I was wondering what time of day and what were the lighting conditions. I would say the water was glass, sun was low on the horizon. Problem I have in low light I get a soft shot and noise. My equipment should somewhat be able to handle it, Canon 5D mkIV and 100-400 mkII f-5.8. I’m in my first year concentrating on birds and excited to get a clean shot and want to step up to the “art” shot. Ray, I’m in San Diego and enjoyed your presentation for the Bird Festival last week.

Thanks for watching and the question. For this one you are correct about the lighting. The settings were 1/640 @ f/5.6, ISO 160 so certainly not pushing the settings far at all and definitely something you could get with any setup I'd say. It's all about the light on subject and background being entirely in shade. Happy shooting!

How do you create a Retouch layer? Is it by changing default name of new layer or a preset?

You got it, it's nothing more than a standard new layer that I rename "retouch". I do that so often that I recorded an action of those steps and assigned a keyboard shortcut to it so I can press those keys and get the layer quickly.
