Wonderful story. Brings back some memories and stories that my boyfriend at the time told me as a Marine serving in Viet Nam. I was a good listener and we both did our parts to allow him to shake off some horrific things. Thank you for your story, it meant a lot to me.

Mike, not sure you would see comment here but here goes...Thank you.. bit too late to learn of you but that is how it is. I was a nurse for 39 yrs working the crazy hours and exposed to chemicals and germs determined to make things better one life at a time. Yet the passion was writing, the desire to act or do stand up though none of these are what a "good nurse" does so the notebooks and scraps of thought accumulated. Turning 58 I decided WTH, my adult son was not toeing the mark why should I? Now joyfully writing, learning storytelling, doing photography and fiber art and white dove releases I have absolutely no goal to achieve and that is how I found your videos. I never saw your tv show being imprisoned as a nurse when I wasn't caring for goats, children or hurricane evacuations. Still I can delight in the way your life came together like fabric felted under expert hands on a cool April morning, because it is always morning somewhere. Morning is the most hopeful, forgiving time of day unlike the regretful deadline of gloaming

Happy late All Hallow's Eve...just watched this video. It's amazing how things have changed in animation since the original Disney pics, now famous celebrities vie for voice overs. Some, like Ellen's Dory, are driven by fan requests. I am glad that regular people like you & I can still make a difference with our voices. Great story, Mike. I hope your scholarship program continues to live long & prosper!

Support Mike Rowe Works. It's a shame there isn't more emphasis in our education system to gear kids toward the skilled trades and Mike does more than his share to spread the word. Mike Rowe's a mensch, which the world needs more of.

Yes, I am a 61 year old man and tears are running down my face.......I hated Bambi in my parent life....back before there were CD players in cars, we had a little tv with a VCR tape player. We set it up to watch while driving on the road with our kids....We needed to it because we had 17 hr drives to Colorado from TN....my daughters favorite movie was bambi....its a horrible movie to try and stay awake to while you are driving in the middle of the night or even day. Yes I would drive straight through....I am like can not you watch Cars again, I love the Speed guy....at least it was upbeat....But its stories like this that brings back the memories of the family cross country trips we took years and years ago. I figured I earned my tears. but not even close to the ones he aerned when he watched the movie

I love that your video's are sort of a low quality or maybe just off the cuff... I was just thinking when I watched your last video and then started to watch this one that I bet someone will complain about the quality. I think too many people worry about quality video's on KZbin. Well the guy that commented before me was asking about that very thing.. As long as I can see and hear you I am good.

"The Way I Heard It with Mike Rowe - Donnie's Secret" -- I watched this episode today, 27 JAN 2017. Excellent work, as always. I enjoy your podcasts, every single one. You paid great tribute to one Marine and to the Corps. I did, however, notice two flaws in this narrative. The first error was the reference to a Marine as a "soldier." No Marine is ever called a soldier. He/she is a POG or a Grunt. Simple. I believe that there are a few more "titles," but for the life of me, I cannot recall them now. I'll have to ask my son, the Marine. The other son, U S Army, and my the daughter, USAF would help me out too. Back to the other issue. In the intro, you mentioned your "crucible" of inconveniences. I think that you should accompany a unit of Marines during their crucible, filming it along the whole route. If you have already done this during your career and televised it, I am sincerely sorry that I have missed it. Apologies and please tell where to find it. The ball's in your court, and thanks again for your all-American show. It's a doozie.

Sharon Voiland I like your answer. Every Marine is first trained as an 0311 (basic rifleman or grunt). Of course you start marine training as a recruit , once trained you earn the title Marine. Enemies of Marines call them...Hell hounds, devil dogs, leather necks, jar heads, shock troops, yellow legs, America’s 911, or just oh shit run! This answer was provided by Cpl. William (TommyGuns) Walker Jr. I thought it was the best I could find.

I have followed you for a while now, and I love your stories. You obviously have spent countless hours in a sound studio... I just don't understand why you would shoot your videos with a potato? The video quality is worse than awful... Pick up a modern point and shoot like a Canon G7X Mk II and the video will be at least somewhere close to the quality of your voice. Keep up the good work!

I believe he does it live on Facebook and then copies the video over here. The "live" part would be the potato effect. He could very well be using a high end camera but the live encoding would still kill it.
