When a writer constantly avoids using the character's name and instead uses an attribute like their role, profession, hair colour, etc, to address them instead. "The lawyer/healer/skater boy/student..." "The shorter man..." "The blond/brunette/redhead..." The trend that really irks me is using made-up terms for people with particular hair colours by adding "ette" to any existing colour - and bonus points if it's a particularly flowery or pretentious colour term. "Ravenette", for example, is an instant 'back-out' for me.

I used to do this. I thought using a character's name over and over would get too repetitive. Then I realized I'm writing from a character's perspective and naming someone else by their hair colour makes it seem like that's what they notice most about them. Which is a huge no-no for people who're anything more than strangers. Now I use their names unless I'm using something like "devil-child" to double down on annoyance or other feelings that were clearly already there.

Like, almost every instance of Starscream and Megatron existing in the same show/movie, usually ends with Megatron just bashing Starscream at some point. Fans see straight up abuse and go "oh yeah, they're totally a thing". Same with MegOp. I blame TF Prime of creating/popularizing that backstory of them being friends pre-war and fans taking it way out of hand. They can simply be friends who merely had ideological falling out, which I think was the main point of that story anyway. I think fans focus on too much Megatron's "nice-guy phase" in his "nice-guy-to-monster" character arc and neglect the second half, esp. if it's like the late-stages of the war where you know Megs has some unforgivable shit.

the other day i found a really cool concept for a fic. i started reading it, but half way through i just started skimming through everything else. every single time a character said anything remotely wrong or negative, the author would immediately assure the reader that "OBVIOUSLY that's not correct! obviously you shouldn't say that!" as if the reader is incapable of understanding nuance. not every character is going to be perfect and politically correct 100% of the time. i don't need the constant reminder that the character is being mean because THATS THE POINT! and when a character is challenged, they immediately say "oh, i'm so sorry! i now realize that i am incorrect and will never make that mistake again!" which wouldn't be bad if it weren't for Every. Single. Time. it's so hard to explain without giving you direct examples from the fic. it just felt like the author couldn't write complex characters without consistently reminding the reader about how complex the character is and how not everything they say is correct. it just felt so unrealistic. i can't explain it. i had read a few fics from that author and didn't really care for them, but this fic cemented it in me that yeah no. i'm not reading anymore because that was INFURIATING to get through. I UNDERSTAND THE CHARACTER ISNT BEING POLITICALLY CORRECT I UNDERSTAND THAT THERE ARE BETTER WAYS TO WORD WHAT THEYRE SAYING THATS THE WHOLE POINT!!!!

When this one fanfic turned a canon healthy and great dad into an abusive one because angst. The urge to turn any adult male character into an abusive shithead is really upsetting and idk how to explain why. And it’s not an interesting character study of the dad, it’s literally just there to make the character who’s already traumatized, even more traumatized. I should mention the dad is a navy guy, but he’s always shown great care and affection for his son even though he’s generally reserved and rarely speaks. They also took the fact the parents are divorced to make him out to be the villain when we don’t get that in canon. it was just really frustrating.

I have done this. The author had comments turned off. That's fine. I don't care about that. But on the other hand, they also had a lot of excessively strong language for anyone who thinks a wall of text is a bad way to present a story in the author's note. Sure, it's your fic, you can format it anyway you like. But why do you have to categorize everyone who would like spacing so... So _evil_ or antagonistic? something similar happened to me. I was reading an fanfic where the main character was a model: beautiful, rich, famous and the basic power fantasy. but with a dark past. I stuck around because I can rarely find stories about a pairing like this that aren't of bad quality, and this story was at least paragraphed and spell-checked, so despite the way I rolled my eyes at the MC sometimes, I was at least following the story, excited for the time when the couple would start to show their chemistry. except they didn't. because not only was the MC blessed with the life you would only dream of, they were also E D G Y because of their tragic backstory, and so their personality was hot garbage. the love interest was like a puppy following them around, absolutely infatuated with them. the main character was so pessimistic and awful to everyone that tried to help them, I grew to HATE them, just generally. there was zero romantic chemistry and I was just sat there like what is the motivation for them being together? it got to the point where I started to wonder why the love interest even LIKED the MC. there were several instances of the love interest trying to give a compliment or make a joke or lighten the AWFUL GLOOMY MOOD that the MC had set in some way, or try to make the date they were going on- that he had stumbled over himself and shyly convinced them to be interested in- somewhat nicer, they would get all snarky and rude. they shut him down EVERY TIME. there was no mutual banter, all the flirting felt stilted, the MC was this untouchable rose with thorns, and even when they opened up to the love interest, it felt less like "I'm sharing these struggles with you because I trust you" and more like "it's the trauma olympics".

