Yes, Hitchcock was master of telling a story visually. He started in silent movies and felt that the fewer title cards, the better. A love story is often the "real" story being told in Hitchcock movies. The surrounding plot is what Hitchcock called the "MacGuffin." It doesn't matter what it is. It could be anything. Here, we have Thorwald and the other neighbors. In other movies, it has been various things such as "industrial diamonds" (Notorious,) the missing door key (Dial M for Murder,) Carlotta's ghost (Vertigo) and the fictitious CIA agent "George Kaplan" (North By Northwest.)

…and you’ve managed to say so much in this short video about a favourite film I thought I knew so well but now understand, thanks to your clear and entertaining explanation, just how much more there is to see and enjoy next time I watch this great movie and to appreciate even more what a truly remarkable director and storyteller Hitchcock was and the treasure trove of movies he has left for all of us. Thank you!

4:30 had you noticed the Pianist slump into his Chair in frustration while Jeffries chuckles subconsciously making a connection with his Neighbor's plight as Frustrated Artists (both appearing incapacitated in their chairs) - Pianist as a Musician with Jeffries as the Photographer

Well done. I can’t believe you were able to interpret the subtle role of the musician in the movie. I thought he was just there to rescue the suicidal woman. That was great. You have a resemblance to MacCauley Culkin by the way.

Thank you very much for this! After watching the film I couldn't figure out why was there such an emphasise on the relationship when towards the end it felt like the murder was the main point of the story. I guess there were many layers of storytelling.

Good video, it's great to see you branching out! I think it's interesting that you read Rear Window through the lens of traditional romance. Because there seems to be a crucial thematic tension at the center of the film. On one hand, it's a romance and thereby can be associated with common, mainstream sexual practices. On the other, the protagonist's constant spying through his camera can be read as a representation of deviant, voyeuristic sexuality. I mean, he's a peeping Tom. At any rate, good stuff! Your channel seems to be gaining a lot of momentum too, and it's great to see!

Rear Window without Grace Kelly?? No thanks!!
@PhilMoskowitz Жыл бұрын
Grace Kelly was perfectly cast for this role. I think as an actress she is very wooden and a bore. That's something that reflects the character. But ultimately it hurts the movie. I think that's why Hitch and the producers included Thelma Ritter's character so much in the movie.

Interesting analysis! I think their relationship will never work, they're just too different. She's not only waaay out of his league, she's also too young for him. Middle aged, grumpy old guy dates the gorgeous Grace Kelly and isn't satisfied!? Is he gay? Instead of bringing her down to his level maybe he should date the Thelma Ritter character; he seems to get along much better with her! Why eat a fine lobster dinner if you can have a baloney sandwich?

The big theme of film maker as voyeur is highlighted by an event not seen on the screen. Hitchcock, asked Grace Kelly for a favor one day. The sound stage was empty and he and Grace were alone. She walked over across the courtyard and into the apartment occupied by the character that Raymond Burr played. Hitch got behind the camera and called for action. And Grace Kelly Princes of Monaco opened her blouse and let Hitch view her naked through the lens of a still camera. And the theme of Voyeuristic fetishism was complete.
