Dave, that is some awesome craftsmanship. My daddy, God rest him, would have absolutely loved your channel. He was a wood craftsman and built furniture as a hobby. He was also a wood carver. He would have loved watching what you are able to build in the woods with a hand saw, a machete, and a knife. He was a camper, hunter, fisherman, etc. He had done it all in multiple states, varied terrain, and in all kinds of weather. But I can promise, you would have impressed him. This cook set-up is great. I love your old cookset. What a treasure.

Ohh. Only 50 minutes. And I mean it. It was nice to see your happy face and I love the way you do your notches, dimples, sawing and cutting your wood constructions. Now I will add this brilliant idea to my toolbox. Who knows what I will need in the future? That cook set was like those russians dolls that fits into eachother. Ha ha. You just pulled out one after another. Very cool! Thank you so much for enriched my evening for 50 lovely minutes. Take care my good friend.

Another great video Dave. I have to say I learn something new from nearly every video of yours I watch. I have great respect for you as a Bushman. You present some of the most innovative approaches to camping, and survival in the woods. But has anyone ever told you you work too hard at having fun? Lol. I like my comfort too. So most everything you do hits a high note with me. I wish I had learned all the stuff I now know fifty years ago. Much was learned from you , BTW. It also brought back memories when you showed the Boy Scout Handbook. I was getting into camping and scouting in the later part of the 1950's and early 60's. That was the very manual I used back then when I became a Boy Scout. I never lost my love of camping and learning Bushcraft skills to make my time in the woods even better. Don't ever lose yours.

Thank you, David. I went to Mitch's video to see what you were talking about. Dave, you actually explained how and why an underground fire occurs in your video. You told us the roots smolder and burn and continue up to and into the tree, as well as setting other roots on fire, etc. Mitch talked about the end result of making a pit fire and only smothering the embers, without ensuring the embers are cold and truly out. His video showed this failure causes an underground fire. The video was surely graphic. Yet, Mitch didn't talk about how the fire spread underground. Thank you for covering that part of it in your video. I appreciate both of you men and your earnest desire to educate people. Thank you for publishing your videos. You are an asset to all of us. May God continue to bless you, honey. Have a wonderful year ahead. Stay safe. Hugs for you, Linda Lee

David. you come up with some rather unique stuff. This would sure lighten a load not carrying irons. Thank you. My folks bought that same set back in 1958 when we lived in Denver and spent most weekends camping in the mountains. We still have it somewhere. I bought the newer style back in the early 70's, and it was still fairly heavy (a lot heavier than the new ones). Stay crazy and keep the videos coming.
@Reallybigmonkey18 жыл бұрын
LOL, man every thing I do is unique I suppose. Oh yes, this is way way less than irons but it works off the same idea. All you need is a saw and and axe or machete plus paracord youre set. I had the opportunity to buy an old cook stove the canister type . I regret not purchasing it at a thrift store. Sure would have loved to learn what year it was and when they started making them. The funniest part was when I was all excited and showing a friend I ran to. As her eyes started to glaze over and the girl got that took like uhhhh boring. I guess I am bit unique from most women. I get excited when my husband brings me gifts like an axe, new knife , cook set and a new bow lol. And my coworkers are watching Netflix series that teach them absolutely nothing. I am watching everything bushcraft, survival and gear reviews. Love your videos. I actually watch you or TOGR, TA outdoors to rest my brain at bedtime. It's very relaxing. Well Buddy, I started in scouting in the mid 60's, and all the lids that we used were the flats. I will write an old scout master friend of mine and put that question to him seeing that he was a scouting lifer. Your mantle set is so assume that one could make a second set for a semi-permanent or even permanent super sturdy shelter! I think with the extra time and notching, it would take some heavy winds and even snow weight well! Thanks for the idea! John

watching your videos (which I look forward to), some may think "that's a LOT of effort/work..." but the reality is, when you spend enough time in the bush, you have tried and mastered so many things, that its fun to spend time trying new things. Often, it is more satisfying to spend more time on a single project than to rush and have too much time to kill. It really comes down to personality. I personally love to stay busy, creative, and active. I dont worry much about burning calories, as I have never gone hungry in a forest, I'm more concerned of getting complacent. I love mental stimulation through physical action. Cheers

Thanks Tony, I'm glad you liked it. From my experiences with this set up, it also actually makes it easy to manage multiple pots and cook a huge amount of food with no problems. Thanks for watching.