I totally agree. I've stopped so many romcoms 70% of the way through if the misunderstanding is too ridiculous. It can be done well though. I realized at the most recent episode that the plot of House of the Dragon is based off of a misunderstanding that can be cleared by a conversation. The only difference is that there were very complex character reasons why the two characters can barely stand to be in the same room together. In HOTD it works as well because one person knows The Truth and believes that the other person is willfully lying when actually the other person is just dealing with incomplete information and has no idea.

My pet peeve is the improper use of homophones - "to/too/two" and "their/they're/there" are common enough that I can usually ignore them unless it's constant, but for SOME reason a huge culprit of late has been "peek/peak," and EVERY TIME it takes me completely out of the story. "Allowed/aloud," "baited/bated," "board/bored," "past/passed," "brake/break," "sense/since"....I just cannot. I can usually tell if it's an ESL issue, which of course deserves more grace for obvious reasons, but if it's consistent enough in any scenario it just irks me to the point of clicking away. As an ESL teacher, the "they're/their" for example is actually a mistake made more by natives than ESL writers. It's because ESL kids learn "they are" a looooong time before they learn "their". So they almost never get it confused (they confuse other things, but not that one in particular) Another explanation is that ESL learning is barely phonetic. They learn first how to read and write it, but not how to pronounce it. They learn how sentences look like, not how they sound like. If the author has learnt English at least partially in a formal classroom, then these are not the mistakes they'll make. Their mistakes look more like mixing tenses and adding/taking out the -s at the end of verbs.

When grown ass men act like 14 yo teenage girls. I had one making me run away, like I never ran that fast in my real life. ABO au, modern setting, one character is a lawyer, he's the alpha and was said to be 'reclusive and very respectful of Omegas', so much most of them being 'abused omegas' actually felt super comfortable with him being in the room. Here come other character, the Omega. He comes in, and he's in heat. In a room full of OMEGAS, who takes care of him when there are professionals in here ? That's right... The Alpha. Guess what happens next ? He take the omega home to 'take care of him and bring the deadly heat down', Omega is clearly out of their mind and very much not in any control of their mind (urgh), so the Alpha conceeds his plead and fucks him out of his heat and BITES HIM. Never talked to each other, definitly not in their right minds, and THIS IS A CHARACTER WE WERE TOLD WAS NOT LIKE THE OTHERS. The day after, they call each other 'My Alpha' and 'My Omega'. THEY ARE 40 YEARS OLD MEN and the Omega was actually like a wailing 8 years old and completely dependant on his 'caretaker' who very much did take advantage of him but aaaah, no that's romantic. No it's not and NOBODY'S SANE EITHER. This happened in the span of 3 chapters of 1000 words each. Talk about escalating quickly.

Yeah, I get that. The only exception to that is a RWBY/Fallout crossover fic I read (I think it's called Dust in the Wind?). In that fic, they had the songs actually play in the universe, either from the protagonist's radio or in a club. It also helps that the songs were always from the canon RWBY show. So there isn't a tonal or continuity whiplash like some fics or even movies do (like the animated Peter Pan sequel or Treasure Planet)

The fact it's from their perspective too... Given the lack of conflict that sounds like the entire fanfic was just about how much the MC is better than everyone else and that's not a good sign. It's especially annoying because person vs self conflicts are actually a really good way to have an otherwise capable character struggle!

