You missed a couple of things, starting with the bandanna. While you mentioned dust, a big function was also to serve as a mask, especially when riding drag, to protect them from the dust the cattle kicked up. (Riding drag was when you were at the tail end of the herd). Also, while denim was around, it was not always popular with the drovers as miners tended to wear it. Western wear is a big piece of my style, but then while I haven’t worked with livestock for years, I am a Cowboy, with the scars to prove it.

@@matthewmorrisdon5491 I used to have an old hand-me-down overcoat that was great in rain. It greatly resembled an old west style duster except for the split in the back for riding a horse. and without the flaps over the shoulders you see on so many these days. It also had a detachable inner liner made with wool. I often think about getting another overcoat that is hopefully something like that one, but none of the stores around here have them and I only make it to the city about once a year.

As a motorcycle rider I fully understand the functional clothing. Every time I went for a ride something would hit me somewhere. Maybe a Stone, a Bee or even a bird. Each time I would add some piece of protection. It began with boots, then gloves, bandana... jeans and leather jackets and it's pretty much a cowboy attire.

Hawaii has a interesting history of the cowboys (Paniolo). Hawaii brought in vaqueros from Mexico, before California was a state. The King in Hawaii was gifted some cattle and a restriction was put on hunting them, they multiplied and got out of control. Hawaii also had at one time the biggest cattle ranch in the world, (Parker Ranch). In its heyday, Parker ranch was almost 500,000 acres. Today it’s only130,000 acre s.

South Texas “rednexican” here… nice video, love the history lesson. I’m surprised he didn’t go into more detail on the more modern looks. Like HEAVY starched jeans with a crease, crisp starched shirts (pearlsnap), soft shell weather proof jackets and vests for the colder days etc. Some ol boys even pull off a damn trucker hat and make it work. Just look at Cody Johnson or George Strait when their on stage, or the guys from Yellowstone, Costner in particular since he’s typically dressed nice and not in work clothes. Also, wrangler is great but around here it’s typically used for work and cinch and ariat are the dress jeans. Could just be my little bubble but I’ve been all over Texas, NM, OK & LA for work and we all are kinda similar. You’d be surprised what passes for formal around here. As a cowboy, it's funny, but informative to watch this good video. The only 'shoes' I have are cowboy boots. And I wear a cowboy hat just dang near every day; some days, I might wear a ball cap, but they feel weird. I prefer my hats, and I'm just used to them. On bandannas, a good silk one is invaluable. In the cold, it's almost like wearing another jacket, as far as the warmth, when you wear it as a wind block around your neck. They make a good dust mask and silk is very absorbent, so even in sweaty times, it can get sweat out of yer eyes, or you can wet it and wear it loose for a cooling effect.

Great video! I’m a Brit and my kids say I should’ve been a cowboy. I’ve loved the western style since I was a teen in the 60s. I started wearing Wrangler denim shirts, before the 70s fashion for the western look. I’ve been wearing cowboy boots since that period, too, and now own about 13 pairs of varying styles. One problem is that, over here in England, there are a few people who like to dress like they’ve stepped off a stage coach in a John Wayne movie. Jeans tucked inside their boots; wide brimmed cowboy hat; suede jacket with flowing fringes, bandana, etc. Other people view them as a bit strange and they may be that! So I’ve spent 50 years perfecting my look, so I have a distinct western style, but without being so OTT that I stick out like a sore thumb. I think I’ve achieved the look I want and still get taken seriously by others. I also like to think that if I visited TX or other parts of today’s west, I’d blend in and not be recognised as a Brit!

A point (hehe) about the design of the pointed and round toes of the boots: these were preferred by cowboys to make it easier to slip your feet into the stirrups. A square toe can bump the stirrup out of alignment, and cost you a moment getting yourself secured in your seat.
@lalli8152
@lalli8152 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah i think the heel also was designed to sit securely in stirrups. Funnily my favorite boot since im from finland is sort of iconic boot where the toe part has sort of lip curved upwards. To my understanding why many nordic boots are like that its designed to go in to traditional skiis. In the traditional ones the strap is just simple loop, and you just push the boot in to the loop, and the curve in toe helps the loop from slipping out from front. I just love the look of that curved toe personally, and i enjoy outdoors. The boots are modern day seen as woodsmen boots even though we usually dont use the old style skis so it doesnt serve purpose anymore

It’s a small town way of dressing up your jeans. That crisp, clean, and long lasting press down jeans is a nice touch for church, parties, etc. 3) belts my friends. Some people love their belts and their buckles and the tools they carry on them. Personally, I carry a Leatherman in a leather pouch. Lots of guys will have a slip joint knife on their belt. 4) everything has a function. It’s super easy to spot someone who’s playing dress up and another who knows what’s up. Lots of guys I went to school with came to Texas and bought gaudy boots, stereotypical brown hats, and ended up looking like Woody from Toy Story.

Nice video. I’ve incorporated western style into my wardrobe for years. Part of what I like about it is it’s functionality and the fact it never really goes out of style. It’s popularity ebbs and flows but it’s always around. Add to that that’s it’s an iconic American style and I’m all set.

I’m a Georgia cowboy. My family has been in Harris County, Ga since 1801. The reason for round toe boots was due to movie cowboys couldn’t get there feet into the stirrups with square toe boots. I’ve always worn square toe boots. Also being a cowboy is not style or wardrobe, it’s a way of life. I thoroughly enjoyed your video! It had a lot of great history and very informative to those who know very little about cowboys! Thank you for making this video! Hats off to you sir!

