The reason for the symbol’s inclusion has to do with the founding of the Iron Legion. In the lore they were founded by an empire ruled by a Centurion, and as such the Vortiger, who represents the “king”/leader of the Iron Legion bears the symbol as a way to honor his ancestors.

I don't think it's going to be Roman. If I would have to bet, my money would be on Saxon warrior or leader, before actual knights but at the time when Vikings were raiding England. Just a name alone points at certain leader or king but some suggest that Vortiger could mean leader or king in general. Also if we look at other two heroes coming, they are inspired by legends, Viking with hammer is obviously Thor and Samurai with axe one of Japanese legendary heroes but I forgot his name lol. So my guess would be that knight will be version of King Arthur himself, or random leader/warrior inspired by Saxon.

I began doing research to try to debunk your theory (because I really don't want another ancient Roman soldier hero), but the more I look into it the more it looks like you're on to something The symbol on the shield is called the winged sun, which originated in Egypt. The Greeks and Egyptians had a lot in common artistically speaking, as they traded with each other quite often. As we all know the Romans took a lot of inspiration from the Greeks, hence where the symbol comes from I've found that exact symbol on a fair number of Roman scrutum shields, however the Vortiger's shield isn't the traditional red, it has spikes, and the sword (from what I can tell) is a fantasy style arming sword from far past the fall of the Roman empire. I don't personally see any eastern themes with the sword itself, but I'm no expert Finally, Google image search "byzantine knight." They look an awful like the Vortiger's silhouette, no? I could get on board for this, a byzantine knight from the middle ages would actually bring a new aesthetic to the knight faction

I don't want another Roman either (I haven't seen anyone who actually does, lol), but as long as it's not too Roman I'm fine with it. Too bad if the Vortiger really is from the Byzantine Empire since it's unlikely we'll be seeing plate armor like I was hoping we would. Not that plate armor would oftenly be used with shields, so the chance was slim anyway.

5th century, dont miss that part. Warlord is 11th century and that's the closest recamblance as what they looked like when they invaded England. Although centurion is 49bc (i'm not sure on the exact numbers) so he could have great armour or more viking-like armour.

I mean, he could be a British warlord, since even though the Roman empire left Britain in the 5th century, there were still connections between them. So the Roman symbols could be traces of the former Roman influence on Britain gaining back it's independence under the vortigern. Or whatever, I dunno.

Ambrosius Aurelianus A 5th Century British Warlord considered "the Last of the Romans." So it's probably still a Knight, but with some Roman aesthetics as well as Knight. Aurelianus was considered a Romano-Britain.

