I started with basic levels of MSFS2020 a few years ago, and today I had my first attempt at VATSIM. What I experienced was definitely next level and quite intimidating. This video shows me where I need to learn things to become more efficient. I’m fortunate your tutorial is with my aircraft of choice. I’ve got a lot to learn with the flight plan modifications, especially while in the air. Your automated landing showed me how I missed the localizer. I had no idea what the controller meant, and now I do thanks to this video.

Just wanted to say thank you for this video. This was the one that finally got me confident enough to take the jump and actually fly on VATSIM, as opposed to just sitting listening. Have had a profile on it since 2021 but was getting anxious just sitting as an observer lol. Almost immediately after watching this video, spent about 4 hours over 2 flights on the network and it was honestly the coolest thing I've done on a flight sim.

Thanks for putting what was being said in text during the ATC. I find a lot of the time I cannot understand a word they are saying. It seems to be a competition sometimes who can talk the fastest.

That’s whack. As a real world albeit out of currency CPL one of the most important things I’ve learned about radio communications is to ALWAYS advocate for yourself unabashedly. Doesn’t mean being pushy or annoying just never be intimidated or timid on the radio. You’re the one in the air. Honestly just ask the controller to “repeat last transmission” ANY time u need clarification. That’s on the controller to ensure they are communicating clearly. If they give you guff they’re poser control. POCON as opposed to TRACON…get it?…..get it? My bad with the dad pun. Text is still a cool idea for disability access etc but more realistic to hash it out with the other human in real time.

When I get told something I’m always quick to acknowledge even if I don’t fully understand the parameters of the instructions. I just get way too scared that ATC will think I’m a dumbass who doesn’t even know what they’re doing 😂

@@SyFlys I think it’s obviously imperative to have a solid grasp on proper comm procedures. ‘The Pilot’s Radio Communication Handbook’ is a classic just get the updated edition. Beyond that just practice. If you don’t understand what they mean because u just don’t know comm procedures, you’re not gunna have a good time. So as long as you actually DO know what you’re doing they have ZERO problem with pilots asking them to repeat themselves. In fact they want you to do that…otherwise very bad things happen. Can’t speak to how accommodating VATSIM is to newbies I’ve never been on. hopefully there’s some leeway but I get people want it to be realistic so…gotta learn those comms.

No worries, my first flight I wasn’t even permitted off the ground because I didn’t have a flight plan. Got into a mess with Dutch controllers. I watched tutorials and learned quickly. Don’t give up, once you get the hang of it, you will love it!

Nice video, pretty helpful, just want to say that at 51:00 you changed to local qnh which isn’t correct to do unless atc clears you to an altitude, you were cleared to a flight level which is std So whenever you are cleared for a fl you fly with std qnh When cleared for altitude you fly with local qnh That’s why he clarified qnh 1010 when clearing you to descend to 3000 at 51:49

Just so you know, you put in transition level 4500ft on the PERF page in transition altitude. Transition altitude is fixed on charts and level is variable and by ATC. Besides that, great flight, loved to see another full flight again!

I haven't done my first flight because of anxiety with talking on the radio but nevertheless, what I don't get is you can plan your route on simbrief and then the arrival runway at your destination could be completely different to what you planned. Is it just a matter of updating the route in the FMC? How do you then work out which TRANS to use?

Just did my first, it took a long while to get my clearance delivery and a long while to take off due to traffic, I had to ask the guys to repeat stuff a few times but I did it although it took so long that the controllers at my destination disconnected and had yo go to unicom.

Does vatsim always use the most up to date AIRAC? If so does it provide AIRAC updates for the users as well as the updated charts in chartfox ?? Vatsim uses the most up to date airac but there's not always a great deal of updates month to month, navigraph is not required, chartfox will do just fine.

Just curious, are you a320 rated In real life? I ask because I’m a380 rated and your preflight, etc, I could follow and relate, albeit with some differences but generally speaking, especially if you’re not already an Airbus pilot, you could easily pass as one. Nice video and very enlightening considering I only just heard of vatsim literally 2 hours ago. Interesting how a multi-crew flight could have been accomplished solo, not to mention filing flight plans etc. I have MSFS on Xbox but I understand it does not support vatsim.

Two questions: how did you infer from ATIS information that departure runway is 8R and not 8L? What is the criteria for flaps 1 vs flaps 2 takeoff? The atis tells you which runway is the active. I use flaps 2 as standard for the a32nx. You can use a performance calculator to determine the correct flap setting for takeoff based on aircraft weight, runway legth, surface condition and weather etc if you really want to but it's not required for the sim.

To answer your first question… It caught me off guard as well. If you listen carefully to the ATIS INFO Y, you will hear the runway being given as “RUNWAY IN USE ZERO E I G H T R”. The number 8 is spelled out and the letter R are all said together and it’s not given phonetically. Hope that helps!

When I first started flying I was FAR more intimidated by taking up radio space than I was of flying the aircraft. Your trepidation is normal but the reward will be great. Plenty of youtube tutorials on the basics of radio communication and honesty even with IFR comm procedures, once you get into it, the mystery fades away very quickly. You can do it.

could someone explain to me, if RealSimPilot takes this callsign and loads in the game, and there's another player somewhere in the world that wants to fly the same real-life flight from the same airfield, wouldn't that create problems for the ATC and the players? How do you solve this issue?

When you connect to vpilot it would say 'callsign already in use' you would have to change your callsign. What I usually do is just change one digit up or down and use that callsign. You won't be able to log on the network with the same callsign if it is already in use
