The F4U-2 Corsair was designed as a night fighter. Several early F4U-1 Birdcage models were taken off active duty and brought to the states for refitting. These new -2 models featured a bulbous radar pod on the wing and the removal of one 50 Cal to compensate for the weight. These night fighters were designed mainly at the request of the troops on the ground that were bothered during the nights by the Japanese forces flying around the islands, not exactly doing the best for the troops moral. On the plus side these -2 Corsairs were actually quite successful in their role. Another notable feature were the longer night time exhaust stacks on the underside of the aircraft. This Corsair "Black George" was the 4th option with the Tamiya kit and has a few minor errors, I should note that I didn't find this picture of "Black George" until the build was nearly completed and I found it by accident. 1: The wheels are incorrect for this version and should have a tread pattern. 2: On a close inspection of the photograph, it appears that this Corsair has the blister on the main cage that housed a rear view mirror and not the straight back birdcage design as was built. 3: The radar equipment for the interior is not present with the kit, but I can't fault Tamiya for this as I don't believe any F4U-2's still exist.

David R Lentz, Columbus, Ohio, USA (Wednesday, 2 October, 2024) I had built several of these kits, different variants (one being an F4U-2), detailing them as best I could. By contrast, you execute this project so well that I must wonder how you would do with Tamiya’s 1:32nd-scale kits of the early Chance Vought F4U Corsair USN/USMC/FAA Fighter series. Have you acquired any? Incidentally, Bert Kinzey, author of the extensive series of combat aircraft monographs, in his F4U Corsair publication of that list, described this night fighter as painted in the tri-colour scheme of summer 1942 through late 1943, except that the white ventral surfaces would be re-done in black. For those the U.S. Navy had assigned to USS Enterprise (CV-6) Yorktown-class aircraft carrier, the service crews brush-painted in haste so later that night they could fly patrol.

Another beauty . I don't go in for weathering myself but yours is so subtle ( like the subtle panel lines too . ) This kit is probably from the original 90s kits . What we were just saying ; probably still better than Airfix . I built the F4uD years ago the fit was excellent . The only thing I don't like ( which Airfix do do . ) is an easy option for flaps and undercarriage up .
@rebelsatcloudnine4 жыл бұрын
Thank you again Anthony :D I'm really glad that people like the weathering I did on this, as I'm not a big fan of weathering, because I think I do too much. So I tried to create a more used version of the Corsair. I think this kit came out in 1996, and yes it still holds up. I don't usually like models with the folded wings in sections because they don't fit well when extended, but this was the first time I didn't have that as an issue. I think possibly because Tamiya doesn't really sell a separate stand for their models like Airfix, that they more or less assume that most modelers will want the gear down. That being said their larger 32nd scale kits are designed to be in flight or landed.
@AnthonyBrown123244 жыл бұрын
@@rebelsatcloudnine I just hang them on hooks with clear plastic wire ; underneath shelves to add storage space . I think I am more of a collector of aircraft ; than a modeller . So I like the clean lines of the aircraft . Models will never be truly realistic ; so it's a matter of taste ; how they look . Clearly some look better than others of course .

They make an excellent primer for something that's an acrylic, it's pretty hardy and you can sand it down. Plus their Flat Base is the best I've ever come across, far superior to the Tamiya Flat Clear. I was really impressed with how nice these are to airbrush, and that I had a lot of control with the paint. At first they were clogging up the tip of the airbrush, but some Tamiya Acrylic Retarder sorted that out quickly and I was back in action.

Fabulous work, and I specially drooled at all the details on the cockpit (and shame on me that I have still failed to master the technique of making seatbelts and harnesses with that degree of accuracy) and engine. I have never been fond of the airbrush- it seems to me that it takes forever and that I age bad to have the surface primed or painted on when using airbrush, while the hand brush seems much quicker. Nonetheless I have to admit that there are duties for which the airbrush is the best if not only option, like panelling. 10/10 work, as always.
@rebelsatcloudnine4 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean. Sometimes it's difficult to even get an airbrush to cooperate properly. That being said I do have a lot of fun using it.... at least when it's working properly.

Very nice build...fun to watch! One question: as you are applying the pinwash to the panel lines, what did you use to remove the excess - a swab or small paper towel piece? I find that it's almost as easy to remove the wash settling into the crevices as it is to remove the excess wash on the panels! Just wonder how you walk that tightrope.
@rebelsatcloudnine3 жыл бұрын
I used a cotton swab dipped in some enamel thinner. One thing I do is leave the wash to dry for about 24 hours, this lets it harden and dry properly so that when I remove the excess the paint in the panel will stay.

Super build 1 question you are using primer on the exterior but not inside the cockpit any perticular reason
@rebelsatcloudnine4 жыл бұрын
Only because I wasn't going to be handling the interior parts the same as the exterior. The exterior is opened to more abuse, and I wasn't totally sure how the Army Painter paint was going to react. But I'm pleased to report that it was strong.

Thank you very much :) I bought these at a comic book store not to far away from me. Army Painter are easily available online and since I made this video, they have come out with their own brand of airbrushing thinner. I haven't tested it out, but when I spoke to the company they said it has a special formula that has a sort of retarder mixed in.

@rebelsatcloudnine4 жыл бұрын
I've been using their Primer and Anti-Shine Matt Varnish for a few years and I've been thinking for a while if I could airbrush with their paints, and things just fell into place and I tried it out here. They are very nice and easy to airbrush. I was very impressed with how thin I could get the paint, and it kept a good consistency. The coverage was great it never thinned out, like I've experienced with some Vallejo, and it dried quite hard. Honestly, I'd say give them a chance, there's a bit of learning curve to finding the right thinner to paint ratio, but I run into that every time I try out a new paint, but after that you're sailing :D
