Proud owner of six waistcoats myself. I wear a uniform at work, but on the odd occasion where I'm there but don't have to be in uniform, I'm almost always wearing a vest and have always gotten compliments on my outfit. I started wearing vests occasionally recently for, among other reasons, their ability to make you looks a bit slimmer (of course, this depends on the color and style of the vest). They are also great at eliminating the muffin look when your shirt slowly becomes untucked. I have gotten nothing but compliments since I started wearing them, from young and older people. I think an increasing number of people realize that looking informal all the time takes away the magic and, in my experience, people generally respond positively when you look more put-together. Vests also instantly increase the variation in your available outfits.

I’ll be honest; I wear a waistcoat to hide some of my gut in my shirt. A waistcoat allows me to still wear my dress shirts without the hint that the buttons of the shirt are struggling to hold on 😂. Sizing up would create too much room in the arms/shoulders. Once I lose the weight, the waistcoat can be adjusted in the back to bring it in to fit my slimmer waist. Waistcoats can style you through different sizes 👍🏼.

I feel like the vest (or maybe they count as a Gilet) is still quite popular in Australia, as sometimes a jacket/sloppy joe/jersey is far too hot to wear, but a vest will do nicely between 15°-20°. I would notice the older blokes at the pistol range often wore vests with suspenders, because when they had their holsters on, they naturally lost their right pant pocket, making up for it with the pockets on their vests.

I love a waistcoat myself. In fact I'm in the middle of making my own custom one! The Great War changed a couple of things: pocket watches. Very popular and easy to store in a waistcoat. Wrist watches were invented during that war, so you would need one less pocket with a watch on your wrist. Losing the waistcoat would not be anyless convenient/useful now that the watch pocket is not required. I did learn from this video that the function is to cover waist-join with the shirt. In England the term 'vest' more usually refers to a t-shirt type garment worn under the shirt.

The decline of formal dressing among men in the US is a fascinating topic. I believe the 1990s marked the beginning of the casual dress revolution, which originated in the workplace and eventually became an everyday norm. As a professional image consultant, I've heard various reasons from my clients for this shift. Some fear being perceived as trying too hard or dressing like their fathers. Others simply want to fit in with the prevailing casual culture. However, I've also witnessed another obstacle that men face: discouragement from dressing up by women. Some women may view a well-dressed man as a threat or a competitor for attention. I've seen this firsthand in my profession, where men are often discouraged by their partners from dressing up. Personally, I think the shift towards casual dressing has also led to a loss of personal experience and connection. When we dress up, we feel more confident, put-together, and respectful of ourselves and others. It's an experience that can elevate our mood, attitude, and interactions. As men, it's essential to dress for our body types and age. As we get older, our ability to get away with certain fashion choices diminishes. What may be appropriate for a younger man, such as wearing jogging pants and a t-shirt, may not be suitable for an older man. As we age, our dress needs to be more established, and we need to be more put-together. With age should come wisdom, and wisdom is the application of knowledge. As we gain knowledge and experience, we should start to exhibit a greater understanding of what looks best on us and how to present ourselves in a respectful and polished manner. It's also important to note that dressing well should not be limited to formal events. Wearing a sport coat or blazer can be a great way to elevate your everyday look and make a positive impression. By incorporating these pieces into your wardrobe, you'll not only look more polished but also feel more confident and put-together. In fact, as we get older and more established in our lives, our activities and dress should mirror each other. If you're attending a networking event, a job interview, or a social gathering, your dress should reflect the occasion and your level of professionalism. As a professional image consultant, I've worked with numerous men who come to me in crisis mode, seeking guidance on what to wear for formal events, job interviews, or even dates. Often, these men have received less-than-ideal advice from their significant others, which can be damaging to their confidence and self-perception. I've encountered situations where men are discouraged from dressing up by their partners, who may feel threatened or overshadowed by their partner's polished appearance. I've heard comments like, 'Why does he need to wear a suit? Why can't he just wear jeans and a t-shirt?' or 'You're going to make him look more put-together than me.' These attitudes not only undermine a man's confidence but also perpetuate the notion that men should not strive to present themselves in a respectful and polished manner. As a result, I often find myself reeducating men on the importance of dressing well and the value it brings to their personal and professional lives. It's not about competing with others or seeking attention; it's about presenting oneself with respect, confidence, and sophistication. Whether it's a wedding, a formal event, or a job interview, dressing well is an essential part of making a good impression and showcasing one's personality. As I always tell my clients, dressing well is not just about the clothes; it's about the confidence, respect, and attitude that comes with it. It's time for men to reclaim their sense of style and sophistication, and I'm committed to helping them do so.

I've worn a vest as part of my Navy formal Mess uniform and have been keen on incorporating vests into my civilian work wear (maybe even with a pocket watch). Being in that part of Australia where summer temps regularly hits over 100F but winter gets down to the low 20s F makes for somewhat of a challenge. Call me odd, but I like the tweed look for suits/vests and the vests worn in the Lord of the Rings series also hold an appeal to my country origins.

I do like it aesthetically, but as for keeping warm, I always found it impractical: the parts that easiest get cold are the arms, particularly the hands and the fingers. Those are the very parts it DOESN'T protect. Any clothing that sufficiently protects your arms will surely keep your torso warm as well, so a vest seems unnecessary. It's only practical if you've given up on protecting the whole body, you just want to ensure that the vital parts are kept warm enough... or if you need your arms more mobile for some reason.

A vest definitely bumps up the look of a suit. Makes the whole thing seem so much more complete. And, it definitely allows for removal of the coat while maintaining a level of formality. Plus, im overweight, but i have relatively broad shoulders. The vest and shirt stays prevent my shirts from bellowing out and keep me looking a lot more.... controlled 😅
