I am of a similar mind, I am looking to move to cambodia after 5 years of caring for my mother.. I want a bigger life than what I have now.. to explore, to meet new people.. I love to travel and to be so close to so many amazing places. The cost is the largest issue.. and I do understand the downsides.. for me the heat is an issue.. however I have lived in warmer areas before.. mosquitos.. but I feel that the upsides are much much more than the downsides...I watch the you tube channel For Riel to keep me informed, and others to stay focussed.. hope to see you there..
@cambodiyeah1 Жыл бұрын
The biggest cost is just getting there and getting set up. After that it's really cheap. The humidity is tough for me, but I know I'll adjust. For Riel is an excellent channel. Out of all of us who have channels about Cambodia, I think they're the most on top of it!

@@cambodiyeah1 The humidity is going to be an issue, I lived in Coober Pedy for 5 years.. extremely hot..very dry..so... but as you mentioned.. I will adjust.. I have budgeted for a small moto.. an apartment at under 200 US and food etc.. dont know if I want to teach, but will see... keep posting.

You need to give Cambodia a chance this time. If I move to Cambodia, I would time it around the big holidays ( Khmer New Year, Bun Om Touk/ water festival or Independence) so you can experience the soul of the Khmer people. I think June is not the best time to re-experience Cambodia again..
@cambodiyeah1 Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't want to move during the holidays because it would be difficult to get an apartment and all the things I'll need. I would prefer to move during the rainy season, but I'm bound by my current lease. I'll definitely be enjoying the holidays once I'm there.

I live in southern Ontario, Canada. I spent four months in northern Thailand one trip. And on a second trip I spent two months in Siem Reap, Cambodian. (followed by four days in Bangkok). Make sure your vaccinations are up to date, and get all your tropical vaccinations… like Japanese Encephalitis for example. If you want to save a lot of money….get your shots at the Pasteur institute in Phnom Penh. Way, way cheaper than in the U.S. and Canada. I’ll be flying back to Cambodia in 2024 to live there for the rest of my life. Just turned 72…..so I don’t want to wait much longer. Namo Buddhaya……🙏🏼 ☸️ 🌴 🌴 🌴 🇰🇭

I'm looking at Settling in Siem Reap too. One thing that did put me off, and this could have just been dumb luck, but every expat I met smoked almost constantly. I'm wondering if some didn't smoke and took up smoking just because its so cheap. Did you have a similar experience with that?

WOW - - - I totally agree with the culture 'discomfort' here in the US ! -- The people in Cambodia have Karma that is very respectful friendly and welcoming. I too must decide if it's a move I want to make and much for the same reasons basically much easier survival. I'm older and have $1500/mo. SS which is VERY poorly suited for the US !?! -- SR and the Philippines are both being considered. They have similar yet different cultures with Catholicism being dominant. Conservative friendly & also welcoming. They have cheap and expensive areas too. Some where you can survive quite comfortably on about $800/mo. (like Dave talks about in SR) an hour or so outside Manila. Even cheaper in the more remote areas if desired. -- I will be deciding soon - but some considerations are not yet known concerning my health. -- Hopefully I will end up somewhere for the adventure you talked about even the city & local food right there will be fun. Meeting expats from all over the world and making friends with the locals. U - Tubers you mentioned also. I've been in contact with more people in the Philippines than SR but on different islands. --- You are my newest ! --- Cambodia has touched my soul like nowhere else to this point. --- All the best !

Whatever you decide, I hope it works out well! Yeah, $1500 is nowhere near enough for the U.S. but you'll have money left over in Cambodia.

Well, I say you moved to the right country after listening to all your reasons because Cambodia has a lot of to offer. A lot less population than the neighboring countries. People are very nice, slow pace, not greedy and the list goes on. Cambodia is rich in history and culture. As for the cost of living, you be able to live comfortable life with your retirement income and the weather can’t go wrong, cus when you get older, the warmer the better for your mobility. Anyways, good luck and you will like it.

Not aiming at this at you, it applies to 100s of travel videos I watch per year. But honestly I would never ever dream of even commenting on the attitude and culture of a people (in contrast to America) prior to reaching a C1 level in their language. I mean, isn't it ignorance in bliss when you are somewhere and have no idea what's actually going on? The subtle resentment from people doesn't require only understanding 100% everything they say perfectly, but doing so with so little cognitive burden that you can begin to pick out a word that was stressed just a little to long, etc., to find hidden resentment or whatever. If I ever become a travel blogger, I'll just be straight: I'm in the comforting bubble of not knowing just yet and being spared from the drama possibly only for that reason. (To be clear, I'm very critical of the US. I just have no ability to truly compare another country, as much as I've traveled.)
@cambodiyeah1 Жыл бұрын
You have valid points. I'd just venture that one needn't have any fluency in any language to see how people are treated. Of course, some generalizing is happening, however, there's also an overall baseline prevalent social culture. In Cambodia, that culture is far less snarky, confrontational, and entitled than the US. However, it's also avoidant of being direct when needed. There's ups and downs (or just differences) for all cultures, and I think it's ok to speak of one's experiences with them without having any expertise. That said, I'll definitely agree that the more one understands the language, the more nuance they'll perceive.

There are an awful lot of travel vloggers on KZbin. Whether you can make a living doing that is another question altogether. I don't think it's as easy as 'So many people are doing it, I should be able to do it too.' It seems to be a somewhat oversaturated marketplace.
