As a Czech, I must say this guide is very relevant. Amazing work. Also join in on the bandwagon of drinking on a train, it makes the train ride more enjoyable, you can even offer other people a beer or something if you hit it off. ;) Just one thing, if you buy Regiojet tickets to Český Krumlov specifically, please don't wait for the bus on Florenc, that way you'll never get there. Regiojet leaves from Na knížecí bus station. Cheers.

About the transfers between trains, it is useful to use local apps that show the correct platform for the next train.

To the transfers. I believe somebody here already told you this but still. Simplest way to transfer is to look for the big screen with all departures which is usually located in the main hall of the station. Every train / bus connection (even periodic connections on the same line but in different times) have unique alphanumeric designation which is also shown in the IDOS app. After you confirm that the train / bus number is the same on the departure screen as in the app, you just look for a platform it is departing from. This is applicable for almost every public transport line and pretty much all train lines even international ones. Just be more careful with not-public transport bus lines especially on smaller stations without any departure screens. Because they are not using the state infrastructure (like every train) and they are not obligated to some agreements with municipalities (like companies serving public transport bus lines), they can mark they buses / departures however they want. If there are no departure screens like on most bus stations you just use the google maps or the map feature in the IDOS app to find the station and then you use the final destination shown in the app compared with final destination shown on the paper timetable on bus station to determine if you are going in the right direction.

Because of having a Czech name, we were not allowed visas until after the Revelation and so I was the first of my family to return to the Czech Republic in 1992. I can't wait to go again someday and bring my sons.

I have actually been to St. John Under the Rock! I went by car, though, so I'm glad to know it is fairly easy to get to by public transit. It's really beautiful and I'd love to go back. There's another smaller church with a graveyard that's very pretty, and there's a little museum with lots of old timey things and photos from the town. We didn't go to the pub, but there was a band playing and everyone looked like they were having a fun time.

We drink in the train because in not that faraway time it was the best method how to survive the trip without getting seriously angry, as the ČD ("čekej dýl" or "wait longer") state company was quite bad. So we were getting pissed instead of getting pissed off. We also drink during most activites. This might not be completely true. Except the last part. If you bought an online ticket to a train, in theory the train you need to switch should wait for you, so even if your first train is late, the other one should still be in the station. That might be true for larger groups only and maybe they won't bother with individuals. Also there is a limit, maybe ten minutes of waiting max. The railroad now works quite better than few years ago though, despite my criticism. Highwy busses bleeded them badly and they had to change significantly.

just one thing to add. yes, you will be charged extra in the train, but only if the desk at station of origin of your travel is closed, sometimes locals say another station nearby they departed from, because they know that the station is not having the cash desk or it is closed. i even got into situation, when the conductor himself said something like "well, i will put your ticked from that station, it is one off, but you will not get charged extra so it will pay off" great video :) not everyone get the details right.

Fun fact, idos actually works with planes and integrated systems too, so you can find connection from basically anywhere. You'll just enter the public transport stop and city it is in and the app will find you a way. Word of advice though, if you intend to plan a more complex trip, it's better to use it on a PC and print out the result.

A little tip for commuter trains... If you tell the conductor, that you're traveling from a stop that does not have cash desk (as in naming the station, they're not that stupid) or is not integrated (or possibly you're traveling between integration systems), you won't be charged the extra, as you had no way of getting the ticket at the stop.

I once took a train in Czechia. Because we didn't know how long we would stay in the place (apparently the tickets are bound to time) we decided to buy our tickets at the station whenever we were ready for it. Unfortunately we had to find out that that station didn't had tickets machines, the ticket desk was already closed and the online tickets you could buy with a Czech bank account or a credit card. We had neither. In the end we had to call someone that did had a credit card to buy the tickets for us. So, pay attention to that and avoid the mistakes that we made.

You have also buy ticket in the train, simply say there was cashdesk closed. No stress. If you will be charged, it is less than half an Euro. It is very convenient to order a ticket from a mobile phone, it is interesting that Czechs love to order anything online, practically everyone has a visa account. In contrast, even close neighbors, e.g. Germans, prefer more cash...

