@@WarriorOfEden3033 Diverter valve would work. Basically just a BOV that vents the charge pressure through a hose right back into the inlet rather than dumping to atmosphere...these days diverters are actually more common than blow off valves because it's technically a bit more efficient. Definitely shouldn't skip the intercooler if you go this route though.

I've done extensive testing on my rear mount truck. It's an 01 f150 extended cab with a forged 4.6L, ported factory P-I heads, and 6-speed mt82 swapped. The turbo is right behind the cab about 1 foot above the surface of the bed. Total of 13ft of charge piping. I'm running a 62/64/14 Hx-based hybrid that I built. Max boost pressure set to 10 psi.... Using the factory exhaust (w high flow cats) my turbo would achieve max boost at about 3000 rpm. Added Turbo blanket+heat wrap to piping: 2750 rpm Replaced 3" charge piping with 2.5": 2500 rpm Ported the exhaust manifolds: No measurable difference Ceramic-coated the manifolds and exhaust piping: maybe 50 less so 2450rpm Added "stage 1" Cams basically a tow cam with more lift with gains in low end/mid range: 2300 rpm I know that I am losing top end and peak numbers by implementing some of those changes but I can tell you they aren't noticeable. What is noticeable is the spool time. Being a manual transmission I wanted spool up to be as quick as possible; that was my number one priority. Apparently I will get phenomenal improvements by switching to a ball bearing turbo but I refuse. My oiling is already a breeze since the turbo is much higher than the oil pan. This small-turbo truck is a real blast to drive. It reminds me of what it felt like to drive my old 5.0 coyote mustang mt82. I have not dyno'd the truck since I made the changes to the setup. I dyno'd it back when my turbo was reaching max boost at 3000rpm Peak power was 479 whp @ 3800rpm 531ft lbs tq @ 3300rpm If i had to guess peak torque is now reached way into the 2000's. RPM @ Peak hp has probably not changed too much

One huge factor in rear and mid mount turbos is the turbo oil system. Which of course can be avoided buying an oil less turbo which you have to change the grease out every couple thousand miles and that grease is pricy as well, but if you use a turbo that requires oil, maybe a 300-600 dollar one, you'd have to run long oil lines, one to feed the turbo some oil, and one to drain the oil from the turbo to the block and use a scavenge pump to push the oil back up to the oil pan, and use check valves to avoid the turbo smoking on start up and little details and such. That's another con that can be avoided by buying an oil less turbo that runs over 1k, some 2k, which the cost of the turbo is a con on its own. Being as my entire turbonetics/custom pieced together fabbed kit cost me about $1600 without supporting mods like gauges, fueling, radiator and oil cooler, luckily since it's top mount, it's just gravity drained, but I have experience with low and mid mounts as well. Other than this, i agree with everything else, has ups and downs but in some situations definitely worth the ease of fab, budget and installation.
@blackpearlmedia7797
@blackpearlmedia7797 3 жыл бұрын
Great input! Definitely forgot this but oil is definitely a factor! It wasn't to hard I just have a scavenge pump and a basic oil sump cured my smoking issues

Can you actually run a stand alone oil delivery system? Ex oil pump and reservoir.
@dennisrobinson8008
@dennisrobinson8008 Жыл бұрын
you could have an oil supply in the trunk and an electric pump.
@Sonickart
@Sonickart Жыл бұрын
@@dennisrobinson8008 it's possible but not that simple, you'd need a pump that's capable of supplying pressurized oil into the top of the turbo, just feeding oil without pressure into the turbo will instantly ruin it first spool up. and of course you'd need another scavenge pump to pull it from the bottom of the turbo back into a reservoir. The fact you just tap into the cars oil system is far more convenient cause that's one less pump capable of failing, and the oil is pressurized already, which varies with rpm which is what you want, higher rpm, more pressure as the turbos spinning faster. It's perfect that way, that's why nobody does standalone oil systems. Sharing it with the cars large 5+ quart reservoir also has its benefits, cause the smaller the standalone reservoir you have, the shorter the oil change intervals for that standalone system
@dennisrobinson8008
@dennisrobinson8008 Жыл бұрын
@@Sonickart I appreciate the feedback. There is always a soluation. Someone could bundle up the solution that you described similar to how they bundle up "battery relocation kits", where you have the pump(s), the resevoir and some instrcutions, etc.

