Mecha could totally exist the real problem is making them not cost a Nations entire defense budget lol... Which is why I like patlabor implementing smaller mecha into things like construction

Actually probably would not cost that much in totality, more so way over budget relative to simpler existing vehicles etc etc

Patlabor 2 seemed like an attempt to make patlabor fit with real life economic trends but it didn’t really make sense within their constructed reality. Still a great movie tho

Patlabor 2 is less concerned with pure economic trends as it is concerned with the larger downturn, and especially Japans changing foreign policy when it came to military intervention and involvement. If you are interested it was directly related to the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) which had Japanese military personnel involved, this was a key motivator for Oshii, but i wont go in depth until i do my Patlabor series review some day...
