Great vid. An easier way to remove the banjo bolt without fighting to keep the caliper steady is to loosen it while the old caliper is bolted up

He makes it look sooooo easy. I wish he'd come do mine. My experience with such things is that usually there's always that ONE THING that doesn't go well: a bolt will just not come off, or will shear off, or you can't get to it, or SOMETHING....... And if it wasn't for that ONE THING the job would have taken an hour instead of three or four hours.

Good Job 👍 I would have mentioned soaking all bolts in penetrating oil before you loosen them. Also aligning the screw-down piston with the brake pad detents. Solid video.

Please can you explain the bit about screw down position
@ketoninja
@ketoninja Жыл бұрын
@@graemepaterson4458 it's been a long time since I did this, but, basically there is a cross -shaped detent on top of the piston which you can turn with a large flat blade of some sort like a screwdriver, and you need to twist the piston downward to align it with some detents in the shaft that it's located. The piston does not go in and out, it comes out in a spiral. I guess that's the best way I can describe it from memory.

Fantastic and NO malarkey. Better to have the camera fixed as you did unlike many others do not in similar video. Audio was without too much noise - save for the wind chimes which was subtle

I'm here because I snapped the bleeder screw on the rear passenger caliper when doing a brake fluid flush. Now I gotta replace both the calipers. Luckily there was no fluid leaking out and I test drove the vehicle. It seems good for now, no weird feelings on the brake pedal but I'll get it sorted asap

Just press and block your brake pedal with a stick or something long enough that fits between the pedal and the driver's seat. By doing this you won't lose any brake fluid.

The reason i have to replace mine is because the rubber boot around the piston won't turn with the piston when i'm trying to push it back in. I've tried cleaning around it with brake cleaner and then trying WD-40 in hopes it will twist back with the piston. Ultimately i just ended up twisting the damn thing until the rubber boot ripped apart.
@EJM1224

Same just happened to me today. It's the weirdest thing. Passenger side had no problems. Nothing I did let the driver side caliper's boot glide freely.
@MechanicalMalarkey
@MechanicalMalarkey 4 жыл бұрын
Usually before I try to turn the caliper piston in I try to get the boot free from the piston. The boot should stay where it is in relation to the caliper while the piston spins inside it.

@@pleco101 I haven't seen the pads seize in the holders that much more frequently than other cars, I don't think. I don't think you need to get new calipers unless the old ones are leaking/seized, or the parking brake function is seized, which is the most common way these go.

When you said the parking brake lever seizes up, does that also mean that the piston is seized? Or no?
@MechanicalMalarkey
@MechanicalMalarkey 3 жыл бұрын
Most often I just see the lever seized, but regular hydraulic action seems fine. I see way too many cars where somebody just changed the rear pads and rotors but didn't replace the calipers that were also needed, because they didn't notice the seized lever and the piston went back in fine.

With the new caliper do i have to twist the piston before putting it on
@MechanicalMalarkey
@MechanicalMalarkey 2 жыл бұрын
You shouldn't have to, it should come fully pushed in. You should check that it is lined up properly though, I've gotten a few that were twisted from straight parallel, which doesn't work for putting them on the pads.

The caliper bracket has 14mm bolts and the stock calipers have 12mm bolts. Aftermarket calipers sometimes have 13mm bolts instead of 12mm.
