The training field is also named Buffalo Soldier field, Dedicated to the Buffalo Soldiers who trained cadets in horsemanship and how to fight on horse back. False... The regulars (professionals) members of the 10th infantry got tremendous credit in taking San Juan Hill. It just so happens that the volunteers (also called the rough riders) share in that credit because they also assisted in taking San Juan Hill. The rough riders took Kettle Hill first which was providing San Juan Hill with fire cover and support. Then once the rough riders took Kettle Hill they assisted in taking San Juan Hill by taking the right side. The 10th infantry took the left side of the charge.

Mister Shawn There is a good movie named “Glory” about a black civil war regiment. There is also a movie titled, “Buffalo Soldiers” about black soldiers in the Indian Wars. In January 2020 the first US an navy carrier not named after a US President was named after Doris Miller a black Navy Cross recipient. There was a black soldier that was a recipient of the Medal of Honor he charged on Fort Wagner and even though seriously wounded he held up the American flag until he was finally rescued and taken to the rear. There are plenty of black hero’s out there and there stories. You just need to look for them.

@@MishimasGhost The black Panthers 761st tank Battalion fought with Lt. Gen George Patton at his request. They saw action at the battle of the Bulge and other battles with honor. Black troops fought as combat soldiers on the beaches of Normandy with the 1st infantry division. Not to mention the heroism of Dorie Miller at Pearl Harbor. Just last week I personally attended a ceremony honoring PO 1st class Charles French who rescued 15 of his shipmates when thier ship was sunk by the Japanese.towing them with a raft for 6 to 8hrs in shark infested waters. I wouldn't call that a poor performance.Can't forget about the Tuskegee Airmen white pilots requested them to escort their bombers. The famed Red Ball Express supply truck convoys kept the allies supplied all through Europe during the war. Not meaning to offend anyone but the 9th (200 men) and 10 Cav (400 men) were at Kettle Hill with the rest of Wheeler's Cav. Div. (2000 men) Kent's First Inf. Div. (5,000 men) attacked San Juan Hill, the only Black soldiers at San Juan were the 24th Inf. (450 men) in Wikoff's brigade. The 25th Inf (500 men) was in Lawton's Division of about 6,000 men at El Caney. The four black regiments only totaled about 1700 men out of 18,000. Also, the 1st Vol. Cav. (Rough Riders) landed in Cuba with 600 men. At Las Guasimas they lost 7 men killed and 34 wounded NOT one third!). The interviewee is right that Gen. Wheeler's Cav Div. did not arrive on San Juan Hill until the battle was mostly over. Lawton's Inf. Div. fought at El Caney all afternoon and after capturing the fort rested for several hours. It was after sunset when Lawton's Div at last arrived in the San Juan Ridge. Wheeler's Cav. Div moved left to make room for Lawton is not well informed. The Black soldiers fought well throughout the campaign. The real problem they had was while traveling through the south on trains and later in camp at Tampa. Just to clarify the geography both San Juan Hill and Kettle Hill were summits along the San Juan Heights which ran west to east, south of Santiago. Both were fortified with barbed wire fences, trenches and "block-houses". The State Volunteer units were held back during the battle because of their inferior weapons (single-shot black powder, "trap-door" rifles) and lack of experience. The 71st NY was sidelined before the attack on San Juan Hill by Gen. Kent and the Michigan regiments were sent south to guard a bridge over the San Juan River.

I had read similar accounts of what happened to the Rough Riders, they played a small part in the Spanish-American War. I remember that Roosevelt was assigned to a different hill, not any of the major hills that had to be taken from the Spanish. The US had inferior weapons to the Smokeless German made Mausers the Spanish were using. I will have to pick up a copy of this author's book. I served in the US Army at the tail end of the Vietnam War and we were fully integrated.

Of course they wouldn't risk Roosevelt's life by putting him in the thickest parts of combat. The fact that people believed his lies is laughable all by itself. My own history teacher said Roosevelt was a huge liar, who took the lion's share of glory, when it was the Buffalo soldiers that did most of the fighting. And my teacher could be a huge racist at times. He'd skip over the sections in our history book that talked about blacks. But at least he gave those Buffalo soldiers the credit they were due.

As a history grad student with a MA I hate these pop-historians written books on history. They always use terms like "Unknown story" and such things on topics where there are literally dozens of books, some over 30 years old on. I mean every single class on military history in the last 40 years had taught this about the Rough Riders. There are at least half-a-dozen books in my colleges library on the black troops of San Juan Hill alone and every book on American Military History going back to Russel Wiegley's classic from the 1970's has mentioned this. Stop re-writing old and well done topics and try taking credit for it when you did no original research just to sell books. This is why the professional history world hates most of these types of people (Ian Kershaw and a few other do follow academic standards and don't try passing off well written topics as their own work as if they are breaking something new). While some of his other books are great, but Reason should not promote this book until he changes the title and admits that all he did was just a rehash of what a lot of other people have already done and gives them the proper credit

5:02 wikipedia says that the SPanish had bolt action 5-shot rifles, and the main white forces had similar new rifles, and the Colored troops had 1873 Springfield rifles - the same single shot breech-loading rifles used in the Battle of the Little Bighorn 22 years earlier. It was a still-legit weapon but was outclassed by 1890. Odd how front line infantry would be issued less-effective guns. Still, the Buffalo soldiers still contributed to the victory.

