Priceless in how embarrassing it was. How the head of the secret service shocked that there could be double agents in MI6 ? She wasn't shocked about Vesper and yet she was devastated that her bodyguard that you see for approximately five second was a double. Where is the capable head of intelligence from Die Another Day and Casino Royale ? Why is this ignoramus here ?

@@ricardocantoral7672 Vesper wasn't a MI6 agent. She did not go through the same amount of vetting M's bodyguard did. As to why M is more affected bay a thing happening right next to her than by a thing happening to one of her employees like 1000 kilometers away should be pretty obvious.

The hotel attendant who almost gets raped by the General is played by Oona Chaplin, Charlie's granddaughter, who is probably best known for her role as Talisa in Game of Thrones. She was also in an episode of Black Mirror, the one with Jon Hamm (fantastic episode). Also, I completely missed it the first time, but during the opera scene, one of the Quantum members mentions "the Canadian", which sets up the end of the movie with Corrine. Also, I really love one of M's lines back at the hotel: "I think you're so blinded by inconsolable rage that you don't care who you hurt. When you can't tell your friends from your enemies, it's time to go."

I liked the villain's plans, with the organization having "control all the water" as it's evil scheme. They mention the "Canada Project" at the Opera, which makes sense along those lines. Access to fresh water is important and increasingly threatened, so cornering the market on it in the short (Bolivia) and long (Canada) term makes evil sense.

TBH, I had issues with that in Casino Royal. Bond wins the game, says to Felix "he's all yours", and goes to dinner with Vesper. Enough time then passes for them to have dinner, LeChifre to get to Mathis's phone and organise Vesper's kidnapping and Bond to chase after her and also get kidnapped. Where was Felix and the CIA during this time period? Shouldn't Felix be giving LeChifre the "offer he can't refuse", rather than let him keep roaming around doing villain stuff? Or at the very least have someone tailing him, so he doesn't just try and make a run for it? I always felt Felix fumbled the hand off something vicious there.

I remember with the opening car chase, I decided to play a game to see how long the cuts were on average. You know how you can measure seconds by going "1 one thousand, 2 one thousand, 3 one thousand, ect?" In my head I kept going "1 one- 1 one thous- 1- 1 one tho-1- 1- 1- 1 one-" After getting through the entire opening scene without being able to finish even a single second count in my head, and getting a mild headache, I determined that I was probably not going to like this movie but maybe I would be pleasantly surprised if I stuck it out. *sigh* Well, at least I was right the first time. I was sad you didn't mention some of the best parts with Camile. I liked that in the water cave with Bond, when Bond realises Camile's revenge intention, he unreservedly apologises for 'saving' her when it wasn't wanted. And there is no comment backfrom her undercutting that. Then when Camile gets her revenge, I also think the implication is not just she's trapped physically in a childhood nightmare, but as she's probably spend her whole adult life working towards this revenge, once she gets it, she's also mentally reverted back to childhood. She's got nothing left to live for. Which makes the hand over scene about helping the people later a nice arc. There's the nice if grim scene then when Bond is comforting her just before they escape, but you have to wonder if seeing someone he admired as an equal basically reverting like that once thy got their revenge was the final push for him to not just got for his own revenge? Also, you didn't mention that with the final kiss, Camile has the 'what are you doing' reaction, and Bond is left with the 'wait, isn't this what always happens' reaction when she then pulls away and leaves She's like the first woman aside from M that Bond has had any sort of adult platonic relationship with, and I wish she had been able to come back in that light - as a woman he actually respects as a fellow agent and person who he can't flirt with. A shame for both her and Felix in fact! They both were interesting characters for the Craig Bond.

Regarding the different chases in the film apparently the director wanted to have chase/fight scenes that represented 'the four elements'. So Earth is the car/foot chase at the start. Water is the boat chase. Wind is the plane chase. Fire is the final fight. NO clue AT ALL why he wanted this but...it's a thing that he did...

Re-watching this for the first time since seeing it in the theater in 2006, the benefit of hindsight has helped me to understand what this film was trying to accomplish. It's very different from what we expect from these films, and I get the feeling that Marc Forster's intent. Everything, from the soundtrack to the story and tone, are aiming for something far more emotional and grounded. I personally like the idea that the master plan of the villain is to exploit a suffering people in a single country for financial gain. Green is memorable, because he shows that *anyone* can be the bad guy of someone's story.

I can definitely see the starscape being a selling point that manages to land for the typical snobby image associated with obscenely wealthy people, it gets to be expensive af because it's exclusive. There are probably folks who pay out the nose to travel to Antarctica just to be able to say they're been there, and a location like this essentially has the same appeal. Completely impractical, but an aesthetically pleasing milestone for some.

I was going to knock points off for generic lyrics, but it's rare to get a Bond song that actually relates to the plot of that specific movie. The best we usually get is the typical spy fantasy cliche storm, and at least this is a smooth and energetic one. "Another ringer with the slick trigger finger For Her Majesty Another one with the golden tongue Poisoning your fantasy Another bill from a killer turned a thriller To a tragedy" That's just poetic.

