how can you claim you're the party of Lincoln but still wave around confederate flags (fyi, Lincoln didn't take too fondly to confederates)...
@wendyweaver87496 жыл бұрын
My Thoughts - Robert E. Lee and the entire confederacy were traitors. Let's be clear on this fact. Lee led an army to destroy the United States of America. Lee is not by any stretch of the imagination an American hero. Lee gave his all to destroy this country. If any man led an army against the United States today, would we be erecting monuments in his honor? 18 U.S. Code § 2381 - Treason “Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.” (June 25, 1948, ch. 645, 62 Stat. 807; Pub. L. 103-322, title XXXIII, § 330016(2)(J), Sept. 13, 1994, 108 Stat. 2148.) Similarly, why should the confederate flag be revered when it was created by traitors? If you believe the confederate flag represents a "way of life" or "heritage" then you are honoring traitors such as the officers of the confederacy armies and the officials of the states that seceding and fought the U.S. You can better honor the common soldiers by being honest about the history of the Civil War and the damage done to the South by the traitors who killed and injured the common people because they wanted to continue to enslave people solely because of the color of their skin. Giving prominence and honor to the confederate flag means you still believe in the confederacy, not the United States, and you still honor those who believed in slavery.

@Killer sheep "How do we talk to people who disregard facts, science, math , history, & common *sence*?" You can start by spelling *sense* correctly, otherwise those same individuals you profess to talk to will ignore everything you have to say because if your grammar and spelling aren't up to par, they'll simply call you a hypocrite. This game of communication is not easy, even worse now because nobody is communicating with each other anymore, which is why you as an individual need to make sure you are prepared to express yourself in a way that won't marginalize or belittle them and see your side of the view, and that unfortunately begins with your command of the English language. Good luck.

Mr. D: Prof. Goodwin's very genuine and hilarious embarrassment at her little throwaway line was wonderful. And I actually felt very good about it. She looked at Mr. Sullivan and saw and heard someone making a statement about how he would suggest Americans protect women's rights, not a guy sitting across from her defined completely by his sexual preference. That is where the country has to go in the way it treats all people, and before Pres. Trump, that was the direction I thought we were headed in. Trumpians would be amazed if they'd only look at an X-Group worker and see a worker instead of a member of X-Group, at how much less X-Group would insist on being treated as an interest group. How many Republicans hire an incompetent European-American who screws up a job or doesn't show up to work and say, "I'm never going to make that mistake again and hire one of _them_ ," compared to the number who would think or say those words if the worker happened to be Hispanic, or African-American, or gay, or Muslim or whatever? At the point when all, or virtually all Americans say, "That guy/gal screwed up. I'll never make that mistake again and hire him/her," we will have moved beyond the "identity politics" Republicans claim to abhor. Is it not Trump voters who need to take the lead on this and rebuke their president for getting very little done that significantly benefits the country (the new NAFTA seems to be little different from the old NAFTA on matters of significance, for example) while continuing to flatter them and degrade others not for their accomplishments or failures but simply because of their identities. Yay to Prof. Goodwin!

