There are some ppl who think they have to do schooling at home and they find out it’s not they may decide to homeschool their kids!!! I personally don’t think kids who are abused should be homeschooled as the abuse would be worse!!! We are 2 working parents and my stepdad is travelling with us as he works from home so he bought his work with us so he can help us with childcare/schooling while we travel school!!!

Yes… they might change their mind if they know what homeschooling actually is! That’s a great set up… work on the road and have some extra help with the kids ❤️

You packed a lot of wisdom into this video! We sent ours this year and there have definitely been pros and cons and still trying to determine what route to take next year. Thank you for sharing your thoughts! This was good ❤

So glad it was helpful. It is a tough decision because everyone’s children and life circumstances are different… even year to year!

Very helpful video. I don’t have anything to add to your list. It was very thoughtful. What I noticed you didn’t say is if your kids don’t want to a refuse to cooperate. I guess that would be another video. One that discussed unique challenges to help and encourage those who want/ need to push through. Some mothers don’t have a great relationship with their kids but I believe this would help. Though it may get worse before it gets better.

Oh... you are so right! I know that is a reason lots of parents don't think they should homeschool. My relationship with one of my children has always been such a challenge and I was so worried about homeschooling her. However, even though it's still hard, our relationship is much better than before we started homeschooling. Thank you for that thought!

That's an important point. A child's refusal to cooperate or a child that has been influenced against homeschooling may be hard to convince.

Totally agree. Some resistance is normal, but sometimes there is a lot of resistance and that can make it very hard to be productive as homeschoolers.

I like these videos you're putting out. These videos would have helped when I first started homeschooling. Even though I been homeschooling for 6 years I am watching them like I'm new to homeschooling.

Thank you for the encouragement and for watching them! I’m a bit like you. I still watch videos like this just because I’m always curious to see what other homeschoolers say. I also appreciated videos like this when I first got started ❤️

I'm a Christian and I want something that has bible class and I was initially l was leaning toward Easy Peasy but after seeing your Miacadamy review I am now leaning towards that one instead. Which one do you recommended to start off for a 1st grader with autism and a 4th grader? I also seen IXL is possibly good and Time4learning for autism students, I'm trying to figure out what will work out best for us.

Out of all that you mentioned, we have only ever used Miacademy and IXL. That and only 1 of my children tried IXL as a supplemental item and she really didn’t like it (and she is my easy going child). IXL does not really teach the subjects… it’s more of a review of what you know. That being said, there are people who love all of those programs. I think Miacademy could be ok for a 4th grader, but I would really hesitate personally to do an all online curriculum with a 1st grader (with or without autism). We personally prefer off line curriculums for the most part with a bit of online as supplements. My autistic son especially struggles to stay on task when he gets online (I was unable to do anything with him online for a very long time and he still needs a lot of supervision whenever he is on a computer right now). In the end, I can only tell you experiences we had with curriculum, but only you know your children and family. Doing some trial periods of what you are considering is always a good idea too.

@CalmintheChaosHomeschool Thank you so much for that feedback! It really helps more than you know. I think I'm going to try and do Miacadamy for both just because my son likes to do everything his big sister does and will follow through if he sees her doing it, also he loves being on his tablet so I don't think screen time will be in issue since they already use iPads at their current public school and I plan to use Easy Peasy as my offline curriculum for him if that fails lol Thank you again, and God bless you and your family 💕

@@belarroyo3017 sounds like a great combo. Always good to have a backup. And combining curriculum can really make things more interesting (ie doing some from one and some from another). So it sounds like a good plan :)

I've got a question for mommies. I've got an 11 year-old and 17 year-old who are both Autistic and have ADHD. I pulled them for several reasons, but the final straw was they each lost two grade levels from the beginning to the end of the year according to their state tests. They have both already been held back twice. My 17 year-old has the mentality of an 11 year-old hascmath and reading levels that hover at 5th grade and don't seem to budge. Their capacity for sitting still is limited and I have been struggling with their attention spans and comprehension. My 11 year-old is progressing, but my 17 year-old is still struggling deeply. My question is how many hours per day should I be having them work without overwhelming them? I'm afraid I'm not doing enough, but they overwhelm easily and panic if I go too far. I'm feeling like I'm failing and I'm pretty worried.