I do give the song points for its lyrics because I agree, it fits the story quite well, and also for the instrumentals. This was the last, truly upbeat Bond theme we got and the slow ballads are starting to sound dull and uninteresting. The only problems i have with the song is Jack and Alicias vocals. To my ears, they absolutely DO NOT match or harmonize well at all.

I'm a big advocate for this flick. I understand it turned out the way it did due to production troubles, and the writers strike, and I'd like my action to be less shaky. But what balls they had to follow-up a reinvention with another stylistically different flick. It's unique in the series, and has an energy unmatched by any other Bond. I know its not what series fans wanted, but I'm more into Bond the character, not Bond the fantasy. Just wish that the opera scene had been the film's equivalent of the card game. You know, something like what we got in Mission Impossible Rogue Nation.
@camerondomer
@camerondomer 4 жыл бұрын
Agreed, a lot of the issues that got brought up are with transitions, secondary characters, and Bond's lack of depth can be put on trying to ram this through during the strike. Better writing could have smoothed the transitions out, given Matthis better, quips, made Ms. Fields more three dimensional, and given Craig more time to work on the motivations for what he's doing rather than the scenes dialogue. Or they could have written a CIA based C plot line that fleshed out a power struggle there.

Just different tastes, I guess. And I'd actually put Die Another Day ahead of this movie because while this movie isn't actively not good like Die Another Day is, at least DAD's badness is somewhat charming. I just remember feeling bored during this film. It was a film that relied too much on being a sequel and a setup at the same time, and it really suffered as not being a great bridge to either. But as always, everyone is entitled to their opinions. I'm glad for the podcast and the entertaining take and memories of one of my favorite movie series. Great listen during work fodder :)

Hard agree on both points. DAD (best acronym) basically is _so_ stupid that it wraps back around to being endearing in a "okay yeah they're trying too hard, but camp has it's own appeal" sort of way. Also as I was listening to You Know My Name I just had that thought like, "I think can see why there are people who don't like this... but I'm not one of them." Meanwhile as I was hearing Another Way to Die: "Did he just namedrop View to a Kill? I have to look up a transcription of these lyrics... okay he didn't, but it's still annoying that I can barely understand most of what's being said here over the bass and we're doing that thing in general with the rhythm of the delivery, I don't know how to describe it but I know when I see it and I don't really like it."

I genuinely like DAD both on its own silly X games terms but also way more than this film. The key difference is that film is like a sugar-rush kid giddy to be a super duper huge Bond film and constantly trips over itself being as enthusiastic as possible, versus this mopey, sullen, boring crap which is almost ashamed to be a Bond film. And as cringe inducing as speed ramping is as an editing technique at least I can make out some coherent geography in the action, whereas this is the absolute ugliest of the Paul Greengrass bastardisations from this time. Quantum makes my Bottom 6 in the Bond rankings - the ones I actually don’t rewatch with any love at all.

Further, I actually find the theme forgettable like you do with Sheryl Crow’s song. But you know what TND has? That brilliant parking garage chase, which is in every way better at selling a story and character.

The only thing I remember about this movie is that it made me fall asleep in the cinema for most of it... I think maybe Bond is on a train around the beginning of it? Or I might be thinking of Skyfall, I'm not sure... I've never gone back and re-watched it. Oh and Bond ends up in a fancy hotel in some kind of desert for some reason? I can't recall...

This was my very first bond movie, and I saw it in theaters. I enjoyed it and felt like I got the james bond vibe but I wasn't driven to check out any of the older movies. Graham & Matt - I think it would be great for you to make - in addition to a numbered list - an Aristotelian “moderation” chart - far to the right of the spectrum is extreme goofy (this gets too silly) far to the left is taking itself too serious (this is not escapist, not fun, and now depressing) while the middle is the perfect balance (whether one prefers that or not) and the higher the movies sit vertically in that spectrum the better they succeed in their apparent goal of style, the lower ones failing more so. I think that might go a long way in relaying where these movies sit, and explain why a chunk of people don’t enjoy the Craig films so much - because they would be much farther left of the spectrum, farther left than License to Kill etc. Always enjoy watching these, thanks!

I stopped my original watch of this series because I hadn't watched Quantum of Solace and wanted to before listening to this episode. Finally on my rewatch of From Rewatch With Love I got to this point again and actually sat down and watched this film for the very first time. I agree with a lot of what Graham and Matt said. I think I need to go and give the theme song a proper listen because it really didn't wow me.

1:13:47 this statement pretty much sums up my feeling on this entire movie. It's just a bit joyless (as the Craig-movies are in general). This also seeps into the title song imo, which lacks energy or the build up of tension. Both artists just feel like they put together something for a paycheck and have done much, much better things individually. Further, a Ford Fiesta isn't even that small of a car and quite common in Europe (where municipal parking spaces are often somewhat smaller).

Yes. It's a hydrogen fuel cell version (as are the SUVs later) hence the unusual electric engine sound and rapid acceleration. Ford were providing most if not all of the vehicles in Bond films at the time. Aston Martin and Jaguar Land Rover were Ford brands at the time and these films are full of them. I wonder if the starring role of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (also Ford here) was a bit of an own-goal in view of the plot-critical perceived volatility of hydrogen fuel cells in the 'hotel'. Surely Ford were not aware of the negative portrayal of the technology before agreeing to provide vehicles.

