Reboot, along with Detroit Public Theatre and Detroit Public Television, invites you for a pre-Halloween event, Erev Halloween if you will, to celebrate the most famous Jewish monster, the Golem, its history and contemporary lessons, at a festival of music, film, conversation and art. This interactive experience will be hosted in Detroit - a premier event for Reboot’s local art and culture programming.
The event will feature author Adam Mansbach, who skyrocketed to fame after the publication of the #1 New York Times bestselling pseudo-children’s book Go the F*ck to Sleep, and Dr. Justin Sledge, Detroit-based professor of Ethics, Religion, and Social-Political Philosophy with an emphasis on Jewish esotericism and the occult.
This fall, Mansbach published his fifth novel, The Golem of Brooklyn (One World, an imprint of Penguin Random House, September 2023) - a ferociously funny reimagining of the golem of Jewish folklore, who is accidentally brought to life in a basement apartment in Brooklyn and embarks on an absurd road trip to face off against the rising threat of antisemitism in America. In a conversation moderated by Angelique Power, president & CEO of The Skillman Foundation, Mansbach and Dr. Sledge will discuss the historical and contemporary connection between the legend of the golem and Jewish links between the supernatural, creativity and tikkun olam (repairing the world).
The evening will feature a variety of creative mediums. This includes Detroit artists Olivia Guterson and Faina Lerman manifesting Jewish monsters with a live painting installation, along with a digital art collection by Lynne Avadenka displayed for viewers. Excerpts of the newly remastered 1921 classic film The Golem: How He Came into This World will also be premiered along with Reboot’s new vinyl release of an original film score. The score was created in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the commercial release of Paul Wegener’s silent horror classic and features world class (and local Detroit) artists such as Alan Licht, Gretchen Gonzales, Rebecca Odes, John Olson, Nate Young, Sharon Gal, ∈Y∋, Scott Amendola, Steve Berlin (Los Lobos), and Steven Drozd (Flaming Lips).
This conversation on “The Golem of Brooklyn” was produced by Reboot in cooperation with PBS Books, which recorded and made it available for viewing on KZbin and other digital channels.

I've always found the concept of a Golem interesting for at least one reason: In temple (i.e., OT ) Judaism, the Jewish people were always saved by the hand of God - God would either smite or raise up a warrior / leader; and eventually the Messiah would arrive from God who would be the Savior of Israel. The Golem indicates a transition where man becomes god-like in that he raises his own warrior and does so from mud just as God created Adam. I'm not sure if this indicates a shift in theology or culture (or even anything at all), but I find it interesting to think about.

So much fun to see you interact with your audience. Your humor shines through. Also, the terror of some of these subjects do, too. You are willing to make your audience uncomfortable if it means speaking of uncomfortable things that are always there and isually ignored. I love that more than anything, even the humor. Keep pushing all of our boundaries, please. And keep on working with these brilliant and hilarious minds!

Detroit has had such a rich cultural community. Thank you for sharing this. I just watched The Limehouse Golem, who is FEMALE. FEMALES FEMALES FEMALES, religious, society's scapegoats, that still persists. Ah, misogyny, the fulcrum from which half the planet is demonized, minimized still today. I have ordered this book. I think tradition must be understood, made better, including more. As a cup of tea is shared in any village, continent, the sharing is fundamental.

I really like your conversations with other speakers, here and on the recent stream with Genetically Modified Skeptic. I don't know if it's something you'd want to do a lot [nerding-out over an obscure interest is often a solitary pursuit], but you're definitely good at it. Thanks. This also had me thinking about the ethical dilemmas around AI, but I can't say if that has anything to do with real AI, or the cultural baggage of cyberpunk fiction and movies like `The Terminator', `Blade Runner', etc.

If Golem was executed in Babyn Yar in 1941, then he certainly made a comeback almost exactly 2 decades later in 1961, in a liquid form, when tons of liquid CLAY (!!!) pulp broke the dam of a brick factory's reservoir near Babyn Yar, and spilled into Kurenivka below, burying thousands alive, as if a vengeful spirit trapped in clay broke out and went on a rampage, no longer having a master to obey and blindly raging through the city.

Ok. I bought the shirt and I've tipped and now I have to join the Patreon and probably upgrade until eventually... if I was circumcised as a baby, do I have to do second one if I convert? Is there a separate tier for that? I am really fascinated by this idea of a soul recirculating, but if it requires a second snip, that could be a deal-breaker.

@@EricVanWinkle My understanding is that typically a small amount of blood is drawn (think diabetes finger prick if that's helpful) as a symbolic equivalent to the circumcision, but in general, I'd defer to the answer Dr Sledge gave. For more specific advice, I'd ask if they offer any open learning sessions you could sign up for as a start, and see where that takes you.

This is a very good sounding read, think I will look up where I can get this book in Australia. Hopefully the library will have it! It is quite relevant to current affairs also. Did I hear a word for truth - Emet? Sounds a little close to Ma'at, the ancient Egyptian word/goddess. So, its really sad that the golem believes there is always crisis in the world and can't fix people, maybe I'm a golem, that seems to be close to my mindset, though I do see some good in the people of the world, I don't know if the world will ever improve. You are restoring my faith in Jewish people and Judaism. You are wonderful people. I love the wisdom of the stories in the Jewish holy books, Justin explained it really well, is he a secret rabbi? BTW, you are so right about trauma but it really is in our DNA, so human.....