@Ravenbloom918 Like the way i can imagine that fic could been salvaged is that the two then end up fleeing ponyville and end up stumbling upon someone that doesn't hate them on the spot. they ask what's happening to them, in which they explained that everyone they knew, including friends and family started hating them, while that other character looks like they're putting the dots together, then like Dash pop to further bully them, and then that new character helps them by cutting an invisible string above her. Dash snaps out of it and when told about the vitriol that she was throwing at the two, she is shocked and anguished that she would do that to them, but then she deeply and Genuinely apologizes to both Pinkie and Shy as she is quickly calmed down about it. There that character explains that there been an outbreak of invisible beings that been feeding hate onto ponies minds. And there they start planning how to stop those things, in fact here have Celestia and Luna be the ones they've been ordered by to investigate and soon join them as well. (Celestia and Luna are proactive)

the "popular ≠ good" is COMPLETELY correct! I once read a fic that was the 4th most popular fic in the fandom, with loads of my ships and tags that I liked, and even had a good amount of words, so I thought I would love it turns out, I didn't, and instead closed it on chapter 1 because the writing style really irked me, and I actually went back to reread the first chapter to find out exactly why now I finally know that it was because a) it was written in present tense, which is fine for me, but not the most comfortable; and more so b) because there were terrible grammar mistakes EVERYWHERE, like despite being mostly in present tense, every few paragraphs there would be a sentence or clause in PAST TENSE instead, and some sentences aren't even completely coherent, I can just tell from reading it that the author didn't bother to reread or edit the chapter even once I can forgive this in texts or online comments, or even in crackfics, but this clearly wasn't one, so it's just so annoying to me personally like this is an actual excerpt: "She also notices that the raft of paper she currently standing on is also slowly moving forward like the rest of the paper in this place. There also Huh... weird." I'm pretty sure this was written by someone younger, because the tone of the omniscient third-person narration was really informal in places where it shouldn't be, as if it was a person casually talking to you instead of a proper, formal story, which is what it's trying to be, by the way some literary devices and things are used sorry for the long rant, I just really dislike the writing style of that fic, and thank you for your time if you actually read the whole thing lol

In this fic, sure, it involved time travel, but it had a consistent story line that didn't repeat itself. Then the final fight happened and it just refused to end all of a sudden. That came out of nowhere. The villain is beaten, but he fuses with another monster and they combine their powers. The villain is beaten again, but then he turns back time and restores himself to full power. The villain is beaten again and captured, but another random villain shows up and immediately releases him again. Every single one of these fight scenes would have been sufficient as a normal final battle. Every time one of them ended and the villain was beaten or almost beaten, it felt like the big climax. But then it turned out to be a fake-out and all the efforts the heroes just went through, including sacrifices and people dieing, turned out to be for nothing and the fight started practically started from square one, with the villain once more at the height of his power and the good guys more exhausted than ever. It just started feeling like all efforts the heroes put into the fight were for nothing, since the villain would revive again anyway and that made their actions look pointless after a while. I was actually surprised when the fight did finally end.

as an amateur writer, there was one time where i had a character trying to hold a conversation and searching for the right words but failing. every time he flubbed a word, didn't know how to respond, or anything of the sort, he would sigh. i didn't know what else to make him do that would sell his out-of-his-depth-ness without breaking the flow of the conversation too much. after a while, i started to specifically call attention to it for comedy's sake. i even started counting how many times he had sighed in that conversation alone. (one time, he hit thirty-eight sighs in five minutes!) people loved it. it's okay to not know what other word to use. you don't have to use a thesaurus for every new word. it's FINE to use "said" and other bland words when you don't know what else to do, and if there is one specific action that happens over and over, you can hang a lampshade on it and make it work! you just have to know what you're doing.

