@webx1352 жыл бұрын
As a millennial concerned about the virus, I can tell you why my concern was so high earlier on. SImply put, it wasn't about me. I didn't care if I caught some bug. Perhaps with the exception of some of the potentially-permanent side-effects. Several friends got it, and they basically coughed a few times. Some didn't even know they had it. But my dad had several co-morbidities. I work with a lot of old guys in Engineering. They mostly had co-morbidities. My sister has several young kids, which was a concern. And then with all of that, the medical system hadn't caught up with the sudden change. If this wasn't contageous and spreading to people who ARE vulnerable, I would never have worn the mask. I wouldn't have cared if anyone else wore masks, especially anti-vaxxers and other science-denialists. If some Alex Jones type wants to follow some conspiracy and get a disease, then if they die, they die. They want to deny natural selection? Let them have a demonstration. So while I generally agree with Maher's skepticism over the virus, I totally disagree with his general narrative about us being spineless and living in fear, afraid of some bug that won't kill us. We aren't mostly afraid for OURSELVES, we're afraid for those who WOULD be affected by the virus, and doing our part to protect THEM, and to establish herd immunity to stop the spread and let the virus go extinct.

I agree with you; just because people are young, doesn’t mean you are invincible. COVID19 is a contiguous virus, and it’s goal is to look for a warm body to infect, doesn’t matter what age you are. When you are young it is still highly recommended that you get vaccinated for better protection against hospitalization and death.

Its not just that but the fact that even if an infection is not dangerous, mild even, it can have long term or permanent effects. It took me 4 months to get the endurance for my sport back in 2020 and another 8 months to get rid of some pretty annoying lingering symptoms. Thats a grand total of 12 months for 2 weeks of illness. So, naturally I got myself double vaccinated in 2021 and the third one comes up soon. That said, if you're smart enough to get vaccinated, the chances of all of this are extremely slim, but you can still infect others who arent because being immune doesnt mean the virus bounces off your skin or something... However it may be, the solution to either problem for most people is readily available: a vaccine

Vaccines do more to get you out of your first five years than they do to get you through your last twenty. People are living longer because of medical science in general. I should have been dead already but meds and gadgets keep me going. Already beat the initial estimate by a year or two. Ten more years is not out of the question thanks to medical science.
@thehighpriestess9782 жыл бұрын
I am not so sure about people living longer. It seems none of my older relatives died young, even back then, unless it was an accident or war related. My relatives that were born in the late 1800s and early 1900s lived very long, well into their 80s and 90s, and one made it to 107. It wasn't modern medicine that kept them alive that long either, they died at home. They were all from Germany, some stayed there, and others moved to New York Brooklyn and Queens,in the 1920s, so I can't agree with that.
@Mrst3lios892 жыл бұрын
@@thehighpriestess978 to put things into perspective, humans' life expectancy has always been between 80-90 (excluding outliers) but medicine allows *more* people to reach that age and exceed it. So, for example, testing has advanced considerably which allows doctors to balance our bodies with medicine and through various other practices before they reach severe and dangerous exhaustion levels. So, medicine does not cure death; it just prolongs life and increases survival rates from diseases, accidents, operations, etc etc. Your family might just have good genes... but, those with poorer genes which includes most of us, are given the chance now to survive longer. Edit: I would differ you to a clip from Westworld where Hopkins describes it better than I: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJnVkmaLlKhobNk

@@Mrst3lios89 WELL, that may be so, but from my experiences in the past 10 traumatic years, much depends on the doctors, the hospital, the medicines and who is doing the testing. The actual physical issues from not allowing immune systems to progress naturally. The hospitalizations are going to be staggering.

It is a shame that I was always making more money as a 12 year old than at any other time in my life (I am now in my 50s) but government has a way of punishing ambition, and innovation. My chosen field was wildlife and evolution lecturing, but with the animal regulations enacted in the Clinton years, made that dream of my own lecture company, faded. Mr. Welch, I was in college in the mid 1980s, at the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. My best friend, who was not an actual brother, died of HIV-related cancer in 1991. Many of 'us' in college at the time muddled our way through that with ZERO vaccine against that virus, and only half-assed medical information to work from. The "normal stuff" of adolescence and youth normally would have involved more promiscuity and sleeping around for "us". Somehow, we didn't end up emotionally scarred from working our way through early adulthood in a less transmissible, but more fatal (slow-moving) epidemic. This 'drama' about how emotionally scarred young folks are going to be is massively overblown. Please stop that BS.