I can only answer this based on my own experience with my children with ADHD and/or autism and what I have found for them. I have one child who struggles significantly and is consistently many grades behind in reading comprehension levels (and math). She is definitely not improving a whole years worth each year (maybe a few months worth every year?). All I can really do with that is to keep trying from different angles. I KNOW that what I am doing at home is challenging her more academically than she would be challenge in public school, so that keeps me going. I know this because, I can push her a bit more than a teacher could. (Even though I do doubt myself at times...) I just keep trying to work on the skills that she needs at her level over and over again. It's been very, very slow progress, but there has been progress. As for hours a day, I don't think that anyone else can answer that question for you. Only you can figure out what each of your children can handle (and there really is no point pushing beyond that point). Personally, I usually pick out all the things I would LIKE to do with my kids that school year and then I cut it in 1/2... That's usually about how much they can actually handle. What they can handle to me means, on a good day, they can finish all their work in around 3-4 hours (2 hours of that is "group work" and I am reading to them and we are discussing, watching KZbin videos, etc... not heavy work for them). Of course, we get the bad days that take them just about all day to finish or they don't finish... This is what works for us. If I try to do more than this, we have too many bad days, and I know I have to "back off". To me that means I look at their work load and start cutting the things with the least priority. If you are on the struggle bus right now, I would suggest you back up to "bare essentials" and just try to have positive days with that. Once those are mostly positive, you can slowly add in an item at a time. The kids let you know when "breaking point" is pretty soon and then you know how hard to push (less than breaking point). That's really all you can do. Some of my kids are more capable than others when it comes to amount of work before things go bad. I hope this is helpful! I talk a bit about my struggles with another child and work load in his video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2Gmgah9oJyCqJo

Thank you so much. It feels like everything we do is so incremental, but their capacity is so limited. I desperately want to do a good job for them. The schools here have consistently failed so severely and consistently, there is no way I could send them back. The last school they attended was supposed to be the best of the best for kids with special needs. It instead ended up being a catch all for kids who had been expelled throughout the districts for violent behaviors. There was a riot, parents broke windows and vandalized the school, students planned attacks on teachers through social media and carried them out. It was so violent that I just pulled them out. It was a madhouse. Staff quit by the droves. The kids are trying to recover from that as well. I think that so much of the focus was on trying to mitigate the constant crisis, there was no time for education. I've only been able to get an hour or two tops of active work time out of them, but we watch videos, read, practice ASL and have art aside from school time and that takes several hours per day. Do those things count?

Oh my goodness! That sounds horrid! So, you can also be 100% confident in the fact that you are doing way better for your children then the alternative. Your kids (and you) have been through a lot! I don’t know when you pulled them, but that would definitely take some time to get over all that happened in that school setting. So give you and the kids some grace for that! Otherwise, it sounds like you are doing great. 1-2 hours of active work with reading and KZbin and ASL on the side definitely all count! To me it sounds like you are doing exactly what you should be doing. Trying your best to educate your kids and realizing when they put up too much resistance that you need to back off a bit. As far as your oldest child, I don’t know what he or she wants to do in the future, but no one ever said that one most graduate at any specific age. You can homeschool them for as long as you both want to. I know that at some point, you will want to be done, but really, there is no hard and fast rule that says they have to be done at 18 (or 19). All you can do is do your very best to prepare them as best you can for whatever their future may hold and homeschooling gives you a lot of flexibility in what that looks like as far as what you both work on. I think you are doing great and the fact that you are worrying about it tells me that you are probably the best person out there to be educating your children! ❤️
