One of the problems with this country is that people don't stand on principle. Frankly if someone wants to pass hate crime legislation, then they should pursue that legislation in the state they live in. Having 50 states allows us to see what works and what does not. May the state with the best policies succeed, while those who do not will have a better idea of why their policies are failing.

Hate crimes does not "tell society that some people are above others because it's more of a crime to do it to them", but it looks at the intent of the crime and intent play a significant rule in many crime. I am white and if beat up a black man because he called me a name, it is assault, but if I beat him up because he is black, the intent was and result is different. Case one, if you don't want to be beat up, don't call ppl names, case 2... don't be black.

I would hope that the consequences of beating me would not be less serious then if someone of a different color were beat. Can you imagine what it would be like if there were different severity of punishments dependent on the the race of the persons involved in the assault.