@@dennisrobinson8008 yeah that's true. But if you use a supercharger that has a clutch, it might last a little longer if you use it when needed then allow the turbo to take over. It doesn`t matter if your turbo gets hot, that's what happens to Turbo chargers anyway because there are very hot exhaust gases running through them. Your Turbo will be running much hotter than your engine bay is! This is why we use Intercoolers to cool the air that passes through the turbo charger.

This is especially a concern if you want to turbo your engine but you also want long tube headers. For me, I've been looking to get a GT350 for a while now and recently I've been interested in Kooks long tube headers for the 5.2 Voodoo. At the same time I've been looking into how to turbo the GT350 with long tubes installed. *UPDATE February 2023:* After coming across your video and doing all the digging I've been doing for a while, I was considering going for rear-mount twin turbos, plus a supercharger to take care of the lag, but now I'm looking at short-tube headers, twin turbos, and no supercharger.

A single exhaust wouldv'e been less materials/welding and less heat loss, though maybe you didn't have room for a larger diameter pipe? Have you considered wrapping the exhaust to keep heat in? And for those of us with a bit more room under there, an air-to-water intercooler under the back seat floor would reduce travel (not to mention increase the stealthiness).

Well anything is possible! But I knew little about that platform so I think your best bet is to join a few Facebook groups and ask LOTS of questions. Tuning capabilities, supporting mods like fuel injection and cooling solutions. Once you have enough info find a local fabricator to help design and build the system. And last you will need to find a tuner to tune the car. It's a long road but worth it! Now if that is to much at this point I'd say start with a good set of coilovers a nice set of wheels and some sticky tires! You will see and feel a huge difference in performance

One of the thing is with the long pipes , is when you shift. You do not have as much pressure drop inbetween . So the initial spool lag is a very small price to pay , for keeping the boost up between shifts. The rear mount allso is less harsh on your turbo as it won't get as hot. However i would still say that on a car that allready sits low.. that can be a problem. Now , depending on the car , if its say.. a 4 jugger, I would rather look for 2 small turbo Than a large one. Cyl 1 and 2 , and 2and 4 paired. The long tubes will even out the pressure waves a lot better. Than with the small turbos you can mount them higher. Many Times its cheaper to aim for a pair of smaller turbos Than a large single unit. And many Times small turbos can get a lot higher boost. Potentially you can even regain the initial spool lag , while enjoying the benefit of the less spool loss between shifts. With the 2 small turbo approach you may verry well not need the intercooler. Saves space. Allso you can crossfeed , the turbo that gets exhaust of cyl 1 and 2 , can boost cyl 3 and 4. Its far less complicated to make a manifold with proper dimensions thatway. Volumetric efficiency can and does varry between cylinders , if you flowbech a head , you will see the deviation can be up 10% or even more. This helps resolving that issue , and while you will have less peak power , you will have a better curve. From performance stand point peak values mean nothing. Power under the curve is indeed what tells the story.

To be honest I really don't care too much about turbo lag in fact I think it's kind of fun waiting for boost to hit then feeling it start to floor you into the seat, however the reason I'm watching this video is because I've had a really bold idea in my head that I have to do now which is cutting into my trunk in my Miata and making a turbo that pokes out the trunk facing forwards with two entrys leading to the front side of the trunk almost by the doors, too crazy of an idea? Cause I'm kind of obsessed with the thought now

Check out Nugget Garage. His Supra has a setup that’s unbelievable. Biggest issue people run into. Now a days there is no reason to lower compression. Especially with the tuning of these systems we have now. People using far too large an exhaust pipe diameter. People also not wrapping the system to contain thermal energy. The lag. Think of it as perfect traction control.