I took the wrong train from Kutná Hora back to Prague, the lady at the desk told me it was direct but it wasn't. When I got to Kolín, the train started moving backwards: PANIC! I left the train at the first stop in the middle of nowhere, but it was at that moment that an experienced ticket inspector, a red-haired angel (not much red hair on his head though), hopped off the train as he noticed me and my dumb and lost expression. He didn't speak English but helped me get back on the train, did his best to make me understand that I had to get back to Kutná Hora, showing me the timing of the next train on his phone and also pointing at the right train from the window. Just one of the many kind people I've met in the Czech Republic! One thing I didn't understand though, and many tourists like me didn't either, is how you get a seat on a train: do you need to clarify that you want to reserve a seat when purchasing a ticket? Because a guy on the train started repeating "rezervace minibar" until we left the seats to him. First, what the hell does "rezervace minibar" mean? :) PLEASE EXPLAIN! Also, I guess he paid for his seats and you can not sit there and you have to pay for your seat beforehand? I'm asking because when buying the tickets no one asked if we wanted to get a seat.

I experienced something similar on the way from České Budějovice to Vyšší Brod. I traveled to Rybník (a station near Austrian border), where I had to transfer to another train. After I reached near to Vyšší Brod, I was not able to make the door open, and I get off the train in Loučovice, two stops further. Finally, I got on the train in reverse direction and get where I wanted to.

Rezervace minibar is just one place for trolley they serve refreshment. So he didnt pay for it, he is part of train stuff. When you buy ticket online on the web of Czech railways or on IDOS, you can reserve seat free. You have to choose it and then you get it either randomly or you can select seat from image. If you buy ticket in the cash desk, seat ticket usually cost 35Kč and you have to ask for it. You can reserve seat only for fast trains, IC , EC. There is no way to reserve seat on local trains.

I dont know this app, but from IDOS or Czech railways web you can buy tickets for senior. So its possible to buy it online.

My grandma has a summer cabin in total shi*hole where only way how to get there without car is go thru 1 km of jungle and I mean like it's forest on hill where you can barely go thru, so 1 km feels like whole day expedition to unknown land and you never know if you find way to train stop and ofcourse, train is going like once in 2 hours, when you miss it, you just walk on rails to civilisation. Don't ask me how much km it is, you just walk. 😀

BTW: That terrible waiting in lines for buses like if it was year 1980 will hopefully end in next years, at least in central bohemian region where it should be the same as in Prague, instad of going thru shame line around driver and listening his redneck talks, you will just go inside thru all doors and ticket inspector may check you or maybe not. We already buy tickets in PID lítačka app and if there will be some machines inside buses, it will reduce amount of people who buy tickets from driver a lot. Some buses can have 20 minutes delay just becuase of lines and I believe that driver should drive, not selling tickets. If this is gonna happen, I will probably buy pass even some zones outside Prague and I will finally be able to travel without this annoying going thru driver who is ALWAYS rude and never explains anything, where to put your card or when etc..he just yells at you that you do it wrong. This is not happening in trains with ticket inspectors, you show them ticket/card/QR code and they scan it, so it's not your problem how to do it. Lines for train tickets at train stations in Czechia are pretty fast compared to other countries like Poland where you have to buy ticket for specific train and a lot of them have mandatory seat reservation. The vast majority of train tickets here are flexible, you just say you want ticket from A to B and you have it in like 3 seconds, no more questions like in other countries. Direct train to Kutná Hora is fake, because it goes to main station which is located kilometers from actual city, so you will have to change again or use local bus or walk many km to center. Someone says that Franz Joseph is responsible for that, someone says commies did it, but railway corridor goes totally around city, you have to switch to local shthole train and yes, even when Kutná Hora is important UNESCO historical sight, it's absolute shithole with no shops and generally there is nothing except cathedral and few other sights. 5:50 - yes, that's something typically Czech, or when you are in bigger group, that one who can run faster will hold door and delay train for you. 😀 And another thing, when bus stop is on demand, always press the button, don't expect that driver will stop when you stay in front of the door, they do it on purpose I believe.

Sladká angličtina. 🙂 Ale abych neměl jenom blbý kecy, upozorním na jednu chybu, která se vyskytla hned dvakrát: "nature" se nepoužívá v tom smyslu, jako že jdu do přírody, na to je nature v angličtině příliš abstraktní, něco jako matka příroda. Landscape se v tomto smyslu také nepoužívá. To je spíš ve významu, že někde stojím, tak ten výhled mohu nazvat "landscape". Když ale jdu na vandr, tak nejdu do "landscape". Trochu lepší by bylo třeba country nebo countryside, ale žádné anglické slovo není 1:1 k tomu, jak se v češtině v tomto významu používá "příroda".

You wouldn't want to experience a labor camp. This camp was here during communism. People were sent to the quarry here, however, it was not because they were criminals, but for similar reasons as there were gulags in Russia. It was only there for a few years, then there was a political prison for a few years, and from 1955 a school for the communist secret public security, i.e. the police, and finally there was the archive of the ministry.
