I don't understand why some individuals are against diagnostics. I'm the guy who had that extremely long comment about the MINI in another video. The shop building my MINI (GermanTech Motorsports in Louisville, KY) performs a diagnosis on my car every time I bring my car in. Whether for an upgrade or if my car is broken... It's always done. I encourage it to be done. I appreciate the fact that GermanTech is so thorough. I can't put into words just how awesome GermanTech is. I just got an email from them explaining that they are putting the upgraded/rebuilt head on this week and that the tuning process should start next week. My R55 has been in the shop since February. That's almost 6 months. Since then, GermanTech has kept me up to date on everything. They even let me buy my own performance parts if they believe I can get a better deal. Building a '10 MINI Clubman S is not an easy thing to do. I am literally 1 of maybe 2 or 3 other individuals who is driving a tricked out MINI in Louisville. I am always the only fast MINI whenever I take it out. Heck, I'm always the only MINI. When I decided to build a MINI, I thought I was never going to find a shop to help me with the build. GermanTech saved me. They are letting me do what nobody does. The reason nobody does it is because it's not ideal. Building a MINI is not easy. There's a lot of back and forth from my house to the shop. Every 3 steps forward is met with 1 step back. GermanTech has been there with me through every step. I damn near worship their technicians for what they are able to do. Their job is not easy, and I praise them for their dedication to their craft. During my last visit to their shop, they were in the middle of swapping an S65 from an '07 E93 M3 into a Z3 M Coupe (the infamous Clown Shoe)! I see them doing these types of builds, and it just blows my mind. It's no wonder that enthusiasts from all over bring their rides to GermanTech. Euro shops have a reputation for being "snooty". They aren't like that. Although I've spent a ton of money with them, I am super low on their totem pole. Every time I go there, though, they treat me like I'm the guy with the Z3 M Coupe. They buy me lunch if I gotta wait. They've let me borrow their shop van for a few days FOR FREE when my MINI was taking a bit longer than expected. I truly wish that all auto/performance shops were as good as GermanTech. If they were, then technicians would be paid what they are worth, and more people would actually trust the shops working on their cars.

I agree with paying for diagnostics, but it should come off the repair bill at the shops expense. In other words, pay me for diagnostics, and if we perform the work here, it will get deducted from the bill. That way you can call it “free” to the customer.
@Collindraker Жыл бұрын
I disagree. It’s not a free service to perform. You have to be paid for the time you spend. Just because you decide to do the repairs, does not mean the diagnosis should be waved. Especially if it was a difficult problem to find. Doctors don’t wave the x-ray fee if you decide to do surgery. It’s your car and your problem when it’s broke. You are taking it to the shop to be diagnosed and repaired. Expect to pay for that time.
@thomasstogner4715 Жыл бұрын
@@Collindraker you’re thinking as a mechanic, not as a customer. Customers will gladly pay the diagnostics fee if you call it “free”. Add the diagnostics fee to the bill as an hourly charge if you so desire.
@Collindraker Жыл бұрын
@@thomasstogner4715 that’s being dishonest and you are manipulating the price in the shops favor. You would rather do business with a shop that hides and charges extra fees in a repair just cuz? I would much rather be honest and charge for diag. Also, customers don’t always fix their cars after diagnosis. So how would we be compensated for diag at that point? Say a problem took 2 hours to diag. We quote you the job and add $300 into the “repair” cost to be compensated for the diag and we don’t disclose this with the customer. Now say the customer calls another shop to get a price comparison for the same repair, that shops is $300 cheaper. What makes you think the customer is going to not take that car to the cheaper shop for repair and get a free diagnostic. I’m a customer and a technician. I can think on both sides. It’s not hard to be honest and ensure the customer understands that’s your time is not free.
@thomasstogner4715 Жыл бұрын
@@Collindraker it’s not a perfect solution. You posed the main problem as customers don’t want to pay diagnostic fees and it’s a battle. I would suggest saying “we have a mandatory diagnostic fee of x amount, and if you choose to get it repaired here, it will get deducted off your bill”. This way if the customer leaves and gets it repaired elsewhere, you are still paid for your time. Whether the shop wants to increase the prices in the repair to reflect this or not would be up to the shop, of course.

It’s easy.

He clearly hates removing a dash and if you have to remove a dash then yes charge but if all it takes is you to lift it and maybe remove a tire and clearly see what’s wrong should be free
@Collindraker Жыл бұрын
I disagree. If all you get at a restaurant is soda. Should it be free? Should you not even tip the waitress? They spent their time and knowledge to get that soda for you, and you did drink it! If I have to rack a car, I’m getting paid for it. Also, I love ripping dashes out of cars. It’s a fun challenge.

I'm going to say why it shouldnt be free. If it were that simple for anyone to just look at something and say what's wrong with it why does that person bring it to a shop? Therein lies why it shouldnt be free.

If it's so easy to diagnose a car that you can clearly do it why dont you diagnose the car before you bring it to the shop and pay for the repair and when you're wrong you can only be mad at yourself because you diagnosed it and because that diagnosis was free you'll understand the value of diagnostics.

Google should be able to fix that car problem for you ☺️.. you don't need an expert technician to diagnose that symptom for you. Google will give you the top 3 repairs for said issue.. just pull out your wallet or purse. Buy some ammo for the parts cannon that you're about ready to have the cheapest garage in your area to fire at your vehicle and when it's still having the same problem after that.. You can then do what you should have done first... take it to a reputable mechanic, complain about that last garage and all the money wasted that never fixed the problem in the first try. Because it was those guys who put all those expensive parts on ye car.. pay the the real technicians to diagnose it correctly and get it fixed right 👍.. that was probably just a broken wire to be repaired.. cheaper than any part Google or KZbin home gamers told you to purchase an strap on with out the desired results. If you start with the second reputable shop your car gets fixed correctly and your soooo much happier now 😁. Without wasting your hard earned money to diagnose stuff on your own.. with the help of KZbin of course.. albeit some videos are awesome and very helpful 😊
