Stephen Hendry's Cue Tips

Күн бұрын

Reanne Evans invites Stephen to her practice table in the midlands at Kingswinford Snooker Centre to play a frame and chat about her success and her time on the tour. The pair discuss the future of women's snooker and Reanne's duo battles paired with Ronnie O'Sullivan. Reanne opens up about the tremor that's recently been holding her back and Stephen relates to the mindset behind her incredible success. The midlands have historically been a hotbed of snooker talent and Reanne's impressive resume sits her at top of this talent list. I hope you enjoy the frame!

Reanne's contribution to the sport should never be underestimated - but by and large, it really is. What James Wattana did for Asian snooker, Reanne has done for women's snooker (James would make a great guest too I reckon!). And having seen Bai Yulu in action, honestly, she is frighteningly good. When she does make her breakthrough - it might be very soon, it might be a bit later, but it will happen - she'll be a match for anyone on the main tour!

Stephen, I discovered snooker in the 80s and fell in love with it - including with Steve Davis. Then you came, somewhat reserved (reservation that my immature brain mistook for arrogance), and crushed everyone - including Steve.. Being an inexperienced teen, I hated you for it (and my English was very rudimentary, so I didn't get any nuances). Thanks to your fantastic videos (and my English having improved), I discover a great human, with a great sense of humour, who's able to make anyone talk and who's tailoring the interview to the process. I now love you, Stephen! Also, in addition to being a great player, Reanne is a superb pundit, just as yourself: it would be wonderful if she could comment more matches and even better if you and Reanne could do that together.

This is a Meritocracy as Barry Hearn always says. No reason to complicate things, no reason for identity politics either. If women want to compete with men on the Main tour they can simply fight their way through Cue School just like any other male struggling with visa issues or whatever the case may be. My point is all you hear is Equality this Equality that. Here’s your equality. Pick your Top 10 women or 20 or so and they will get the opportunity to challenge each other or other men randomly drawn or course and let the free market play out. That’s as fair as it gets. I’m not nearly suggesting splitting the Academy in half Because this has been a Men’s tour for nearly a 100 years, so excuse me.

I'm glad a conversation about the women's game came up. I would say I'm more interested in the future of snooker then ever, as I really feel that Snooker & Darts can be the first sports to really evolve into open-gender competition. We're in a really tough spot as a society at the moment when it comes to gender in sport as men have an overwhelming advantage in most, if not all sports. However, Snooker & Darts have the least amount of entry requirements to allow for women to really compete against the men. The risk of having a main tour and a women's tour is the best female player, only needs to be better than other females to be a success. Then when they try & compete with the men, they're not match sharp and they're unable to handle the pressure added, just as Reanne mentioned. I spent many years playing snooker (3/4 table, I cheat...) with the same locals in my old club & I really felt that I was getting better as I was winning all the time, but then I moved clubs and realized my competition was holding my ability back. I found myself improving massively when I was getting beaten daily by better players, to the point where I'm now able to compete at their level. I think Stephen is right, there should be a Women's World Championship each year, but in my opinion we need to find a way of building better female snooker players on the main tour. My last statement is that it needs to be monitored closely to see if Steve Davis' comments about women and their "single-minded determination" or something else which prevents them for truly competing against men, is a hurdle they can't overcome. If we find that women will never be able to compete, then I'm open to both gender's having a tour, but only after we have evidence to prove this is the best course to take.
@seanhickin9959

The long answer is, because traditionally darts and snooker were games in working mens/gentlemens clubs, it was downtime from being the sole breadwinner so men had earned that space and women had largely little interest in such games, but since then there's been a huge decades long op on to bring women into the tax pool by guilting them out of traditional roles and into the workplace, now women 'no longer need men' and are invading every male space without a flicker of respect or consideration, cheered on by other women who don't even show up or support them (empty stands at womens football matches, poor sales on woke comics etc. etc.), so ultimately women occupying these spaces is a relatively new phenomena (disclaimer: there's always been women playing these sports but it was very fringe) The short answer is, sports are essentially extentions of centuries old male hunting skills/prowess, men are wired to be better at it, women are politically motivated to be involved, big difference

Ye there’s a club table outside there me and my mates were having a few frames one day and she was walking in and out of private room , very full of herself, I politely said hello, and she just threw her nose up in the air as if we were scum, very full of herself, to be mild that is 😂👍