Actually it was a cavalry soldier back in the day who became a wrangler and went to a boot maker with a request of having boots made that were easier and quicker to get in the stirrup. That boot maker was Tony LLama or Luchese, don't quite recall.

Georgia and the South simply copied their Texas cousins. Cowboys NEVER existed in the south, other than Spanish Florida. So it's funny when I see Southerners in cowboy hats. Only until modern equipment made it easy to clear vast amounts of forests in the 20th century were cowboys introduced in the South. But definitely not in the 19th century

I am a 62 two year old Texan. I have worn boots and jeans my entire life. When in the sun a cowboy hat. Preferably straw in the summer, felt in the winter. There are nuances to pull of a western look, stack jeans is one. Required if you ride a horse, or a motorcycle. Many others. All kinds of ways to incorporate the look in to your wardrobe.

I grew up in South Dakota and the further west you went from Aberdeen the classic cowboy could and still be found. I worked on my sister's husband's cattle ranch of 300 head. Great memories for me, I still wear my blue jeans and Justin boots. The ball cap is very popular too but a nice cowboy hat is tough to beat. I really enjoyed this very well done.

I just bought an American Hat Co Straw cowboy hat about 2 months ago. Whenever I'm asked why, I just shrug and say "I just like the hat" 🤷🏻‍♂️ and that's pretty much that. But most of the time it's, "hey man, I like that hat!". So yeah, if you want a cowboy hat and you know you'll wear it all the time, then buy a good one, you won't regret it.

Hey Captain, I grew up in the San Francisco bay area when it was mostly farmland. The Cow Palace in Daly City was where they held rodeos back in the 50s and 60s. Today the California Rodeo is in Salinas near my town of Gilroy. Although I've lived in other parts of the country for the military (including Texas) I've always owned western boots and some western shirts along with my regular clothes. Even when I was stationed in DC (and lived near Quantico) I would wear my dress Lucchese boots with a suit when we went to the Kennedy Center. Semper Fi Marine and Hook m Horns

Let me know if you need to know anything about the history regarding this subject, I'm a historian and im sure I could help you so that you don't miss some information. Reason being, I notice that you left out things like the Rancheros which were mostly Tejano and the cultural influence of the modern cowboy, which came from Tejano ranching skills combined with German/czech (hailing from the hill country) and anglo-american culture (hailing from the northeast). also you forgot about buckskins! very important influence cowboy bandanas were called wild rags

I was super into cowgirl outfits when I was a kid... didn't grow up with animals and my family was midwest white collar. These days, I live in the south, own and train my horse, and handle all kinds of horses off an on. Now cowboy boots and jeans aren't a fashion thing - they are just necessary. Thinking I might need a weatherproofed leather cowboy hat for working in the rain. Now if I could just figure out how to make horses and animals my day job rather than my evening and weekend thing, that would be great lol

The cowboy style is also a great one because it will help you develop your style. I started high school looking like a cowboy and finished it looking more like a lumberjack/woodsman/vintage winchester poster. I still keep a lot of the artifacts I started with but my style has leveled up the my own unique bit. As for my hat I started with the classic tractor supply wool felt and now I run a leather aussie cap as it better suits against rain and snow and living in maine keeping the sun off my face is only a concern in the middle of the summer. It's been a defining journey

Hello everyone from Turkey. I have a huge interest being a cowboy since my childhood. Well I have never lived in a ranch and don't have enough experience in country life but only reason is i never had the chance. I own an iron horse bike for long time but Im dying for riding horse and enjoy country life. For years I wear Wrangler jeans and other wrangler stuff and last month I found a second hand cowboy hat from a guy who visited Usa once. The hat is an original Stetson made of straw. I only keep it on the wall as decor (i saw that putting it on the bed brings bad luck lol) and only if I go any village on mountains I wear it. Bcs the cowboy hats re not worn in this geography sadly, people re gonna see me as a weirdo. About boots they re crazily expensive in here I may have to spend my full salary to get real ones so I have my Harley boots for that lol. Lately I watch Yellowstone its great tv serie. Thanks for the video thanks for the reading take care. Greetings from Turkey.

I agree with all of these, my choice of hat is actually a flat brim wool felt hat. My father given it to me and I loved it but after seeing Lee Van Cleef in ‘For a dollars more’ and ‘the good the bad and the ugly’ I knew then that I needed to reshape the hat. Ever since people have noticed and treated me differently especially when I stand straight.

I'm not a "true" cowboy, but I'm from the deserts out West anyway. We did have genuine Western-style towns and such out there, and it stuck with me. I live up North now, but my style choice has been affected pretty well. I wear cowboy boots and bootcut jeans all the time. Flannel or denim shirts. If I wanna dress up a little, I wear snap shirts. I love my denim jackets, many of which I buy second versions of so I can chop the sleeves off and make a vest out of it. I top it all off with my leather outback hats. Basically, think John Marston, and you're not far off. I get compliments literally all the time, both from men and women. People dig the ensemble. Every now and again someone will give me a hard time over it but I don't care. Most people I meet think it's cool as Hell. The trick is to not make it a costume. Look natural in it, and make it so that if you remove or change anything it still works. Take the hat off and put on some sunglasses. Swap the nice shirt for a T-shirt. Maybe today you're more rock n' roll than you are cowboy. Rock a Hawaiian shirt over a T-shirt with it in the heat and it works super well too. It's way more versatile than you think.