Yes! I just spoke about the opposite of this, where an American author seems to forget they’re writing a British character in Britain. It’s always a good idea to, if you’re not sure what the differences are in dialect or terminology, to google. Some very important ones I’ve noticed American authors doing that makes every non American reader die of cringe is the following: 1.) using month/date/year, eg “April 8th”. The rest of the entire English speaking world and beyond uses “the 8th of April” 2.) become familiar with what the terms are for different years of education. This might not sound like a big deal if you aren’t writing a high school setting, but for stuff like flashbacks… ehhhhhh it really wrecks the immersion. I’m from South Africa, where the terms we use for school years actually makes sense, but in Britain they use the stupidest system possible. Learn what “sixth form” is (lord knows I haven’t), learn that it’s “year four” not “sixth grade”, or whatever the conversion is. And please. Anime fandoms. Please. Don’t. Say. “Freshman year”. Japan has never heard of that phrase and never will. Probably. Also, “college” is not a common concept in the rest of the world. Certainly in my country, “university” or “technical school” is always the higher education institution. It’s not “in my college days…”, try a phrase like “uni” or “varsity” 3.) if you’re in Scotland, say Scotland, not the UK. Same goes for other constituent countries. Scots are still kinda sore about that. This is a very minor one, it’s not one I really care about personally 4.) While you don’t necessarily have to use British standard English and spellings, please try to stick to *occasional* common British phrases in dialogue especially… unless of course your character is not British. Stuff like “alright” instead of “okay”, etc 5.) don’t go overboard though please that’s equally cringe 6.) I’m begging the anime fandom not to type “(name)-kun” when writing in English I’m actually begging I’m on my knees on the floor I’m begging y- 7.) ENGLISH PEOPLE DONT HAVE WALMART. THEY DONT, HAVE, WALMART IN UK. NO WALMART IN UK. PLEASE. NO WAMART. NO CHILLIS. For me it was a wonderful BOTW Fic (Can't remember the name) where all 5 champions where in the shrine of Resurrection. It was great! Had them surviving on the Plateau, engaging combat, slow burn romance, etc. It was wonderful! Then they got off the starting area aaaand... 2 OC's who were each effortlessly more competent/powerful than all 5 combined. Like they 'cleared the path' and the main characters were just seeing dead lynels and golden enemies and My disbelief crashed through the floor into the basement. Why even wait for the champions when tweedle dee and tweedle two could each have 1v1'd Gannon twice over? Eventually I came back to it a few months later and the chapters had been completely re-written to eliminate the OC's and became awesome again. So A rare case of dropped and picked up again.

MPREG IS THE WORST. Ignoring that it's a male getting pregnant (which could be reasonable if they made it reasonable), most of the time it's just that person pregnant and *poof*, a baby nine months later, without any problems, no changes in the character's body (that would be needed for a pregnancy), the character's personality, maturity and responsibility for example, didn't change a bit, nothing. Not a fanfic, but once I was reading a manwha that had it. After the first child was born, the MC began to be called mommy for the rest of it.

I actually got a Russian national to help me out with Russian dialogue for a previous fic because I like getting details right. The fact that some writers don’t care about that sort of fidelity just bothers me sometimes.

My reasoning for dropping a fic? Boredom. Sheer, absolute boredom! Quotes aside, yeah my brain shuts off and I feel like doing something else when I read. Hell, I even get inspired and write something. Also the one with the MC screaming constantly (5:06) is hilarious to imagine, I gotta find that so I can experience that myself!

It started off as a regular William Afton fic, but then the author started acting like...I don't know how to explain it. They acted like William Afton was real, that they spoke to him in the real world but only they could see him. That he was aware that he was in a fanfic and he "wrote" some chapters too. Its just...what the fuck.

One time I found a fic that played out just like an episode of a show I used to be obsessed with. It was incredibly close to the canon, the characters acted very much like their original selves, and the storyline was unique and fun. It was truly glorious. Then, of course, the fan favorite character appeared, and that STUPID HEADCANON where he acts like a CAT was happening and he caught a fish with his bare hands which he WOULD NOT EVER DO IN CANON and I was SO MAD that I ran away and never came back

Overkill angst. Read a fic where everything was horrible, they were depressed, ptsd, sh, loner, loser, no friends, abusive parents, and horrible foster parents. It was. It was a lot. I finished it and they ran away with their childhood bestie (ended up getting with him) and gained BETTER foster parents but it was just horrible the angst and the writing bc they just took it all away in like one scene. (The mc was also made into like an uwu soft boi. I can't believe I typed that but it is the correct description of it).

I once found an actual physical comic book ("Real Me" by Sohvitar) in the library, that was only 100 pages long and had like two panels per page. The whole book consists of bad things happening to the main character, and none of it ever gets resolved. It started out with the main character going to school, simping for her teacher and finding out her childhood friend has died. All her friends then leave her for being sad or something (it's been a few years since I read this so I don't remember the exact order of events) and she goes home to her dad who's talking about his new girlfriend. At this point the book turns into angst about her dead mom. The next day the main character skips school, gets heartbroken over a weird guy she saw 2 seconds ago and gets invited to a bar by another weird guy who tries to SA her in the bathroom. She gets away and tries to tell her dad but he's drunk. Next morning she goes back to school, but when she gets home her dad introduces her to his new girlfriend who's allergic to cats and says they gave away her cat while she was at school. She runs away crying. That's where the book ends. The book has no real plot, nor does it have the lenght to handle any of its heavy topics in a meaningful way. It would've been okay if they'd chosen one or two of the sad things to deal with, but instead it just feels like every middleschooler's second OC's backstory

Yeah, excessive angst is honestly kind of boring. Okay, bad things are happening to the protagonist, and they’re miserable. So? “And then they were sad” is not enough to be a story. For me, angst is like a condiment. It can enhance the flavor if used in moderation, but I don’t want to eat an entire plate of it.

when they change the sexuality or gender of a character. maybe in a universe where it’s gender bent is fine, but in a normal fic it’s basically just changing the character for the writers sake. It’s annoying.

