Historical note: “the bitch is dead” is how the book ends, when Bond discovers that that version of Vesper is a SMERSH agent, and that she killed herself over the conflict of interest between her love for Bond and her orders to kill? suborn? don’t really remember? him. For 99% of Casino Royale the Book, Bond is sympathetic, relatable, literally does not have the stomach for murder. This is where he dies inside and becomes, essentially, Sean Connery. The line doesn’t land as strongly in the movie, because M is determined to be his helpline (and good for her!), but it’s still a reasonable marker of “Bond has completed his emotional transformation into The Archetype Of Bond.”
@skurge101
@skurge101 4 жыл бұрын
But the whole process and arc is undermined imo by the insistance of connecting this as Bond's first mission (which it certainly wasn't in the book giving weight to his battle worn attitude)... The film gives the 30 something Bond the emotional sensibilites of a hapless teen (I'll literally murder for this job I immediately want to give up on my first real mission etc).
@johnmorton6229
@johnmorton6229 4 жыл бұрын
@@skurge101 I’d agree to a point. It could be argued that not every mission has you partnered with a woman you fall madly in love with who then ultimately betrays you. It was like OHMSS. Bond had found something he’d been missing and was ready to be happy. He even told Vesper that whatever armor he had, she had stripped him of it. He’s just won over 150 million dollars and only had to give back 15 of it to the British government and probably however much Felix staked him in. He was set for life with the woman of his dreams, I’d give up whatever I had if that was an option. So I don’t think it was ever that he didn’t have the stomach for the job anymore, it’s just he thought he could move on to greener pastures.

@@johnmorton6229 "Her price is far above rubies, or even your million pounds." There is much evidence to support that Bond is not motivated in any way by Money (I suspect he ended up with none of it! ^^). The Book of CR has Bond jaded by his job even before Vesper enters the scene, so she ends up filling a role he effectively made up and that explains his professional blindness to her predicament....the film's determination to be 'Bond Begins' misses this vital aspect which fundamentally undermines both the character, his capabilities and the arc imo, this is compounded still further in QoS by the way Bond's words and actions are contradictory...he definitely left, he definitely was compromised and there is no credible way M could or should overlook that (at least not a competent M). Would that we were given such choices though normalizing the world of Bond too much causes it to cease to be that of Fleming and moves very much to the grey and dour world of Le Carre (RIP).

Just as an FYI, the scene in the stairwell where Bond and the African Warlord are fighting and all the doors are locked from the stairwell side is actually realistic. Most hotels and many office buildings are setup so that the only door unlocked on the stairwell side is the bottom floor as a security precaution and what might seem paradoxical, fire safety. In the event of a fire, the idea is that any exit onto another floor would be dangerous and thus should be blocked. The only 'safe' floor would be the ground floor. This was unfortunately part of the cause of many of the deaths during the arson attack on the Kyoto Animation Studios building as people ran to the stairwells to try to escape the fire but as the ground floor was blocked by the arson, were thus trapped and couldn't get out.

It's a reboot. It's a reboot because everything about this movie serves as an introduction to, and an origin story for, James Bond. Down to the very end, where we finally get the theme song, which tells us "Now he is Bond for real." You can only do an origin story like that in a reboot. Sure, elements carry over, like M. But it's a reboot.

Re: the airport, buying a refundable ticket (especially business/first class) to get airside (e.g. to meet someone or go to a lounge) is viable, since fully refundable tickets are changeable/refundable until the boarding pass is scanned (i.e. you can check in, go through security, and cancel the booking). Someone like Bond who's traveling all over the world on an expense account, whether a secret agent or not, probably has accumulated unused fully-changeable tickets with most airlines. It would not be good cinema, however, to have Bond in the taxi calling British Airways or whatever to change that old ticket to a new F/J ticket so he can get a boarding pass to get through security.

I've never seen a single movie getting CPR right, and it's always infuriating. It's such a simple thing, and movies consistently teach people falsehoods. Most movies show people whose heart has stopped getting back up by themselves, which just doesn't happen. If the heart stops, chest compressions only keep the blood circulating until medical help can arrive. It does not restart the heart. (Though if the heart is still beating, breathing sometimes can resume by itself. But then you'd not be doing chest compressions.) The crime in this movie is that Bond just gives up for no reason. The overall chance for survival for one minute without breathing is 90%, and she only inhaled water without suffering from internal injuries or heart conditions, so her chance would be even better than that. And this is the middle of Venice, in the middle of the day, where a residential building just collapsed. Emergency responders should be there in two or three minutes. He'd just have to keep going for that long and she'd almost certainly have survived.

