Reap the Tides Upgrade | 10 Cards to Replace for Under $20 [Commander Legends Precon Deck]

In this video, Joel discusses the new Commander preconstructed deck, Reap the Tides, a deck that will be released alongside Commander Legends, in mid November. These decks are well-tested and are good right out of the box, but what's great about Magic the Gathering, is it is a customizable card game. Joel discusses 10 cards that he would replace first, for under $20, that would make the deck better and more consistent without breaking the bank. Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait is a great draw engine at the helm of this deck, and velocity is a great way to stay ahead of your opponents. Let's maximize that and replace sub-optimal cards to make this deck competitive! We are going to go over all of the updates/upgrades/revamps. Check out the video. Retreat from coralhelm and sakura tribe scout are an infinite land drop combo with the 3 bounce lands the deck has. And the 2 are like $1 to add in. There's also skyshroud ranger and walking atlas who can do the sakura job too.

Thanks for this great guide! I just started playing MTG and Reap the Tides is my first commander deck. Those are great suggestions! I also swapped Simic Guildgate which is a blue/green land that doesn't bring anything else with Tanglepool Bridge, which has indestructable. You can then use Sawtusk Demolisher on your own land to create 3/3 beasts tokens.

I just purchased this Commander set, and ran it against vampire and elemental decks. Out of the gate, it feels vulnerable as the land ramps up. But, does seem cool when the commander, krakens, and other get out on the board. These upgrade suggestions seem to help, thanks!

Loved watching this and the other Upgrade video, I'm getting both when they are released and I am just going through my collection to see what other Kraken, Octopuses, Lev's or Serpents I can find to put in it. So far Deep-Sea Kraken from Mind vs Might 7UUU 9/9 Kraken 2U Suspend 9 is an option. I also have a Thing in the Ice that may worth it too ($4-5 card though)

I got this precon (without upgrades) for my sons 8 year birthday. He plays magic, but we aren't native english speakers, so he has trouble to know the details of all cards. He's smart and have a good memory but it's a little harder for him to play commander because it's more cards for him to understand. He plays well once he knows the decks he uses. I'm sometimes surprised how smart he is when he tells me potential creatures i could attack with, and when i do, he has a counter move already planned.

interesting thoughts. i bought this deck so i could be taught how to play and now i've upgraded it (it's probably no where near the precon now) and instead of going down the creature type synergy route, i went for the landfall theme. still got a bunch of the big creatures in there though

I actually love this precon deck a lot pretty good value for the money easily upgradable and I love the large sea creature theme it reminds me of a certain serpent that came out in m10 many years ago that I loved playing only now years later there is better support for the deck unfortunately I’m not really a fan of the other precon I wish they gave more support because the reap the tides deck is clearly a better deck out of the box and that is because it can ramp and draw a ton of cards with just your commander not including the other cards in the deck and unfortunately white and red aren’t allowed to ramp or draw cards lol

Trample with these beaters just makes sense. Heroic intervention-I want to keep my big boys and this deck is going to look scary once it starts going. Triumph of the hoards. I've put in Archetype of Imagination and Wonder in just to give opponents less of a chance to block. Also added about 5-6 more counter spell cards to help keep Aesi out. I've played with him constantly being destroyed or removed and it slows it down drastically.

I built an amazing Arixmethes Sea monster tribal deck and most these upgrades are in that deck. I want to take out some cards but add something you didn't include, Archetype of Imagination. I want to add her because, for whatever reason, they put Stormtide Leviathan into the deck. Either that or entirely remove Stormtide because as soon as he enters only 5 cards are usable for attack. But with Imagination, oppopponents loose, and can't gain, flying so I can just power through and attack. And I want to add Kiora crashing wave instead of her war of the spark version

I like both in either slot. It depends on what effect you want more often - ramp and cards or a creature that's super bomb. I'd lean toward aesi as the commander for ramp and cards
