Jim: Hi. Hi. Wait a minute. (He runs down to her) Hi. I seen you before.
Judy: Well, stop the world.
Jim: Just bein' friendly.
Judy: Well now that's true. But life is crushing in on me.
Jim: Life can be beautiful. I know where it was.
Judy: Where what was?
Jim: Where I first saw ya. Everything going OK now? (Gesturing toward her house) You live here, don't you?
Judy: Who lives?
Jim: Hey, where's Dawson High?
Judy: At University and 10th.
Jim: Mmm. Thanks.
Judy: You wanna carry my books?
Jim: I got my car. You wanna go with me?
Judy: I go with the kids.
Jim: Yeah, I bet. (The gang's car screeches around the corner) All right.
Judy: You know, I bet you're a real yo-yo.
Jim: (under his breath): I love you too.
Jim (James Dean) conning his parents (Ann Doran, Jim Backus) then off for the first day of school, meeting Judy (Natalie Wood) whom he's seen at the police station, in Nicholas Ray's Rebel Without A Cause, 1955.

@gymnastix
@gymnastix 5 жыл бұрын
Really, you think the character of "Jim Stark" (James Dean) is what "made the movie" of "Rebel without a Cause?" I thought the character of "John 'Plato' Crawford" (Sal Mineo) was by far the more compelling, Jim's (Dean's/"Stark's") red windbreaker notwithstanding. That "Plato" was so tortured to have mentally made "Jim" and "Judy" (Natalie Wood) his adoptive parents--a confession revealed in the drained swimming pool scene--was just fascinating. Even "Buzz Gunderson" (Corey Allen) had a less obvious pathos which made one wonder about what really made that antagonist tick, before he went over the cliff in that "chicken run." By the way, my real name is also "Jim." And my sister's name is "Judy." But I may guarantee my late parents were in no way influenced by "Rebel" in naming me and my sis. In fact, I may also guarantee my mom and dad would never have even seen the film, as they were older parents from a pre-rock & roll generation.

'Made' the movie, and made the movie. Ray gave him free range to direct and improvise dialog. One of the saddest parts? The maid, standing alone outside the planetarium. She had just lost a 'son', and likely her job. No one even offered her a ride home. (but of course, it's a movie. Everywhere is within walking distance. Even in LA!)

I got to ride in Jimmy's '49 Merc! Sat right where Natalie sat. It was a special treat for my daughter and I when our family visited the Harrah's Car Museum, Sparks, NV in about 1986. We tooled around the parking lot with the car's own mechanic. We were in 7th heaven! Also wrote to Jimmy's high school Biology teacher for a few years and understood Jim was a good kid and raised by his Aunt and Uncle, Fairmount, Indiana...A devoted Jim Dean fan....

In 1986, I got to ride in Jimmy's '49 Merc. The car was housed at the Harrah's Car Museum in Reno. We had travelled many miles to Reno (from Montana) to see just that car. I was thrilled when the car's own mechanic released the velvet ropes and said, "C'mon, the boss said I'm supposed to take you for a spin." You could not have wiped the grin off my daughter's and my faces as we tooled around the parking lot, sitting just where Natalie sat...One happy memory, for sure. LS

Dean and Wood are wonderful together here. Dean's line, 'I got my car you want to go with me', is the best line in the film. Perfectly delivered, for a moment subtly steps out of character - adult (not high school at all), smooth, very confident and cool. extremely charming and handsome. Great physicality, the eyes, the head toss, the little lip-lick at the end, even the voice is different, deeper. Brilliant. I'm straight and i would have gotten in the car.

Filming of the out of door scenes at 6122 South Citrus Ave. Ladera Park Ca. Northeast of LAX. Then a white middle-class neighborhood. Within 15 years white flight. By 1980's Ladera Park with surrounding neighborhoods like View park was middle to upper African American which I think it still is today. Google street scenes show the alley very similar so many years later. "Judy"'s house is still there and well maintained but with add-ons.

When I was a teenager in the late 70s there was a remarkable 1950s revival in Finland - including clothing, music and movies. A lot of rubbish was available, but some good things too….like this movie. Truly enjoy the dreamy atmosphere of this movie. At the time a certain youth culture ´diinarit´ was named after J. Dean - how funny and strange it seems now.

They have a gallery there with a lot of Jimmy’s personal belongings and items from his films. The gallery still has the white gate on display, it was pretty cool to see, and walk around his hometown. I posted a video tour on my channel for anyone that would like to see the house he grew up in and the gallery and more. ✌️💕

The accident. Maybe it was fated, but mostly, it was a gray car on a gray road on a cloudy day. Being small, it likely looked further away - if the Ford saw it at all. Reports say he wasn't speeding, but daytime running lights might have changed history. Whatever it was - it was massively bad timing! Change the timing 15 seconds either way - and no accident. His 'girlfriend' Ursula Andress was supposed to go to the rally with him, then decided not to. His mechanic was in the car, instead.

I thought so to because profanity and violence was restricted under the Movie Code back in the 1950s. But this film has aged better than a lot of movies at the time.

Star-Lord You know how politicians start out as positive idealist but then they turn into angry egomaniacs on the edge of self destruction that's Citizen Kane for you.

n64wilbert well thats because new politicians start out with the ones that been in it for decades.. already worn out.. corrupt and bored. The system is broken and they should replace politicians in batches every decade like a finger snap. Imagine what kind of changes we'd see every decade. Something bold and new... right now we're living under the thumb of ww2 traumas. We wont have anything better until they all die out and thats still good decade or two away. But the main point is replacing them all at once no exceptions every decade. Now how to achieve that without them trying to kill your ass. When did politics became a job brawling for personal power and gain instead of public service... it was like that ever since its creation... we have to do something drastic.

I read part of Alec Guinness's autobiography, and he said he walked past Dean's car one time and had a premonition, he then said, " Never get in that car again!" And James Dean said, "Aww, don't say that."

If you guys are talking about Natalie Wood, she was only 17 when this was filmed. If you're all talking about someone else, please correct me if I'm wrong.
