The entire dialogue is informative and done in a very relaxed manner. Good job. Both Hossan and Gary gave very good points on living in Johore Bahru and having an office working in JB respectively - practical and expressed themselves naturally. Thank you very much. Probably - a small feedback is that for the interviewer ( TFC ) is that the chair you are sitting on may looked like a wheelchair ( at initial first glimpse ) and you may consider to use another style of chair the next time. Just a small feedback for your consideration. Thanks✌

I spent the last 53 minutes entirely hooked on this interview. I am a Malaysian who made the move to JB some 13 years ago. My husband and I began our careers in Singapore and JB respectively all those years ago. He is a causeway warrior and does the commute daily - he has done it in all forms, from buses to carpools, still refuses to own a Singaporean car. Haha. In my capacity as a dental clinic owner here in JB (shameless plug: I run Pink and White Dental at 1Tebrau), I've had the good fortune of meeting patients from Singapore who have shared with me exactly what Gary and Hossan have shared. It makes me incredibly proud to be living in JB, to be one of the providers that is giving back something of value to the community who are here or the community who comes to JB. I get to have a hand in making JB a nice place to live in. My patient sent this video to me when we were talking about singaporeans coming to live in JB. I have never felt more proud of this place that I have called my home. I would never trade the pace of life in JB with the traffic jams in KL.

@ChoonKokLim5 ай бұрын
There is a trade off for safety with lower cost of living. Depends on individual. If you can retire in Singapore, whether you are millionaire or not, you are already a winner. There are Singaporeans who earned more than $10,000 to $50,000 a month and still in debt. It is really about financially management, pragmatic and realistic expectation of oneself and own situation. As the Chinese saying, gold house silver house, still my own dog house better.
@weesonteh87514 ай бұрын
@@ChoonKokLim agreed…life is always a series of trade off. You can trade freedom (aka car) for BMW (Bus, MRT and Walking) to save money. You can trade “safety” for lower cost of living in Malaysia….as a matter of fact if safety is the ultimate goal you should not even be going out of Singapore at all, stay in your cubicle (HDB or condo) as there are too many risk just leaving your premise..or better still return to covid lockdown and you will be very safe in your own place. Yes it is sarcasm but for those who choose living as opposed to being be scared of your own shadow the world is your oyster. Anywhere outside of Singapore is already “sacrificing safety”…. Malaysia is very safe by any international standards. Not free of crime by any measure but extremely safe. Somehow it is only us that rates Malaysia as dangerous as drug ridden central American states…I think the problem lies more in our mental state rather than reality… In any regards, it is always your own choice how you choose to live your life…the true winners in life are those who choose to live life.

It would be nice to know what the list would show but unfortunately everyone's paradigm is different and also individual situation differs eg family, young or old kids, older dependents, career WFH, do you like to drive, your perception of what it means to be "safe", I could go on...so whatever list is drawn up would likely have a bias somehow. My take is for the individual to evaluate all possibilities and make an informed choice. JB is so nearby not like some far away destination. Spend a couple of weeks here if possible. Soak in the local atmosphere and see whether it fits you. JB is not for everyone or may I put it more subtly, more likely only a small minority with specific demographic can or would be able to make the move 😮 TBH....again that is my own opinion aka personal bias 😂...

Meanwhile PAP is focused on bringing in new foreigners to replace lost Singaporeans ... good luck Singapore! With your cost of living going into the Exosphere, the new foreigners would eventually leave too (They have in fact already started!)