So the buffalo soldiers who were up kettle hill were able to easily defeat the Spanish soldiers due to their military prowess while Teddy roosevelt and the rough riders who were up the San Juan hill and were getting wiped out as they charged the Spanish soldiers due to the fact that the Spanish soldiers were more heavily armed than them and Roosevelt struggled which is why he lost control of his horse and fell off as he Attempted rush up San Juan Hill and only got up the hill when the war was over. The Rough Riders were decimated and we give them no glory for giving it all? It is true that the Black soldiers known to the army as "Immunes" fought superbly and deserve more credit. Teddy was lucky to have made it out. The Spanish numbered about 750-1000 on the hill and they were armed with fast loading Mauser rifles which gave them a tactical edge. A battery of Gatling Guns made a big difference as well. Technology was a big factor in this war.

While i do agree that the Black soldiers get little attention for their effots in the spanish american war, i think the historian is too over the top in his revisionism, to the point that he was kinda anti-roosevelt and anti-white. Here are some innacuracies from his discussion that i would like to point out: 1. The rough riders never fell into a trap in las guasimas. In fact, they were the ones who suprised the spaniards and shot first. The buffalo soldiers also didnt “rescue” them, since by the time they arrived the rough riders have already pushed the spaniards back to their second trench and linked with the regulars. Roosevelt also didnt lose “many men” at that time. Hell there were overall 27 american deaths from the whole army in that one battle”. 2. Both Blacks and the Rough Riders were harassed during the battle of san juan hill, not just teddy roosevelt’s men. While i agree that the first to reach the hill was one Sgt George Berry of the 10th Cavalry, the fighting didnt just ended when the blacks got there first. When the Rough riders reached the hill, the fighting was still ongoing on. And their arrival actually helped the Blacks to finally take much of the Spanish positions atop of the hill. 3. This idiot historian claims that the blacks shiuld be given the sole recognition of taking san juan hill without even considering that they wouldnt even be there without Lt. John Parker’s gatling guns. Hell the machine guns from them actually saved these black soldiers lives. So again, BOTH BLACKS AND WHITES did their part in that battle. 4. Also he praised the blacks but didnt even mentioned or recognized the native americans. FUCKING UNBELIEVABLE.

If I recall correctly, TR was very impressed with the actions of the 10th Cavalry at San Juan Hill. And every book and article I've read credits the 10th Cavalry the same as the Rough Riders for their parts in securing the Santiago Heights. I happen to recall reading that when TR stood and yelled, "Follow me!", the only troops who followed were his Rough Riders and the 10th Cavalry.

This author is telling the story correctly as per the US military records, the memoirs of the higher-level officers, and diaries of the troops that fought in those battles. Note most of the rough riders died pretty early as they were not professionally trained soldiers and were seeking glory. There is a film of TR trying to recreate the "charge up San Juan Hill on horseback and because of the terrain, there is no way they could do that even without anyone shooting at them with superior weapons. Most US troops were armed with the antiquated Trapdoor Springfield, the lucky ones were armed with the .30-40 Krag-Jørgensen rifle.

Both "Rough Riders: Theodore Roosevelt, his Cowboy Regiment, and the Immortal Charge up San Juan Hill" by Mark Lee Gardner and "The War Lovers" by Evan Thomas are written with the firsthand sources and post-war documents but they both support the correct version of events, with only minor deviations. That version of events being, the Rough Riders surged forward (as TR was the only one who had received orders to attack), with the other Regiments following. At some point, the units intermingled due to casualties among officers and men and TR was the man leading them forward, atop Little Texas, although about halfway up, he dismounted. Some soldiers may have reached the top of Kettle Hill first and guidons planted but no one, including TR himself has ever come to a definitive conclusion of who that was. In the event, it didn't matter, the battle was raging, men were dying and San Juan Hill itself was being assaulted by the infantry. The claim of "higher level officers" giving their input can immediately be discarded. The only officers who outranked TR weren't at Kettle Hill, they were either at San Juan or miles away. Although TR later changed his opinion on the 10th Cavalry, there can be no question that he respected and trusted them. It seems that most of the white soldiers respected them and a few shared their canteens, with the lack of water available, I'd say that's a more than sufficient praise. The Rough Riders weren't professional soldiers, no. But they were just as good as any regular cavalry regiment, a fact often repeated by even those outside the Regiment. The reason they took heavier casualties was because they were the first to engage the enemy in both of the battles they participated in and made a frontal assault against heavily fortified prepared positions. The claim of "they all died early on" is patently false as "early on" would either mean the Battle of Las Guasimas (which totaled 8 Rough Riders killed) or the early stage of the assault on Kettle, neither of which are supported by either iteration of "The Rough Riders" or "The War Lovers". In addition, the false assumption of "they were only in it for the glory" would apply to the vast majority of US servicemen at the time, both regular and volunteer as there was no conscription. Every man in uniform was what we'd call today, a "volunteer". Neither TR nor his Regiment spent the entire battle of the San Juan Heights on horseback so whether he could do it on camera or not is irrelevant. Finally, although most of the US volunteers were armed with the older Springfield rifles, every man in the cavalry division (save for one), regular or volunteer was armed with a Krag. It should also be noted that only in terms of reloading was the Mauser superior, in all other aspects, the rifles are tied for performance. The Spanish artillery was decidedly superior but once the US troops began their assaults on the Heights, that advantage seems to have disappeared. Finally, the Maxim machine guns of the Spanish were only used at Las Guasimas and were still overcome by the cavalry and infantry. After that battle, they seem to have disappeared as they were not used again. So, I'm sorry but the majority of your statement is incorrect.