They then began a long march to bring Communism to the west. You *LITERALLY TREASONOUS* Democrats are on their side. All of these pro-feminism, pro-gay, pro-immigration stances are not accidents. They are planned attacks by the Cultural Marxists of the Frankfurt School, designed to take down western civilization and turn it Communist. They are based on a Post Modernist philosophy called Critical Theory. This is proven FACT yet you low IQ MORONS call it a "conspiracy theory", while simultaneously completely believing that Russia "HACKED" our election with zero evidence of it, lmao. Yes POWER begets POWER, and it's time for humanity - including supposedly EDUCATED people/liberals & neoliberals -- to wake up about human nature, the VERY REAL and bloodly lessons of history and POWER. The founder acknowledged this through designing 'checks and balances' --- and like in all rises of fascism/corporatism/1%ism/totalitarianism (maybe because the elite see what is coming along with climate change) -- all which is what we are seeing NOW - IN PLAIN SIGHT in the USA (esp fascism, as other places) - 'checks and balances' are, with the swamp of international crony capitalism, being eliminated. There are none so blind as them who WOULD NOT SEE! Those 3 million may as well have stayed at home. The electoral college is undemocratic. Period. Gerrymandering is undemocratic. Picking partisan Supreme Court justices is undemocratic. I feel so bad for Soledad during this whole show. The amount of restraint she showed as Sullivan multiple times created this false narrative out of "what people made of this whole Kavanaugh hearing" as being some large scale dangerous time for white men - then kept steamrolling over her clearly articulated completely different analysis and counter that NO, this "thing you're talking about "Andrew is primarily an old white Republican theatrical strategy to whip up their base... all the while Bill gave no real time for her to present a strong counter because he was sick of the topic. Huge fan of Bill and there's no doubt it's his show and he navigates what he wants, but this was _not_ a sticking point that had already been picked over for 3 weeks by "the liberal media". Neverthless Bill pushed to move on and Soledad sucked it up with a kind of "graceful" acceptance- yet Andrew kept returning to the point, each time compounding his non-understanding what she was saying with misstatements of what she had NOT said. Anyone with a halfway decent eye for people's facial expressions could spell out her thought balloons as "what in the world is going on here? He's not heard one thing I've tried to say- and apparently Bill's just not interested in teasing this out for clarity".... Just when I thought "Andrew on a rampage" couldn't get any worse, with time ticking away and 10:18 Bill finally directing a question for Soledad to answer, before Bill can read it, at 10:25 Andrew again steals the thunder and tries to tag onto the prior answer---which then distracts Bill, and we see Soledad play the good sport, but turning to look at Andrew with slight perturbed look of "ok, let's hear what comes out next", then finally gets her question and thoughtfully answers it.... only to have once again Andrew lecture yet one more time something "liberals just don't realize", making the preposterous statement at 11:56 that then made me laugh watching Soledad trying her damndest to tamp down her "Oh FFS, Man!" silent reaction!

There’s an inherent contradiction in Bridges saying “Go local” is a conservative mantra, which is right, but so too is the “Personal responsibility” and “Don’t wait for government” lines he espouses. Ultimately it’s going to take collective action to get the government you want which, as Maher correctly identifies, is the only institution large enough to deal with these huge systemic crises.

@@robinsss I think everyone has a different perspective. I have never lived in the US but my studies of different democracies have led me to believe that a lot of the "tribalism" that America is facing is largely a product of only having two parties. In proportional representative democracies and federations where there are no nationally operating parties, people seem to be freer to develop their own perspective on matters, instead of just picking a side and falling into the mo(u)ld. When political parties are forced to negotiate with each other the people's interests are heard the loudest. It's unwise for any multi-party democracy to allow any single party to govern on it's own.

@flopot5076 жыл бұрын
The US has been the richest country on Earth basically since it’s inception. When British and Hessian soldiers invaded New York during the revolution they were astonished at the wealth that the average citizen possessed. I am not suggesting that starving children should not be fed, but I would remind you that it is the responsibility of individual people to take care of their neighbors and themselves. If they choose to use the government as a tool, then so be it, but there are other, more cost effective ways to make this happen, if more people are willing to engage in their communities. Mostly I just wanted to be a dick and blast the dead beat parents who care more about taking care of themselves, but who are so often portrayed as helpless victims.

There is justification... a credible witness. When do women's accounts and experiences and pain get to be taken into consideration? As a woman who's been assaulted, watching how people defend and even uphold someone like Kavanaugh as a victim while mocking and berating Ford has honestly been retraumatizing. Because now I really know that people just don't seem to care... Additionally, Sulliovan kept interrupting O'Brian while being able to make his terrible, unfounded claims.

Doris is optimistic, but she is fundamentally wrong about what this country wants. This country wants to live in peace, separately. That's always been the magic trick of this country. We're basically five different countries regionally, but we're the United States. It's never been the citizens that want to stay together, it's been the federal government. Which I want to stay together too, but saying that us citizens want to be inclusive is just not accurate. That's literally why Trump got elected right after Obama, and why Republicans and Democrats have been alternating the White House for seventy years. At the end of the day we are not united. And I think in the next couple of decades there's going to be a major event that will threaten our United status at it's core. Trump is just the first step

