I used to work for Intellution, Inc. in the late 90's in the driver development group. I wrote the OPC Client driver and added OPC functionality to many other drivers as well as the driver toolkit. I also wrote the Modbus 7.x driver (MB1) and Allen Bradley RSLinx 7.x driver. Basically if you are able to get data from an OPC server into iFIX, I wrote it.

Very concise and complete explanation and history of SCADA Systems. It' helps a lot for understanding of SCADA to get a full overview of the its evolution for the Engineers who didn't see it's beginnings. I myself learned a little of SCADA systems at university, but as I started working in the early 2000's, I did it on DCS. The architecture I learned to design was a central field controller conected to the LAN with multiple digital/relay I/Os (and in some cases extension I/O boards) wired to sensors and actuators on the field. A server was connected to it through the LAN and sessions could be started from anywhere with access to the network. From that point a lot of customizations were possible through networking, reporting with SQL and programming additional functions with asp-scripts.

Thank you for this informative video. However what are the prerequisite to learning SCADA?
@scottsommer64805 жыл бұрын
There are really no absolute prerequisites, but it would help to understand: 1) 4-20ma loops, 24 VDC switches,. and basic circuitry, 2) PC software and networking, 3) some general understanding of the process you are trying to control, 4) simple concepts of programming of controllers or PLC's, and 5) some technical savvy and curiosity. RealPars courses at Realpars.com can certainly help with items 1, 2, and 4. Having hands-on acccess to a SCADA system and exploring its features, hardware, software and interconnections would be a great way to begin to understand these systems.

* also, use a person that understands systems when applying scada and remember to use " dumb" switches in combination with scada . No one wants an software adjustable safety function wich by accident can be tampered with so automation is good, but to be used with system knowledge. Systems are still sometimes complex

I am confused, what I know SCADA is mostly for monitoring and mostly used for pilpelines and power lines, when it comes to plants its called a DCS. Please clarify with thanks.
@realparsАй бұрын
Hello, @alwledfouzi. Thank you for your question. I hope this will help you with your learning. DCS systems often control discrete manufacturing processes, such as food processing, chemical production, and pharmaceuticals. SCADA systems are often used for monitoring and controlling large-scale processes, such as power generation, water treatment plants, and oil and gas pipelines. I used to manually operate sewage pumps onboard a US Navy carrier. It seems like SCADA could easily be implemented for this purpose too, no?
@realpars4 жыл бұрын
Yes, SCADA can be used in small installations or large installations to visualize and control most any process. Maritime systems I have worked on have been as small as a dozen I/O or as large as several hundred. The hardware and software in a SCADA system is easily scaled to any size system or process, from a single well-head to a complex tanks farm and loading facility.

1:35 "As you know RTUs and PLCs are microprocessors" is TOTALY wrong. They have "microcontrollers" (read carefuly) embeded inside, but they are not the "microprocessors" (read carefuly)... And the embedded "microcontrollers" have a "microprocessors" embedded inside. So it is like stacking. 1st "microprocessor", 2nd "microcontroller" and then 3rd "controllers" like PLCs RTUs.
@realpars5 жыл бұрын
The intent was to show that RTUs and PLCs are microprocessor-based. Finer distinctions are demonstrated in our more detailed series on RTUs, PLCs, and SCADA. Our training typically is detailed, but still high level, without getting to the arrangement of board-level components.

Is it mandatory to study firstly PLC programming to start SCADA systems?
@realpars4 жыл бұрын
No, it is not mandatory. You will develop an understanding as you go about the PLC memory layout, since the tags in the HMI will likely need to be pointed to memory areas in the PLC to provide equipment status, setpoints, receive commands, etc. You can develop HMI programs that do not require an understanding of any PLC programming concepts beyond the table tables. In most cases, a controls engineer can provide you with the PLC addresses that correspond to the various HMI tags, so learning the data table structure will come naturally as you work with those addresses.

The SCADA system offers an automatic real-time controll to softly shut down industrial equipment during outages when installed UPS systems are running out of battery?
@realpars4 жыл бұрын
Not that I am aware of. What I normally dp is set up an input from the UPS to the PLC (hardwired input) so that I know when the system has switched to UPS. I know the UPS will last 15-20 minutes,. so after 10 minutes, I start the orderly shutdown. Many of the latest UPS systems have much better interfaces that should be able to communicate UPS status to the SCADA system via OPC or other interface.