For this his brother officers derisively gave him the nickname Black Jack. During World War I he placed several of his Black combat regiments under french command because he knew that the French would treat his men better that his own American officers. One of these units became known as the Harlem Hellfighters. In recognition of their bravery during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, 171 officers and men received medals and the entire regiment received the French Croix de Guerre.

Roosevelt praised the soldiers who saved his men just after the battle and then conveniently 'forgot' about them later in his career. Funny story actually: After that battle, the US Army leadership basically told Roosevelt to 'go home and leave soldiering to soldiers'. He VERY nearly got his entire command wiped out fighting a battle that didn't need to be fought at all! The Spanish forces were retreating off the hill! The Spanish were soldiers, not monsters. When they realized they were shelling a hospital, they were horrified and stopped. They sent word to the US forces that they were pulling back and Roosevelt either did not get that memo or ignored it. So, the Spanish stopped their shelling and would have retreated off that hill, except a certain loudmouth bully boy decided to try and make a name for himself by saving the day when ti didn't 'need' to be. So suddenly, the Spanish troops could 'not' retreat or it would have opened their entire force's flank up to assault. So like the disciplined soldiers they were, they held their line instead. And then? Roosevelt and his Rough Riders assaulted the wrong hill and didn't bother looking to see if there were OTHER enemies nearby. Which there were! If those Buffalo Soldiers had not been on the ball and been 'right there', he and his men would have likely all died. Even CUSTER knew better than ol' Teddy how to do that kind of thing. But hey! A loudmouth politico got votes out of it! Who cares about stupid things like American lives lost! Why should we care about those any more than loyalty, honor and duty? Some things never change. Colin Powell never experienced racism in the military. I wish my dad experience was the same as his. My dad fought in the Korean War too. He told us that most of the officers in charge were from the Southern states and pure racists. Originally, he was from another country and was not used to being called the "N" word. He stated how ignorant they were. Now my dad was very handsome, intelligent; bi-lingual spoke English, Spanish and some German, a math wiz with a photographic memory. If is okay to ask a President/President-Elect what they plan to do for the "black" community(and it certainly needs help), is it okay for a "white" person to do the same?

Jerry Tucille claims that out of 500 Rough Riders, only 50 survived. Where did he get that number??? Its very good to highlight the bravery and how important the Buffalo soldiers were, but he seemingly overcorrects history and completely dowbplays the rough riders. I cant take hin seriously for that. Roosevelt definitely downplays the Buffalo soldiers actions, most likely id say because he was a polictian and not actually racist, he would lose face as many others were racist at the time and he couldnt afford that. One reason i dont think him to be racist was Booker T.Washingtons invite to help the image of Black people in America. I do also believe he most likely did make put him and his men to be more heroic as he wanted to make his image look even better as a polictian (which he was very good at)

Powell shared a common ancestor with the Spencer family - Princess Diana and could also be related to General MacArthur. His Brother was a former employee of the British Railways living in East Dulwich, London UK. I think Powell's neice performed at the UK's National Theatre during the early Nineties. Another "Buffalo Soldier", Regiment was given the task of assisting General Custer during his last stand but arrived too late. There are some marvellous images of Custer playing with black Childrey whist on leave. Probably from the Smithsonian. The original Buffalo Soldiers were actually admired by some native Americans who were known to lick their wrists to remove what they thought was some kind of paint. Some tribal leaders even invited or encouraged them to actually breed with their squawes. We mustn't forget that nearly 1/10th of native American land was given over to the American Negro population during the late Nineteen Century for their endeavours making America's black economy the 7th largest economy at that time.

Actually the term "Buffaloes" was the derogatory name given to North Carolinians who joined the Union Army during the Civil War. So white troops gave black troops the derogatory name "Buffaloes". What is also interesting is America doesn't have buffaloes, it has Bison.

We are still treated bad. Our history is white washed or not taught today. I've been treated poorly because of my skin since I was a child and I am 39-year-old now. Walk in our shoes. If they show how great our ppl where, maybe they'd love themselves more that a pair of shoes and a nice car. Only music that gets promoted is the bullshit. Yes, we are destroying ourselves, no doubts there but with the help of the powers that be. this goes deeper that any ocean. The metaphysical aspects needs to be reexamined. I would love to brief you all on it but the attitude of the United States and the world is too bias to be comprehensive. -Fin

My dad was a Buffalo Soldiers in the 10th Calvary
