Reason's Nick Gillespie talked with Mauss, a comedian who tours the country discussing his psychedelic experiences, at the Psychedelic Science 2023 conference.

_____________
"I never pictured a world where marijuana would be anywhere close to legal, and it's mind-blowing to me that mushrooms are being decriminalized everywhere," says Shane Mauss, a comedian who tours the country discussing his psychedelic experiences.
Reason caught up with him at the Psychedelic Science 2023 conference, held in Denver this June, where he participated in a "roast" of the psychedelic scene. The conference was sponsored by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, or MAPS, and a reported 13,000 people gathered in The Mile-High City to discuss every aspect of drug policy, research, and culture.
Mauss, who also hosts a science podcast called Here We Are, shared his thoughts about the mainstreaming of psychedelic drugs, the surprising pace of legalization efforts, and the role that Joe Rogan and other public figures play in normalizing psychedelics.

The information is already there and when you take the trip you get to recieve that extra info... Think of it like a gaming computer, if you throw in a super video card in a regular computer it can render new information, but when you pull that video card back out it cant recieve that information anymore. If you recorded what you saw and played it back you would see the sober world, you would see what you always see. You have to turn the filter off to see it, but maybe if u took the trip while you experinced the revording you could in fact see the past trip

I think it's gen X. a lot of us went hard in the 90s with weed, lsd, mushrooms, ext you name it. some of us died, some of us didn't and we seen through the rhetoric and the stigma. it opened our eyes. I think that's why we're here and why we are where we are, gen X and we listened to the old heads of the 60s, we seen what the government done to the hippie movement. now we are cutting through the bureaucracy and red tape. better living through chemistry. your brain is not an egg and drugs are not bad.

Mauss does present as less articulate than Gillespie for sure, but he’s not exactly a randomized double blind peer reviewed study in psychedelic use vs placebo. He had depression since age 10. He wasn’t going to be firing as succinctly as Gillespie, drugs or not. I do believe there is healing potential in judicious use of psilocybin or DMT for many people - I’ve seen it. Michael Pollan didn’t advocate years of repeated use…

Strongly recommend just sticking to shrooms if you want an hallucinogenic experience. I was given “DMT" one time by someone I trusted (at the time) and it turned out too intense that the trip lasted for 24 hours. Can't really be sure what you're getting aside from shrooms. Cause I personally have never had a bad experience with mushrooms though.

Weird how rational Shane sounds. Got my own beefs with reason but I respect the sentiment. Last I saw Shane I was worried that he had gone too far. Had one of those myself recently. Point is I think the empathy you get from responsible tripping is the goal. As a life long depressive. Not sure if it’s treatment resistant cuz I’m not sure if being quiet and eating mac n cheese is making anyone happy, but different strokes. I’m a fan of regulation of all drugs. Lord knows my dad needed pain med while he died but morals. Bwha bwah bwha. Stay safe out there.

@PHILOMATHIC1 Many of these substances allow people to step outside the dumpster pile of cultural programming that people's thoughts are laiden with. I would argue many people are incapable of useful, valuable thoughts without being able to step outside of their own culture. Travel the world, take a psychedelic, do any number of things that challenge the status quo of your beliefs and only then can real VALUE of thought be gained.

I wonder how many..... Okay I have to be tactful here. I mean no disrespect. When he mentioned Joe Rogan and his usage of psychedelics, it made me think of how his audience is mostly right wing. When I think of right-wing people I think that they mostly haven't had one of those spiritual kind of life changing trips because they usually involve losing your individuality and you see the whole universe and everyone in it as one. When you have that type of experience, they say it is lasting and you will look at people differently with love and acceptance, which is something that unfortunately I don't see too much of a quality from right-wing people. If you are right wing, then by all means please reply to this and let's have a dialogue respectfully.
@quigonlynn1
@quigonlynn1 10 ай бұрын
With all due respect most of what you have said is completely incorrect. Love and acceptance is a human trait, not a left or right wing ideal. People can lean one way or the other and still be kind or cruel and there are no human qualities that one 'side' displays more than the other, people are individuals and this whole right vs left is just made up nonsense that's fuelled by social media and the sooner folk realise its in no way important the better.

if you are so deep in your conditioning, psychedelics may not penetrate an entrenched mindset. Religions that are supposed to be based on love are often at the core of oppression, abuse, mass killing and genocide.

He’s a smart guy but he definitely has the quality of somebody whose brain has baked off some of its usefulness. He was surprised and a bit puzzled by the question of what the world will look like if people are allowed to do psychedelics for 40 years. Isn’t that his whole goal in life, and he didn’t think about how the world would look if he got what he wanted??