One very specific fic ive dropped was an ATLA fanfic. For some god forsaken reason they kept making Katara say "oh Tui and La" as an expression for oh my god. mind you this is never used in the entire series. It would have been fine if it was once and i could have ignored it if it was twice but she kept saying it, over and over. Then she used it twice in the same paragraph and i was so mad i had to stop

@@cawareyoudoin7379 I agree, but only if it’s like one Oc that’s basically a main character in the story (and their relatives). Those are cool, but good ones are pretty rare. In the first comment, I was mainly referring to fanfics that would mostly have the main cast of characters, but suddenly interrupted by random self inserts of the author and their friends that pop up and don’t bring anything to the plot aside from banter and sad backstories.

Saw part of a long-ass essay about "fixing the worldbuilding and lore of RWBY" and he just.... made up an entirely different universe with completely new names, factions, and history. It's like saying you wanna "fix" the lore of Harry Potter and the end result was Cyberpunk 2077

But in the end it’s still just fanfic, it doesn’t erase the Og and it doesn’t reflect how the creator truly wanted their story to go, even if it ends up bad.

I’m a “x reader” fic reader and writer, and while I put up with a LOT in fics, but sometimes I have to draw the line. Characters being ooc is a major red flag for me, but sometimes I’m desperate enough for content I’ll read it, but sometimes it’s so bad I cringe and physically can’t read more. Which has given me the downside of being paranoid my characters aren’t accurate ENOUGH to the point I stop writing. Another one is author/oc inserts. I don’t mind if they’re a background character who shows up every few chapters, but I HATE when authors write an oc and immediately Yn and then are best friends. Like I don’t know them or you! Stop projecting this onto me! I remember I’ve only dropped a fic the first chapter in once, and that was because the author said it was “x reader” but it was just their oc. I don’t mean “preset background and personality”, I can live with that. No, this fic had them have a dark backstory, a description, a personality , and a name, the author even said it was they’re oc and when people called them out for tagging it “x reader” and having that in the title not “x oc” they said “the reader is the oc, so it’s basically x reader” I also hate when the plots go off the rails in the worst way possible. Like slice of life helping a character heal from trauma to, “now we both kill people!” In the span of two chapters. Sorry for going off, I’m just very picky with my x reader fics after I’ve spent a day reading one hoping it would get better and giving it a chance only for it to be discontinued so many times, I have to have these standards

I personally do not care for "x reader" fics in the slightest. But I feel like accurate characterisation would the most important part of that genre. You want to romance *this* character, not just some random dude with their name.

I read a fic once that had an entire side plot of ocs. One of the canon main characters was apparently friends with them and would randomly meet up with them to just like- cry about a bunch of stuff (mainly the main ship between him and another main character)?? Which was entirely out of character for him. It was so annoying but i forced myself to read it because of how tiny the fandom was.

You're not alone on that paranoia of ooc characters 😭😭 I'm making a fic and it includes changing the background of one of the characters. Because of this shift of background, I'm afraid I made them far from who they are from canon (given that a characters background influences who they are) Even though that shift was necessary for their character arcs. Mischaracterization is my biggest fear. I hope you'll come back in writhing though! Whatever it is you have in mind it's worth telling :D

I once tried to read my mom's longest Harry Potter fanfiction, I had to back out when Snarry became obvious. Like at least give me a warning that 16 year old Harry is gonna date our movie aged Snape. I'm never reading anything by my mom again, also because she's my mom and just a bad writer who's super overconfident (she has such a Wattpad writing style, like she's actually a wiring beginner and not having been writing for over a decade).

i noped out of a fic once because an author used the word "shuttered" too many times instead of "shuddered" or "stuttered" they used it so much i felt like i was being gaslighted into thinking it was an actual word that worked in the context. i looked it up because i was so frustrated. the only thing you can "shutter" is a window. a person cannot shutter in arousal.