@24:41. With all due respect to both of you, I have to agree with "Editor Matt" on the title sequence. I saw this in theaters, and I couldn't remember a single thing about it. I mean, it's right at the bottom of my listing for the Bond title themes. I'm not the only one, because in the lead-up to Skyfall being released, I remember listening to a panel on BBC world radio discussing the history of the title themes, and the general sentiment was that this song was the most forgettable one ever.

Wow. After watching/listening to every episode multiple times, I still can't get over how much you guys like Another Way to Die. It's two people shouting at each other with the occasional (admittedly decent) horn riff, genre-switching seemingly at a whim, and ending with a minute of vocal gymnastics. To me, it's literally only better than Die Another Day. To each their own I guess, it's just strange to see two people like it in the same place!

I'm with Editor Matt: I didn't vibe with this title sequence. I think the visuals are interesting, but I have a hard time forming an opinion on them divorced from a song which I do NOT like at all. And as they talk about the song at the end, I'm wondering if I heard the same song as Matt and Graham... I personally didn't like this movie because there was nothing for me to invest in. Afterwards, my feelings were, "Whelp, that happened, I guess?" It felt very unsatisfying. A lot of that is that the plot just kinda...skitters along and the action sequences are mostly unfollowable to me due to a combination of ALWAYS CUTTING TO SOME OTHER THING, WHY?!, shaky cam, the camera being SO CLOSE to its subject that in the brief second the shot lasts I'm just trying to figure out what I am even looking at before it cuts away, and everyone almost always looking too similar to differentiate with those other things going on. This film would've been helped a lot if combatants/chase participants weren't almost always identical looking. Like, maybe try some color or something? I enjoyed this podcast episode, though. :)

This is history repeating itself. Timothy Dalton went through the same thing with License to Kill after the excellent Living Daylights. The difference is that Craig was actually allowed to come back and redeem himself. I don't think he ever quite reached the heights of what Casino Royale was as a complete package, but Skyfall was another excellent Bond film. At least Daylights and License had the same director. The 2 big problems with Quantum are the writing and that there's zero continuity in director. Martin Campbell at least needed to come back and direct this if it's a direct sequel. Bringing in someone else was bad all around. But as 007 has always been a man of his time, I guess a Jason Bourne style movie should have been expected because that was in vogue at the time.

@1:31:40. Okay, I have to be upfront and say this... I don't think that it should really matter that much in the larger picture even if the message is ham-fisted, because it still speaks to a larger issue of suffering. It's the same kind of frustration I feel whenever I hear modern takes on Star Trek 4- this idea that there has to be some proviso about saving the whales, as if we have to quantify the fact that we can just care and empathize with others. To anyone reading this, get out there- make a donation, volunteer a few hours in your local homeless shelter, spend time planting trees, just do something!

This has the dubious honor of being the only movie I have fallen asleep while watching at the theater. Granted I found out the next day I had been coming down with the flu that day, but I remember the car chase being very confusing, being lost as to who Mathis was and confusing him with Mr. White, and then waking up for the EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE glass building and the villain left with a bottle of oil. No idea what happened in between.

Shout out to Matt G (video editor) for (very respectfully and politely) disagreeing with Graham and Matt, as I also share his opinion here about the credits and song, and several other times when watching when he has done this in other videos. No shit on Graham and Matt, but sometimes I feel that they have their own little bubble of opinions (they're long-standing friends who likely share similar tastes and biases) which they (to me) state as if they were absolutes which are not necessarily as strongly held by others. I also stress that they are by no means bad about this compared to others, but they are human and it happens as we all have our own biases, but I find it refreshing to get the additional voice time and again. I have a similar opinion to the Ben/Beej dynamic in the Sidewalk Slam podcasts. Also, I miss the great suit debates of the Moore Era :P

I had completely forgotten the song “Another Way To Die”, which seemed odd because I am a Bond music aficionado. Having just found it on KZbin and listened, I have forgotten it again. It’s so forgettable that it makes me reconsider my ownership of a White Stripes album. I guess there were some songs I liked on Get Behind Me Satan but the style is horribly mismatched to a Bond film: cheap-sounding and chaotic, the opposite of what we have come to expect from Bond opening titles.

I was waiting for this one to see what you thought of the Siena scene. I have a soft spot for it because I was on a family trip to Europe in 2004 and the day we visited Siena happened to be the day of the Palio (we didn't stay for the race, but we saw a lot of the preparation) and that's always stuck with me, so I was just glad to see the Palio in a film. I also like how the church they end the scene in is clearly inspired by the Siena cathedral with the black and white striping. I don't mind the quick cuts as much at the beginning in the sewer because it's in such a tight space, but once they get above ground I find the cuts annoying. I also keep thinking the Siena scene is the pre-title sequence because I apparently just wiped the actual one from my memory it's so bad. That said, the Siena scene and the title sequence are basically the only bits from the movie I'll go back and watch.
