=============================
The SCADA acronym stands for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition.
A SCADA system is a collection of both software and hardware components that allow supervision and control of plants, both locally and remotely.
The structural design of a standard SCADA system starts with Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) and/or Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs).
As you know, RTUs and PLCs are microprocessors that communicate and interact with field devices such as valves, pumps, and HMI’s.
That communication data is routed from the processors to the SCADA computers, where the software interprets and displays the data allowing for operators to analyze and react to system events.
Before SCADA, plant personnel had to monitor and control industrial processes via selector switches, push buttons, and dials for analog signals.
This meant that plants had to maintain personnel on site, during production, in order to control the processes.
As manufacturing grew and sites became more remote in nature, relays and timers were used to assist in the supervision and control of processes.
With these devices employed, fewer plant personnel were required to be on site in order to oversee and control operations.
While relays and timers did provide some level of automation, the panels required for these devices took up valuable real estate, troubleshooting was a nightmare, and reconfiguring was difficult at best.
These issues, in conjunction with the need to grow even larger industrial plants, helped to facilitate the birth of automation.
Controlling industrial plants via processors became a reality in the 1950s. Gas and oil, utilities, and manufacturing were major users of these new technologies and supervisory control.
Another decade later the term SCADA was used to describe systems with PLC’s and microprocessors that were being used for the monitoring and control of automated processes on an even greater scale than ever before. SCADA, back then, was anything but practical.
In the next couple of decades, the ’80s and 90s, with computer systems getting smaller, the advent of Local Area Networking (LAN), and HMI software, SCADA systems were able to connect to related systems.
Later in the ’90s and 2000s, SCADA began to implement open system architectures with communication protocols that were not vendor specific.
As you can imagine, this opened up SCADA’s ability to connect with varying vendors. This newer, more improved SCADA was then called a networked SCADA system.
Current day SCADA systems have adapted to the changing technologies and have a great advantage over the older SCADA systems.
With the adoption of modern IT standards such as SQL and web-based applications, today’s SCADA allows for real-time plant information to be accessed from anywhere around the world.
Having this data at the operator’s fingertips facilitates improved plant operations allowing for responses to SCADA system queues based on field collected data and system analysis.
Essentially, SCADA is a collection of hardware and software components.
This collection of components begins with real-time data collected from plant floor devices such as pumps, valves, and transmitters.
These components don’t have to be from a particular vendor, they just need to have a communication protocol that the processor can utilize.
Data collected from the field devices is then passed to the processors such as PLCs. From the processor, the data is distributed to a system of networked devices. These devices may be HMIs, end-user computers, and servers.
On the HMI and end-user computer, graphical representations of the operations exist for operator interactions such as running pumps and opening valves.

Very concise and complete explanation and history of SCADA Systems. It' helps a lot for understanding of SCADA to get a full overview of the its evolution for the Engineers who didn't see it's beginnings. I myself learned a little of SCADA systems at university, but as I started working in the early 2000's, I did it on DCS. The architecture I learned to design was a central field controller conected to the LAN with multiple digital/relay I/Os (and in some cases extension I/O boards) wired to sensors and actuators on the field. A server was connected to it through the LAN and sessions could be started from anywhere with access to the network. From that point a lot of customizations were possible through networking, reporting with SQL and programming additional functions with asp-scripts.

Thank you for this informative video. However what are the prerequisite to learning SCADA?
@scottsommer6480
@scottsommer6480 5 жыл бұрын
There are really no absolute prerequisites, but it would help to understand: 1) 4-20ma loops, 24 VDC switches,. and basic circuitry, 2) PC software and networking, 3) some general understanding of the process you are trying to control, 4) simple concepts of programming of controllers or PLC's, and 5) some technical savvy and curiosity. RealPars courses at Realpars.com can certainly help with items 1, 2, and 4. Having hands-on acccess to a SCADA system and exploring its features, hardware, software and interconnections would be a great way to begin to understand these systems.

