Gavin de Becker, the nation’s leading expert on de-escalation and public figure protection, unpacks the importance of intuition, the difference between true fear and unwarranted fear, and the epidemic of sudden, unexpected deaths among seemingly healthy people beginning in 2021.

How refreshing. Two or three people having a civil, intellectual conversation, without raising their voices, not talking over one another, injecting humor from time to time. Mike, your ability, and willingness, to engage, ask a question, then listen, is a dying art. Thanks

I work on a laptop all day and I never had anything delivered during lockdowns and I quickly stopped wearing the face diaper and I dang sure didn't get the pokey poke. Caution with calling it "face diaper" and pokey poke. You may have missed the part where they talked about insults shutting down discussion, and you want your peers to listen.

Instinct and Common Sense! Another thing that came to mind with what is lacking these days: Self-control AND self-discipline. Examples: You come to a full stop at a stop sign because you see a cop - that's self-control. You come to a full stop at a stop sign because it's safer to make sure no kids on bikes, etc. That's self-discipline. Great interview!

Or, act appropriate to the situation. If there are people, then fully stop. If nobody is around, then don't. That is called the wisdom and discretion that befits free people in a free country.

@@nunnayabiz7911You've missed the point, and demonstrated the lack of discipline. The arrogance and ignorance it takes to miss the point and to think the important bit is the cop is a product of upbringing and state of social/moral decay. Post shame society is you doing the act and openly sharing it with others. Heading in the right direction of back to shame would be you responding in any self aware way to this comment. Ultimately we need to return to personal guilt, failing yourself, your moral code and or God etc.

I dig the picture frames in the background…of this podcast. I raised a son who’s turning 21 soon, too soon. But he is a young man looking for work. School later, I think. I was a way better student getting back into college in my late 20’s…and 30’s. Rather than just dreaming of a career and taking classes to be an Architect. But, I didn’t attend a school that mastered in architecture. So I changed majors to teach. One I noticed the power of Admin over the teachers, and 2 the teachers had to buy all supplies for the year’s curriculum, I didn’t want to be a teacher. Grading papers until 11 pm at home. So I took another job with a picture-frame maker… Covid lockdowns, shop closes, and I’m unemployed. So I started making my own picture-frames. It’s slow going, but I now make things. I love it. I sell them, online. My son gets bored of sanding. There’s a lot of sanding. But he knows, deep down, if he decides to help me make frames, then that will be the thing he ends up doing… He’s not sure if that’s the deck of cards he’s carrying, if that makes sense. Jeez, I’ll write a letter next time 🙏🤣🙌 All that said, I’ll keep my patience with him, and support him in ways that I’m able to.

In my long experience, *always trust your intuition and your fear*. If it's not telling you to do something completely ridiculous, what have you got to lose? If you walk into a store and your instinct tells you to get out of there and you go to another store, what have you lost? Nothing. It was my mom who taught me to listen to mine. Rarely, as in I can count on one hand, is it ever wrong. I read The Gift Of Fear 25 years ago when it first came out, it was fantastic, and a wonderful confirmation for me. Great guest and great show as always. Thank you so much Mike🌝.

On one of the first points about resolving issues yourself without government intervention... One night I stayed the night at my friends new apartment. He was broke so he was living in the "hood". He was proud of his little abode & I was very happy for him that he had a place of his own. Anyways, I was woken up to blaring rap music at 8am that morning. I was really hungover from the night before so I decided to go downstairs & knock on their door. A couple of guys answered the door & looked at me funny that a 21 year old white girl was knocking on their door. I just kindly told them that I also enjoy loud rap music, but could you please hold off until like 11 or so? I could really use some sleep this morning. They actually obliged & I appreciated it. Its true that just asking your neighbors nicely can get you a lot farther than calling the police.

Good advice on traveling safely on a commercial airplane. Always locate the nearest exit, count the rows, and pre-plan your exit. I didn't hear anything about proper clothing and footwear. Plan for an emergency when getting dressed for travel. No flip flops, slip on's, shorts etc. I see that every day. Finally, as a professional, I certainly do have every passengers safety as my number one priority whenever I'm at the controls. Every pilot I know or fly with has the same priority.

I loved the quote at 1:01 so much, that I transcribed it. Sharing here for anyone else who, like me, wants to remember it precisely: “If we are not able to ask skeptical questions or to interrogate those who tell us that something is true, to be skeptical of those in authority, then we’re up for grabs for the next charlatan, political or religious, who comes along. It wasn’t enough, Jefferson said, to enshrine some rights in the Constitution or a Bill of Rights; the people had to be educated and they had to practice their skepticism; otherwise, we don’t run the government, the government runs us.”