@Reavyne Gaming that sword in the photo with the shield is a long-sword and long-swords wasn't invented till 1200 AD so it cant be the war lord from 500 and the shield there is curved at the top and can be see getting narrower at the bottom which is the standed shield used around the 12th century by most knights since it covers most of the body and can be used while riding. i doubt that it would be a roman i believe it would be after the roman empire had fell as well the Romans didn't do much mounted combat so that it isn't particularly useful to them over the standed tower shield and i think the shield design is from a later period . so the character will be set during when the Christianity is at its high and chivalry(which was originally named after horse mounted combat) since the sword was invented around 1200 ad when Europe was dominantly christian. but whether its byzatine or not, is hard to say usually their swords are portrayed with a curved edge like a sabre and if they were going for a byzantine person i don't know why they didn't give them a curved sword rather than a long sword usually used by the more western Europeans. and the devs could of given it that sword a different design from the wardens and remember we haven't had a long sword yet, wardens sword aint one since a longsword can be wielded one hand an two handed. i don't know why they gave him/her a serrated shield no shield like that exist that we know of. but all this could be incorrect since the devs have shown they don't care to much about historical accuracy with the viking war hammer since there were no war-hammers made or used till 1382 after the viking age. i dont know about the symbols though i don't know but, can we pls get Reavyne to see this or to get it some attention because is info that deserves to be shared . aswell know i think about it since we dont see that rest of the blade it coul be curved though the hilt pomle and start of the blade dosn't a sabre. While this whole video was just speculation, there are indeed some things I want to mention. -The Vortiger's sword and shield that we see now might just be one of his many higher tier weapon sets, as it holds the same designs as Warden's higher tier swords. It wouldn't make much sense for Ubisoft to stick some big dude in armour with a gucci sword and shield in the game while the rest of the cast looks like they've been worn and torn. It's possible that the default set for the Vortiger will look a lot more simple and European when we finally get a good look at him, rather than the coincidental "Persian" look from his sword. -The symbol on Centurion's Cestus, Vort's shield, and Glad's buckler does have a questionable placement though. It's either Ubisoft just reusing assets, since that same symbol can be found on quite a few knight maps, or it actually has some sort of purpose. Although Glad's buckler is a very recent coincidence, my quick and cheap theory is just that the symbol is the knight's way of placing their mark on foreign help. Either that, or it's a real-life symbol that Ubisoft just likes using a lot with some sort of weird meaning, though that kinda takes a weird turn in itself, and I can't say I've ever seen a symbol like that in Roman times. -What's funny is that a lot of people don't realize we already have a Byzantine themed hero under our noses, that hero being Centurion with his Dalmatia armour set, which bears a clear resemblance to the scaled armour depicted from Byzantium. While you can argue that Cent isn't a real Byz. hero, Centurion technically isn't a Centurion, neither are most of the knights legitimate knights, nor are the vikings...well, actual vikings, save for Berserker. -The idea of a Briton representing the Byzantine empire sounds a bit odd in my mind. While it is true that the Vortiger was around for the 5th century with the Byz. Empire, that's just sorta the basic result of Rome falling. Rome ruled over Britannia until it was growing weaker, to which the people themselves easily took back their land while Rome shattered and was left with Byzantium. I can't say it isn't too far-fetched though, as many inhabitants of England (vikings too) fled over to the Byzantine empire from the invading Normans and were put into the Varangian Guard, however this was several centuries later and these Varangians often wielded axes and spears, rather than (fancy) swords and shields. My two cents to the whole thing is that the Vortiger is the torchbearer to the Romans after they fell and the pre-cursor to the knights, acting as an evolution from one era to the next with emphasis on the knights. But for all I know, Ubi might just pull a 180 and say "lol yeah he's a roman/byz." or "it's just a name, he's a basic knight lol" and I'm sorta fine with that. I'm also sorry if these statements sounds snarky or if I'm trying to sound right or something, you can blame me for being some history nerd. Either way, this was still a good video, since there really is no harm in speculating.

his sword is very knightly because of the long thin blade the only reason the hilt curves down is to protect his wrist and hand and the long thin swords like that are usually used for heavy slashing and poking/stabbing

The gauntlet decal could just be a re-used asset they do it a lot for example Shaman's shield on her back are re-used Valk and Warlord shields so the shield reusing a decal wouldn't be to far fetched to assume that the wings are just reused assets and if he is Roman he'd use a gladius while the splash art sword is most likely a short sword and if he is a King it would make sense for his hilt and cross guard to be a fancy

As always an incredible detailed, in depth analysis Reavyne. While a Byzantine warrior would be an intriguing twist, I'm hoping that Vortiger is, like you mentioned in your analysis, merely a code name for the character and that the actual character we get is more of a Knights Templar-ish design more akin to the 11th century or later. I think that's what the community wants, given what I've seen posted on various forums and Facebook feeds. And honestly I think that the promo material we've seen is meant to be more artistic/fantasy and not representative of the actual characters that come out, just to keep the hype train rolling and us guessing as to what is coming.

I think i have a good idea on where this is going. In year 4 they will release a new faction, the new faction will be the romans. They will release a new vanguard for the roman faction and then move the vortiger(roman heavy) the gladiator( roman assassin) and centurion( roman hybrid) into the new roman faction. This will therefore complete the whole roman faction.