Here's a thought: Maybe Bond films form "cycles" like the Norse eddas or something. The Brosnan films, for example, are all explicitly about the past coming back to haunt the present. Even Tomorrow Never Dies is loaded with callbacks to previous films and Bond running into characters from his past. If anything, Bond is the embodiment of the status quo coming to squash anyone audacious enough to upset the delicate balance of world power.

This one is my favourite. This is the movie that took a long hard look at Bond and said "you know, that's gotta mess a guy up." It's right there from the opening sequence and song: "if you take a life, do you know what you give?" Some people aren't here for that kind of navel-gazing. But to me, this is the movie that looked at Bond as a person who sacrifices a lot for his country. And it's the movie that really, utterly gutted me. OHMSS may have been the opening salvo of sadness, but the scene where Vesper kisses Bond's hands underwater, trying to calm him down so their last moment together is not filled with anger and sadness...ugh. I adore this movie.

I also had that reaction to "the bitch is dead" when I first saw this but...fun fact...that was most likely an homage to the Casino Royale novel. Much like the movie, Bond is tortured by La Chiffre, saved by enemy agents, recovers in a hospital where he and Vesper fall in love. She commits suicide and leaves a note to Bond explaining everything (pretty much like M does in the movie). However, in the book, once he finds her and reads the note, he calls his boss and the novel ends with "The bitch is dead now". Once I read the novel, that line made a lot more sense.

Even beyond the prequel-y pre-credits sequence, we have James Bond meeting Felix Leiter for the first time, when he had already done so in the very first Bond film. Roger Moore and Timothy Dalton didn't have to be introduced to Felix Leiter. The assumption was that they had already met him . . . in Dr. No. (In fact, Moore even knew Quarrel's son!) So too, General Gogol appeared in The Living Daylights, implying that The Spy Who Loved Me was still very much in continuity despite the recasting. Casino Royale is a reboot in a way that no other Bond's first film was. Not even Goldeneye, which shared almost no overt continuity with previous films beyond the Bond-Q dynamic, actively contradicted or replaced the events of its predecessors.
@spenser9908
@spenser9908 Жыл бұрын
GoldenEye specifically mentions there’s a new M, plus we have to get Felix’s replacement with Jack Wade. So it’s not a reboot, it’s a definite continuation. Brosnan is the same Bond who fought Dr. No. It’s all there.

Since the Brosnan era, it really feels like the innovation has left the Bond franchise. With Connery and Moore, they were the trendsetters with physical stunts and movie technology. Always going after the latest thing they could get their hands on. And with the Brosnan era, it just really feels like they were chasing trends in film making, never really pushing the envelope. This is in stark contrast with Lucasfilm, who were (and still are) constantly innovating, for better or worse. Constantly pushing the limits of technology. From massive models to green screen and CGI. Always seeing how far they can push technology, and seeing what works and what doesn't. Fully CG characters, movies practically entirely filmed in green screen environments (even if in Episode 2, you can very clearly see shades of green in character's hair) and now with The Mandalorian, practically entirely eliminating green screen with The Volume (There is an amazing behind the scenes documentary on Disney+ where they explain The Volume, Disney Gallery; Star Wars: The Mandalorian), which is basically a set with a massive monitor around it, where background graphics are rendered onto in real time using a game engine, and setting the camera as 1st person perspective. It is truly amazing. But back on topic, since Brosnan, Bond has just felt as something from the past. A studio where the spark went out and no longer does anything new, just reuses things other people have done and chasing trends several years after the fact. It is a shame.

On how crazy that last hand of the poker game was, I personally have had a crazy hand that local people talked about for years. First table of the tournament, I had pocket queens and I'm first bet after big blind. I raised pre flop to get all the trash hands out. The flop comes out, 6 6 6. I'm first bet, and I bet like I have the 4th six. Everyone drops till the last bet on the table, who raises. I expect he is wanting to call my buff so I go all in. He goes all in, which makes me think "rut roh raggy". I show my pocket queens. He flips an Ace 6 and quips, "I think my kicker wins it". We all think it's over, but go through the motions of the turn and river. Burn, Queen, Burn Queen. I won with 4 queens against 4 sixes.