“How did this country function with the lockdowns? Well, somebody brought you food and the laptop class isn’t thinking about who farmed it, who trucked it, who got it there. A friend of mine said not only does the laptop class not care about people who do work, but they think work is a policy failure.” ~Gavin de Becker Boy, did that resonate with me and offered some new insight into how current decision makers ae thinking. I cannot even begin to tell the stories of what my older sister's did to me on the ranch... I still have several scars on my body from the torture they inflicted. (I am 65 now.) We laugh every Holiday we have the chance to spend together about all of the wounds we inflicted on each other. There was no such thing as personnel space or any type shit. If I went in my sisters room and took something, I was gonna pay the price! My favorite is, I was breaking a horse maned Satin.... He bucked for about a minute, then settled down to a slow trot, my sister Kathe decide that was Not Enough... Came out of the grain room waving a grain sack. The rest is history, I was having a good time on this colt, & he just simply erupted into a class A bareback horse! I got hung up, & he drug me around a 2 acre pen twice, hanging under his belly. Have so many scars on my back from that. We still laugh, thought the pain is still there. One day........

Up until my recent retirement I have been involved in telecommunications for over 40 years. early on I was completely enthralled with the idea of a world wide high speed network, the ability to produce useful content, teaching content, specialized programming, (with some exceptions) has now devolved into this equivalent of a town meeting with 140 people talking and no one listening. Add to that, the hideous manipulation of the masses by a few people that learned the methodology early on. Then there’s the rules that prevent the dissemination of sound medical advice, whether it’s a good or bad drug, or a good or bad food. No one is to be trusted and don’t you dare give medical advice Les tried or you be sued or tarred and feathered! And don’t get met started on the organizations that have the word “news” in their names when the last time they actually reported news was 1979. I hope the smart and sane people win. Thanks Mike and Gavin for a great video. Mike Rowe for president!

Yeah, I worked in the news business years ago, right out of college, and can certify that almost nothing going on under the banner of MSM has anything to do with journalism. Rather, it's anti-journalism. It's state captured propaganda. We could have that noble ideal of the internet, but it will take radical decentralizing of ownership and control of the infrastructure and major platforms. Just think of an internet where we all own a piece of everything ( as we should, since they're all making money off either billing us for service or selling our data) from ISP up, and our default portal of entry isn't run by Big Tech but a local or micro local site. We also have to take back our broadcast spectrum btw... while everyone worries about what happens with the internet, basically a couple of corporations have bought the entire terrestrial radio industry -- the entire am/fm dial nationwide. Call-in talk radio was the internet before the internet.

Pont here Gavin. Some of the aircraft windows won't "easily" fit through the space to allow them to be thrown outside. Also, newer generation aircraft, depending upon manufacturer and model are hinged to open outside once cabin pressure is neutral. The PAX (passenger) should read the instruction card in the seat back in front of them that reveals all...but seldom do. I believe the accident you're discussing was Air Florida on the 14th St. bridge.

I think the suggestion that passengers be asked to participate in the defense of the plane in the event of an attack is one of the best ideas I've ever heard. People will do almost anything they are asked to do, but are also very unlikely to volunteer to put themselves in harms way. If there is a clearly articulated expectation that people are supposed to help each other, many people (not all, of course) will be much more likely to intervene. People hate to go against the expectations of the group.

And plexiglass barriers. Warm germ laden breath rises, floats over the barrier and as it cools it descends on the party on the other side.

Oh, wow! I love that you've written specifically for victims of domestic violence. That is awesome and a huge need in our world. I've known far too many women who were victims, unfortunately, and I always wished I could help.

Do you ever wonder why she picked the guy who is violent? Women need to start making way better choices….and then there’s the kids..

@@robinmiller5256 Absolutely! Not in a blame the victim kind of way, but some of the women I knew would get away only to go back, and that really made me wonder. “You made your children what they are…. These children that come at you with knives, they are your children." --Charles Manson On Father's Day, I salute the fathers out there who keep their daughters safe and their sons kind, both at home and far, far beyond. Yes, these women are certainly emotionally and psychologically abused to get them to that point, but raising strong daughters and loving sons is the prevention that will save their lives on both sides. I suspect that both the girls growing up that way would be more likely to become victims while the boys growing up with domestic abuse would be more likely to become the perpetrators. So kudos to Gavin de Becker for not only climbing out of that hole but for reaching back in to get others out. Impressive, indeed!

Both his book and the two written by Lt. Colonel Grossman mentioned are excellent. Especially On Combat I would highly recommend it.

Honor means nothing to the younger generations and its been getting worse for decades. High school teachers have been quitting because of it. Churches are silent about it. And college seems to be promoting it. Now, colleges are closing down. Churches are almost abandoned by the youth. And, like I said, teachers are quitting their jobs. Nurses are quitting in record numbers. Markets are in panic due to the fear that consumers are not buying. But none of these things made America great. It was working together that made America great. It was respect between people that made America great. And it was morals that gave our nation the respect and working together that made it possible for America to be great.