Is it mandatory to study firstly PLC programming to start SCADA systems?
@realpars
@realpars 4 жыл бұрын
No, it is not mandatory. You will develop an understanding as you go about the PLC memory layout, since the tags in the HMI will likely need to be pointed to memory areas in the PLC to provide equipment status, setpoints, receive commands, etc. You can develop HMI programs that do not require an understanding of any PLC programming concepts beyond the table tables. In most cases, a controls engineer can provide you with the PLC addresses that correspond to the various HMI tags, so learning the data table structure will come naturally as you work with those addresses.

When do we need to use a DCS and when we need to use SCADA to me they look the same what we can do in SCAD we can do it on DCS so please some one tell me the difference
@scottsommer6480
@scottsommer6480 5 жыл бұрын
This is a question people have been asking for years, although it really is not a critical question. You are correct; they really look quite similar from a topology standpoint. When the term DCS was introduced, it referred to controllers and I/O networked together in a plant with a single-window interface, the operator station. This was quite a shift in architecture from the operator panel with switches and strip charts. Later, laboratories, pilot plants and other processes wanted to have the ability to monitor and control their processes, without the high cost of DCS systems. So PC-based SCADA systems were developed with board-level I/O and PC-based HMI applications. LabView was one of the first and is still the most widely-used of these SCADA systems. Over time, SCADA systems have become more and more powerful, and DCS systems have become less proprietary and lower cost. As a result, there is not a lot of difference between the two any longer.

I also wrote the Modbus 7.x driver (MB1) and Allen Bradley RSLinx 7.x driver. Basically if you are able to get data from an OPC server into iFIX, I wrote it.

1:35 "As you know RTUs and PLCs are microprocessors" is TOTALY wrong. They have "microcontrollers" (read carefuly) embeded inside, but they are not the "microprocessors" (read carefuly)... And the embedded "microcontrollers" have a "microprocessors" embedded inside. So it is like stacking. 1st "microprocessor", 2nd "microcontroller" and then 3rd "controllers" like PLCs RTUs.
@realpars
@realpars 5 жыл бұрын
The intent was to show that RTUs and PLCs are microprocessor-based. Finer distinctions are demonstrated in our more detailed series on RTUs, PLCs, and SCADA. Our training typically is detailed, but still high level, without getting to the arrangement of board-level components.

@realpars
@realpars 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, SCADA can be used in small installations or large installations to visualize and control most any process. Maritime systems I have worked on have been as small as a dozen I/O or as large as several hundred. The hardware and software in a SCADA system is easily scaled to any size system or process, from a single well-head to a complex tanks farm and loading facility.

Could SCADA collect data to help a murder case? Say for example the muderer killed a few people at 4am and hopped in the shower to wash off blood or evidence. Being that it’s a Saturday night with probably few or no other’s using water at that time…could the SCADA system show the exact time the shower was run? Thereby revealing the time of the crime.
@realpars

Very interesting proposition! And yes, if the SCADA were monitoring water usage, you could certainly use the data time stamps to detect water usage at odd times. I will leave the sleuthing to you, as my forte is industrial process control, not forensics. 🙂

The SCADA system offers an automatic real-time controll to softly shut down industrial equipment during outages when installed UPS systems are running out of battery?
@realpars
@realpars 4 жыл бұрын
Not that I am aware of. What I normally dp is set up an input from the UPS to the PLC (hardwired input) so that I know when the system has switched to UPS. I know the UPS will last 15-20 minutes,. so after 10 minutes, I start the orderly shutdown. Many of the latest UPS systems have much better interfaces that should be able to communicate UPS status to the SCADA system via OPC or other interface.

Can ABB & SIEMENS PLCs be connected through SCADA if my plant is as old as 35 years
@realpars
@realpars 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, as long as each of those PLCs has any kind of serial interface. Many companies provide interfaces for every kind of communication protocol. What interfaces does your system have to these PLCs?

* also, use a person that understands systems when applying scada and remember to use " dumb" switches in combination with scada . No one wants an software adjustable safety function wich by accident can be tampered with so automation is good, but to be used with system knowledge. Systems are still sometimes complex
