Lifelong charity fundraiser Peter was attacked in a shopping centre and left for dead, leaving him with a head injury which he says has left him compulsively ordering online, filling his small one-bedroom flat with clutter. Will Jamie and Steve be able to clear this mountain of shopping in 4 days?

it's not because his brain was damaged after the attack that he got worst, it's the emotional trauma, he was attacked and then left for death, he felt extremely unsafe now he finds comfort in shopping and hording it's sad really such a nice man.

I've read that hoarding will sometimes start after a traumatic event like the man in this video. A formerly clean and neat person will turn into a hoarder after the trauma.

I can already say this but my whole family is hoarders. My sisters room is full of random things she buys online and my parents can’t get rid of anything. My mother just buys and buys and then complains about money problems. My younger sisters never clean up and just pile on things that they buy or get. I feel like the only normal one because I clean up and I get rid of things I don’t need.

Same here. My mother, her friend, my brother and my two best friends all are hoarders too. Everything in our house is cluttered, except my room. I tried to clean the house multiple times in the past, but a week later it's messy again. It's so exhausting. Thankfully I am moving out soon.

My grandma was the same. She ruined home after home and left them once she couldn’t inhabit them anymore. It wasn’t strange to find a flattened dead cat once you found the floor or roaches every time you moved an object on the floor or wall.

I can see this guy can improve and is clearly willing to seek help. The fact he feels shame over his condition (which is terrible) proves he's fully aware it's a problem that needs to be resolved. A good psychiatrist could seriously help him and prevent regression. He's a good guy that didn't deserve what happened to him. I really think Peter is on the road to recovery

We moved to our own house finally, before move I sold two trucks of house hold items, threw away many bags of useless items, I m worried I may again collect things which we may not need, it's a big house, and I must be on guard, not to cling on things which are not needed.

This is such a common thing nowaday's. I see it when people have a loss they cannot fulfill emotionally. They need therapy, support and human connections. Connections of family, friends, social in the community, they need to feel valued and valid. The clutter is a manifestation of the need for that intimate emotional comfort, which actually makes them worse. I believe marketing and a false sense of self worth through monetary materials adds to the de-stabilization. They were wounded and cannot or will not acknowledge that directly. But that is the only way to heal, acknowledge the root of the hurt and find practical and incrimental plan of actions to progress from it. Whenever something impedes your ability to function daily, it is an addiction and it requires that specific approach to stop it.

@@riseevolution If you take away his stuff without his permission, it'll result in 2 things; 1. He will panic and his number one goal will be to restore the damage you've done. He will feel as if you robbed him, which you did. 2. He will not understand why it had to happen, because he didn't go through a phase in which he realized that. Meaning he'll do it again, as described above. If he was the one witnessing the effort, helping clean, understanding the issue, there's a big chance he'll understand better and keep control of his life. Number one rule on dealing-with-hoarders-websites is a very clear; DO NOT CLEAN for the hoarder and DO NOT THROW THINGS AWAY for the hoarder. You can help, support, but there needs to be realization and that won't happen if you force a cleanout. Read it yourself.