The Boeing used for filming is parked at an airfield in england (where top gear used to be made), with the dual dummy engines still attached. There are actually real aircraft with 2 engines per pod, but these are mockups. Also, the stunt-sequence was filmed like 4 weeks apart because they couldn't get one stunt (with the bus) to work right. Also note at 1:07:15 the aircraft in the background. That's why Branson was in the movie.

Great episode! At the time I didn't quite like the movie but I have started to like it more after revisiting for this show. I feel like Le Chiffre had manufactured the tell as a second-level bluff, just so he can trick people to think he's bluffing. And then he accidentally does it after the I-Know-You-Know scene, to show how out of sorts he is with losing.

I liked him in Casino Royale, but ever since then he's become more and more robotic, constantly miserable and just feels more like some Russian henchman than 007. His movies just became more boring and full of annoying characters. Even the new Q is an over-acted twerp of a character, and I like Ben Wishaw. Craig's had his moments for me, but honestly I can't wait to see someone new in the role.

I think that's normal. The first version you experience sets the expectations for whatever media you are consuming. Maybe expectations is the wrong word but I'm very tired and probably shouldn't be typing this right now. Anyway as a couple examples Roger is my bond and Tom Baker is my Dr. Who. It doesn't always work like that so a counter example is Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt is now my definitive version of that song.

Man, I kinda hate myself for being this guy, but - "A Doctor Who character" is really NOT the reference you're looking for when trying to describe how pre-Craig Bond continuity works. The point of Doctor Who's regeneration gimmick is precisely to let them maintain that the Doctor is still the same person even though they've been around since the 60s and gone through multiple actors. Up until the start of Casino Royale, Bond is/was more like a Marvel Comics character - you're more or less supposed to assume that the events of previous stories broadly happened at some point, BUT deliberately not think about the discrepancies in time period. When Pierce Brosnan's Bond recognises the jetpack from Thunderball, the audience is more-or-less supposed to assume the jetpack scene from Thunderball happened to him, at some point, like, presumably several years ago, and just not worry about the question of when exactly that was and how old that makes him - much like how Iron Man comics still depict him as being maybe pushing 40 at most but the reader is still expected to assume that the famous "building the suit to escape a warzone" plot happened to him more-or-less as shown, and just deliberately not think about the fact that, as originally published, the warzone in question was 1960s Vietnam. The reason people call Casino Royale a reboot is because it - for the first time - explicitly CHANGES how the continuity is meant to work, declaring this to be Bond's first adventure (meaning none of the previous ones happened in ANY form) and setting up a system going forward where every film is supposed to be following on directly from the events of the previous one, exactly as shown (mostly to the series's detriment, so far, so it remains to be seen how long they'll keep trying to make that system work before going back to Comic Book Time Logic).

Baccarat is very much just a more sophistocated Blackjack. That said, the movie does a horrible job with Poker and the entire resolution is basically Bond making an absurdly stupid bet that he gets astronomically lucky with. Baccarat would also be simpler for the audience.

What I’m trying to say is that the argument for every EON film from Dr. No to Die Another Day being its own continuous universe can be made even though it gets pretty messy at times.
@MAMoreno
@MAMoreno 4 жыл бұрын
It certainly grows weaker during the Brosnan era (where the nods to previous Bond eras are typically homages rather than narrative links), but before that point, the continuity is certainly present. * FRWL explcitly references Dr. No, Goldfinger explicitly references FRWL, and Thunderball explicitly references Goldfinger. * TSWLM, FYEO, and Licence to Kill all reference OHMSS quite directly. * LALD features Quarrel Jr. instead of Quarrel to retain continuity with Dr. No. * TMWTGG and Moonraker both bring back a notable supporting character from the previous movie. * General Gogol's behavior in FYEO, Octopussy, AVTAK, and TLD is informed by the events of TSWLM. There are only two places where it gets fuzzy: 1. The relationship between YOLT, OHMSS, and DAF. 2. Dalton's de-aged 007. The first one is largely solved by moving DAF before OHMSS (if that's even necessary) and by assuming that Bond's and Blofeld's disguises in OHMSS are more convincing to everyone in the movie than they are to the audience. The second one is explainable with the old sliding timescale (which also makes room for Brosnan's Bond).