The big hurdle would be the MM2H criteria. How would that work against those funds actively churning out passive income instead. If its individually based, the costs would be double for husband & wife. Hope it doesn't become another Thailand. Personally, retirement might take the form of rotation amongst the neighbouring countries to meet the visa requirements. 😢
@weesonteh87515 ай бұрын
Yes MM2H is a hurdle mainly because of the delays in launching of the new revised program. The FD required is for the whole family irrespective of number. In addition, you can use the interest generated and/or use 50% for property purchase. Personally IMHO, IF the new program is launched the demand will be overwhelming and my fear is that the annual quota will be hit within a short period of time hence frustrating those who missed out😮
@Phonedumb5 ай бұрын
@weesonteh8751 Thank you for the feedback. Let's see what comes up. The politics there is so volatile and with it, the MM2H criteria. Hope that once it is defined, it will not change again & screw up the plans of those who made life decisions based on it
@weesonteh87515 ай бұрын
MM2H is only one of the various ways to reside in Malaysia. Obviously it is the "preferred" option but short of that you can also get a working visa, digital nomad visa, guardian visa or weekend holiday home 😊. Everyone situation differs but have heart knowing that you are just mins away from good ol Singapore. Living in JB makes a lot of sense being so near yet far enough to significantly lower your cost of living...in actual fact...you don't even have to live there to lower your cost of living by merely doing most of your household groceries shopping and other discretionary expenses. Moving "permanently" obviously requires lots more planning but in the meantime you could always take advantage of the economic arbitrage.

8:55 The most important part of the 54 min video. And so it begs the question of HOW exactly is any Singaporean going to "retire" in JB when the MM2H scheme has been suspended since 2022 😅. Recent announcement in Dec 2023 has not lived up to hype as NO aplications have neen approved since then as the approving authorities still await final MY cabinet decision
@weesonteh87515 ай бұрын
Agreed and really frustrating…the new program with benign requirements was suppose to be announced since last month but nothing so far…guess have to be practice patience…no sense of urgency apparently or politically too sensitive or a combination of both…just monitor this space. I do know of people who are actually submitting all their documents up front now and once the program is announced they get their ticket up front. I suggest you do the same if you are really keen…

Malaysians are struggling and suffering in pain about the country's high inflation! As a Singaporean your mind will automatically calculate the rate of ÷ by 3+ when in Malaysia and bingo all things damn cheap. It is NOT cheap for Malaysian be it medical, dental, petrol, living etc...😢
@weesonteh87515 ай бұрын
Yes agreed. However you have to be cognizant to the fact that this interview is meant to be from the Singaporean perspective and not the Malaysian perspective (except the 500k Malaysians earning SGD 😂). I honestly feel for the locals who earn RM and spending in Malaysia...it is hard. However they could make the choice to work in SG and get the same perspective as us too 😊...we have historically welcomed Malaysians anyway.
@Raksasaification4 ай бұрын
That's your social economic circle. Many are earning 20, 30, 40k ringgit a month as employees in mnc (still lower vs same position in Singapore plus higher employer contribution for cpf). These groups of ppl have better life vs peers earning 6,7,8k in Singapore in terms of cars and size of house hence number of maids. What Singaporeans need to do is be grateful for your government in that the lowest 40%, lowest 20% in Singapore have better life vs the same group in Malaysia.
@weesonteh87514 ай бұрын
@@janxai1269 I agree with you. Did not mean to be rude in any sense (but could be taken offensively by Malaysians and I understand) For the majority of Malaysians earning locally, prices are high. Yes you are right when it comes to Singaporeans (and 1 million Malaysians working in Singapore) going into JB to live or shop, we will inadvertently convert back into SGD. You do have to realise that it is just natural to convert and suddenly realise how ridiculously expensive it is to purchase the same item in Singapore. Notice how I avoided the word "cheap" in the above sentence. Cheap or expensive is always a relative value and probably better to be culturally sensitive to say how ridiculously expensive Singapore is rather than how cheap Malaysian goods/services are for those residing in Singapore and coming over the border. Hope that gives you a better perspective and apologies 🙏 if the conversation came across in a wrong manner.

I think you need to be careful on what you say about being cheap in JB. It may sound cheap to you but some of the Malaysian are earning much more lower and RM200 would mean a lot for a doctor's visit. I go often to JB and things are getting more expensive because Singaporean's are saying it is cheap in JB. When the RM strengthen, what will you have to say then?

Agreed. Anywhere outside Singapore is less safe. If you compare JB or Malaysia it is far safer than western countries….i have stayed in both and I know the difference. Regardless use common sense wherever you are. Yes JB is definitely’less safe’ but on an overall global basis it is extremely safe place.
