tramontina machete just like that and it is one of my favorite tools. I have cut trees down with it, I process firewood with it, and it is great for pummeling large pieces of wood to split them down to smaller burnable pieces.

The Tramontina machetes are definitely very capable tools. Thanks for watching

Nick is just like my sons. ‘’Dad! You’re still using that?’’ LOL! Love to see you two trying out new / old styles of machetes. The sound is great on the new camera. The machete is such an everyday tool for so many cultures. I could see having that style in addition to the usual ones carried on outings. Love that ‘’zing’’ sound. Thanks for the video guys. Stay safe and keep taking us along!

Great video Dave and Nick. That trick about putting the machete flat on the ground and using a baton goes right into my set of skills. Great! I'm a machete guy, like you, but been using Tramontina for over 25 years even for felling big trees sometimes. I also baton with them with no problem. For removing dead twigs/branches from a tree I use the spine of the machete and they snap right off. The style Nick has is a Bolo indeed and the style you have is a Latin machete. That's the style. You can buy standard sheaths from Ontario and Imacasa that will fit but really like what you did with the sheath. I want to see how big that tarp is and kudos for taking gravity into consideration with the placement of the zipper. You are a thinker like me. I have different models/styles machetes from different makers, thin and thick spine, but my go to is still after all these years the Tramontina Latin machete. I prefer the 10"and 12" blades because they go inside my backpack but still are able to do everything I need to do and I dare to say I can survive everywhere in the world with just one of these. Of course for comfort I will also want my pocket knife/tool (SAK) and a small fixed camp knife, but that's luxury already. So what took you so long to finally find Tramontina. ;) Kudos to Mike Oregon for sending you these.

Thanks, we are glad you liked it all. That ground clearing trick has sure saved me a lot of dings and chips over the years. I guess we stayed away from Tramontina all them years simply because they were so cheap we figured they were lousy. Kudos to Oregon Mike for making us believers! Take care and thanks for watching
@StevanOutdoor2 жыл бұрын
@@Reallybigmonkey1 I can understand. Back in the days when I wanted to test a machete the cheap Tramontina was basically the only one available in my country. This was well over 25 years ago. Now there are a lot more options. And I do have other options now also, different models and different makers but when I go out I still lean towards a Tramontina. It's like the Mora (or Hultafors) of machetes. You don't believe it until you try. I made a video about using a tramontina machete in the kitchen also many years ago. And that beautiful 'zinggg' when you chop with it. I bet people can make music with it. So kudos to Oregon Mike indeed for making you a believer. ;) My preferred one now is the wooden handle 10" blade Latin machete with and Ontario 12" (canvas/nylon) sheath. I could not find that 10" in Europe in online stores but I was lucky and found a guy in Croatia that had a shop pretty close that had some. So he send me two of these and in return I did send a 12" with sheath and I threw in a Hultafors HVK as a surprise. Happy deal and still a friend. Like Mike helped you out this guy helped me out. Enjoy the outdoors and you and your boy stay safe. Now I wait until you show more about that sheath with tarp you made. ;) Cheers, Steve

Nice machetes Dave, never heard of them. Love the ringing sound they make, looks like they are great. I'll have to look into one. Great job on the sheath ! the video and sound quality is great. You got a lot of new goodies! I had to get a new computer about 2 yrs ago. I had Windows 7 also. It got to the point where I couldn't even get updates anymore. You and Nick will have a lot of fun with those machetes. 👍⚔️👍

The handles can be shaped and sanded, so they fit you perfectly, and you can put any finish or oil or whatever you like on them. Also if you feel that the blade is too long, or not a shape you like, then it's a simple job, to change that too... Great bits of kit,, imho...

Great video, fun to see how you discover the Tramontina sound! I love my Tram bolo! With that wider front part it is more forward weighted and it chops about as well as a standard 18 inch, but is easier to carry. But Trams come with just an indication of where to put your own edge, and are pretty rough. I put a convex edge on mine, ran it up to the top of the bolo curve so I have a part I can chop close to the ground with (the edge being a bit steeper) without risking damage to the main edge. Like a swedge. Smoothed out the spine, sanded it smooth with nthe handle and rounded off the handle - took off the varnish and treated it with linseed oil, like you already suggested in the video. Finally I added a lanyard hole. It improved dramatically, I once spent two hours non stop clearing a trail from nasty bramble vines, in the rain, and had no blisters or any pain in my hands (no gloves worn). It chops through an inch of standing hazel or ash with a single blow, with that convex edge. See this pic for the reprofiled tip of my bolo: flic.kr/p/V4gFAy . And this for the handle: flic.kr/p/UGDFEm . Have fun (and see you on BCUSA). :-)

Wow. what perfect timing , I just picked up a tramontina 18 inch . My plan for the handle is to give it a light sanding , add some Wilson tape and a lanyard . . I will keep the sheath it came with for now . 22 bucks and change , you can't go wrong ! Thank you for the video. .

Sounds good to me Frank! A tip from another commenter, instead of drilling a lanyard hole, replace one of the rivets with some tubing and run the lanyard through that

Great tip about clearing brush at ground level to avoid rock dings. I have the 12 inch Tramontina and like it fine. Doubles as a big knife. Looks really good when you blue the blade on a hot summer day with Birchwood Casey. I intend to get the 18 inch and the bolo model too. On my desk top the front speaker on your GoPro sounds fine but using the back speaker creates a lot of distortion but then could be my older model computer too. You and Nick make a great team and really enjoy your videos .

Always good fun watching you both trying out new equipment, especially machetes, knives and tools. I don't really like those bigger type machetes myself, but it was great watching the test. I'm glad I wasn't anywhere near Nick when he was grass cutting 😃. That sheath of yours was just excellent especially carrying a tarp as well. I actually have the marbles sheath and the marbles machete but wasn't impressed to be honest. The sheath I do like though. Hope the gopro works out OK although I think a zoom facility is an advantage. Many thanks again to you both for another great and enjoyable video. 👍👍👍.