Strongly disagree, sir. "E Pluribus Unum" ..."Out of Many, One!" It's at the core of the Republic. It's on America's Great Seal (or official logo, if you like). It's even on our cash. It's the balance to the chaos and discord of our broad freedoms. Which is why white supremacist and fascist-loving Steven Miller and Donald Trump want to remove it from everywhere the government uses it. So far, it's only been removed from the "Presidential Challenge Coin", which trump, of course, turned into his personal marketing tool. It's sick, disgusting, twisted, fundamentally Un-American. The problem is that the more the Republicans squeeze and undereducated the poor and middle-classes (and blame the Democrats and Liberals for the resulting hardships) the more fearful/hurt/defensive/resentful/frustrated/angry/and finger-pointing Americans become. It's a win/win/win for Republican politicians, their donors, and big businesses.

Pssst, there IS another option, since ya mention it... I know it might be shocking to here this, but there’s a whole world of actual leftist politics which, aside from Bernie (who’s what I’d consider more to the right as a leftist politics go, as he’s a social democrat), doesn’t really exist on a national stage in this country, but could, and really should.. You want to try something “new”, maybe just try what so many of the greatest Americans who ever lived have wanted to try since the late 19th/early 20th century... maybe try that whole socialism thing... just a thought.. maybe if people had their material needs met, they wouldn’t hate each other so much? .. or we could just keep going down the neoliberal, “the market can solve anything” path, since it’s worked so well for us over the last 40 years... Honestly though, we kind of have to act fast if we want to save this country, or our world, bc we are quite literally up against the clock for the countdown to ecological disaster, unless we fix this shit REALLY damn fast... our grandchildren and great grandchildren (I’m a millennial, almost 32) will be the last generations of the world to see liberal democracy, unless climate change is addressed really goddamn soon.. ✊🏾✊🏿✊🏼✊🏽❤️🏴 (and please no “argumentum ad Venezuela”, bc that’s not what anyone who wants socialism is talking about... I expect that this crowd is smart enough to know that, but you always have one or two ppl talk about Venezuela, or North Korea, the USSR, etc.... nobody who’s fighting for socialism wants anything like those systems, so don’t waste my time commenting on authoritarianism, bc I won’t be listening, or answering that piffle)

The third party formed by a splinter of the Dems would guarantee that the GOP would run the show for a long time. They will vote in lockstep, just as they now follow Trump while we argue with ourselves. We'd end up with a Paul LePage as President. Wait . . . we already have one.
@fourdeck336 жыл бұрын
You seem to need to learn the difference between social democracy and socialism. You say not to mention Venezuela but that is a socialist country, and guess what, they also would have prefered things turned out differently for them. People who advocate for socialism often point to the Scandinavian model, but they are social democracies, not socialist countries and they do not seek to end capitalism as socialism and even democratic socialists do, rather they have a mixed, well regulated, capitalist society with social programs, and social programs aren't the same as socialist programs.

The problem with Socialism is that it assumes a perfect population in order to run a perfect society. People are not perfect, so the only way for a perfect society to function is with the authoritarianism you don’t want to mention, which has corrupted every legitimate attempt at socialism in the history of the world. Socialism is a nice idea, but there are always going to be some who take advantage, and some who resist the loss of liberty. When that happens you always end up with the purges, or the killing fields. Socialism should be a non-starter by now, but people just don’t want to be honest about history.
@fourdeck336 жыл бұрын
flopot So true. Apparently he doesn't want to talk about Venezuela. Well, we can talk about every other failed attempt. I was born in the Eastern bloc and left as a refugee with my family in the mid 80's. It sucked, I still remember the empty shops and my parents having to line up at four in the morning for bread and milk and toilet paper. Yes, there was free college, but a lot of very hungry and oppressed students. Now I'm not saying people shouldn't strive for free college and other social safety nets, it's an investment in the country's future, but there's a right way and a dumb, failed on dozens of occasion way to try and achieve it. Social democracy and democratic socialism are not interchangeable terms.

He's mostly worried that liberals are alienating white male voters by painting them all with the same brush. I think he may be right; Democrats certainly are way more appealing to women, minorities, etc. But at the same time he kept making it seem like the media and the left are SOOO demonizing all white men, and he was kinda painting the white men as the victims of our modern times. Ugh. They really don't have it that hard.... and wrongful accusations about sexual assault (which is what Sullivan was so concerned about) are about 2% of all cases.