Another great vid Dave, thanks. Learnt that you come from Gorgia too. Reason that it intrests me so much is that I have a very good friend and PenPal, same age as me (65), that lives near Dawson Ga. Although we have traded emails and such for a few years now we have never actually talked to each other. Listening to your accent now gives me an idea just how he could sound like! Thanks again Dave and keep up the good work. Chris Bowerbank.

Thanks, I'm glad you liked it Thomas. Man theres a good chance your friend does sound a lot like me. Dawson is only three or four counties away from me. He lives in a beautiful place because Dawson is just south of the Chattahoochee National forest. Thats the most beautiful mountains in Georgia. Take care and Thanks for watching.

glad to see you again! it's always refreshing to watch your videos, they are not the same ol' ones about the same ol' things. I do ask myself " is this guy ever gonna run out of neat ideas to show us" I hope not!! keep up the great videos and tell Nick we miss him!

Always great to be back on here an, I'm glad you liked it Melissa. I try my best to only show weird never seen before stuff. I think Ive got enough different stuff to show for three or four more years! Nick should be back since schools out soon. Take care and Thanks for watching

I enjoy all of your videos and learn something useful every time, but I get the most out of videos like this one, where you build structural pieces and show the joinery involved. I'd like to see how you'd go about building a solid wall shelter for long term use (like weeks or months). Keep up the good work!
@Reallybigmonkey14 жыл бұрын
Great to hear that. If I had property Id build a set up like that

Perfect for my semi permanent shelter. Eassily movable if you just want a fire and can be put in place when you need to cook. Excellent!

Your new nickname might be Braer Rabbit. Nice briar patch. I like your attitude: It was "Knot tied right". If it works, it works. If you can't untie it, you can cut it. Can't believe how much I can learn from one of your short videos. Thank you.

You make some neat stuff out of logs and branches !!! Thanks for getting my Imagination going ....I could super size this Idea and have a big cool A frame type shelter ....or.... make a small pair to use as saw horses or something or a pair with logs across the top for a camp table That is a Nice old set of camp cookware
@Reallybigmonkey18 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! Actually, with two of these, one higher than the other it can be the frame for an incredibly strong shelter. This design holds a ton of weight no matter if its a table shelter or cook rack. Thanks for watching!

Another great video my friend - I could see where the draw knife / machete concept would be real handy for that construction. Back in my boy scout days we just used forked branches over round branches used as legs and "mantel" - thanks for bringing back a memory - still remember taking turns digging the trench for the fire on the troop cookout. Scout master had grates to lay over the trench (expanded aluminum I think)
@Reallybigmonkey18 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. Thats cool it brought back old memories. Ive used the forked stick thing too but that doesnt work too well with carved pot hangers. I used to use leather cordage with my set up. Ive heard of people using small chains. Thanks for watching.

That is a great idea. My thanks for sharing it. I have 10 kids and 28 grandkids so (depending on how many are there) I might be needing one about the same size or much larger but it can be scaled up or down easily enough...... Very well done...thank you again for your time.

Nice to see another video,David, even without Mr. Cameraman Extraordinaire. You are right: "Clear as mud".😁 All that slicing, dicing, sawing, angling...Lol. But then it really DID make sense!! It turned out awesome--very sturdy, versatile and durable-looking. What really struck me though was its beauty. It blends in perfectly with those woods, especially with that old cookset hanging from it. Take care my friend! Stella

Always great to be back on here Stella. Im glad it made sense at the end, I knew it wouldnt in the process. LOL. I hope that Nick the cameraman will be back more this summer. Not much beats the sight of an old timey cook set on a hand made frame. Brings back memories for me. Thanks for watching

Yup cut from the bottom, used a chain saw for years you learn little tricks when sawing, so you dont get binds. It applies to all saws. Thanks for sharing that tip. Alot of good advice bro, well done. Yea man i know exactly what you mean. Do this great video with awesome info and shots and you get a comment about something negative and makes you say wow, really? lol The broad shoulders of a youtubian. lol Since i work with wood, i could see what you was doing before each step was finished. well done Man, thanks for another video dude, always a pleasure.
