I just ordered the spindle and latch, is there anyway I could get a picture of how you mounted the latch. I’m not sure I ordered the one you used?
@FamilyAdventuresOverlanding

Unfortunately, I don’t have a picture of it. The latch mechanism was mounted to the swing out and the anchor was on the bumper right below it. I discovered that this was not the right way to do it as the swing out would pivot toward the rear a little bit and make the latch really hard to undo. You’re going to want to make sure the latch pulls the swing out horizontally toward the bumper/stop, not vertically like mine. This will ensure that the latch will not become to difficult to open. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching!

I don’t, I’m sorry. I can tell you that I bought the heavy duty swing out spindles and latches from Comp 4x4 in California. Everything else was 3/16” box steel in 2x6 and 2x3. I bought raw steel from a yard and made it up as I went.

I love your build! How has the swing-out held up? Has there been any issues from the swing-out length and the load weight on the swing out?
@FamilyAdventuresOverlanding
@FamilyAdventuresOverlanding 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! No issues from the length or load. Just a design flaw. I installed the latch vertically and should’ve had it grab horizontally to pull the swing out toward the truck. Instead I had it mounted vertically pulling the swing out downward toward the bumper. It would shift a little bit when driving and make the latch difficult to unlatch.

Great job! Any idea how much it helped on your departure angle?

Kyle Murray thanks! If it was just the bumper, it would be pretty decent. But the Jerry can holder stands off the swing out 13 inches. It would’ve been better if I had built the holder higher.

Thanks for the response! Still a great build that I’ll be saving for ideas if I ever get around to doing mine.

Do you by chance have the measurements and cuts available? I want to build something similar with wings that go under the cab corners, and this seems to be a great start to that project.

I don’t, sorry. I pretty much made everything up as i went along. It was my first time building at rear swing out bumper.
