Carla, thanks for sharing your ideas. I have been reborning for several years but have always used heat set paints. and I am trying to learn about acrylics and have already picked up some good tips from you. I love hair painting and you said you were going to try painting hair. If you need any tips I would be glad to help.

Thank you so much Teresa for the offer to help with painted hair tips. One of my next doll kits I work on might just be a painted hair doll...and if so, I will definitely be asking you for advice and tips! :) I bet your dolls you made with Genesis are beautiful...and if you do venture into trying acrylics for your dolls sometime, I think you will be pleased with the results of those too! Hugs friend, Carla :)

Congratulations on getting ready to paint your first reborn doll...I hope you have great fun with the process...and love the baby when you finish! Here's a bit more info that I went into more detail with for another commenter...I hope this will be of help to you as well: (This is NOT the same as Folk Art Glass and Tile Medium...which is my preferred medium. However, I did use this matte medium as a sealer on a few dolls...but only used it sparingly...and in equal, small amounts with paint and Mod Podge...or with paint and Folk Art Glass And Tile Medium. And I thinned down this mixture with distilled water to an almost transparent quality (very light in color) to paint the layers. (Painting this way will allow each layer to air dry totally before starting with the first vinyl piece again. And don't worry that you don't see alot of color at first...that's the effect you want to achieve...subtle layers of color. Also as additional information that I've discovered since making this video in 2016: My preferred sealer I now use to add to my paint "mixture" is now Delta Creative Ceramcoat All Purpose Sealer. But to actually "seal" my dolls when painting of layers is completed...I use DecoArt Americana Decor Ultra Matte Varnish that I get in the craft paint section at Hobby Lobby. (It comes in a tub and can seal 3 to 5 dolls depending on size of doll and how many coats are applied). I apply 1 coat undiluted and sponged on if I want the "skin" to have texture...or 2 coats diluted (about 1 part water to 1 part Ultra Matte Varnish) and sponged on if I want the "skin" to be smooth. Then after the final sealing coat (or coats) dry overnight...I then apply Folk Art Artist's Varnish Gloss to nails, lips, nostrils and inner and outer corners of eyes for that moist/wet look. (I've tried others for this final step, but this particular gloss is the best I've ever used). " Good luck with your reborn painting! :)

Well thank you friend for watching and leaving me your nice comment! I really do appreciate you taking the time to do that. Before I started painting reborns a couple of years ago, my only other attempt at painting ANYTHING had been a canvas that I had gotten as a gift one Christmas...a lampshade...and a mailbox! I am definitely in no way "trained"...but I just had an "interest" in stretching myself and seeing if I might be able to do this wonderful art myself. I bet if you ever do decide to try to paint a reborn you would be amazed how well your creation would turn out! And like we all know...the more we do...we learn tips and techniques that work specifically for us...and you will grow with each doll you do! If you ever do try a doll, I would love to see it! Hugs Hon and take care! Carla :)

I bought everything to start reborning but it stressed me out just thinking about trying so I sent my paint and supplies to Kimber and Kathy to use. I was told by a famous painter in our area that I did not have talent for painting
@carlacarmichael2978
@carlacarmichael2978 8 жыл бұрын
That was so wrong for that painter to say that to you! :( We ALL are given a spark of creativity...it's ours to develop...or harness...if we choose to. And painting on a flat surface, like a canvas, is way different from painting on a fluid form and shape like reborn doll vinyl parts. I think you would really enjoy...and do a really good job at trying your hand at reborning. Vinyl is very "forgiving"...if you make a mistake, or you don't like the direction your painting is taking, you can strip the whole kit down with 100 % Acetone Nail Polish Remover, wash and dry it...and begin again! I really hope that if you still have that "spark" of interest in you, that you DO try reborning for yourself. This is just such an enjoyable hobby...and allows us to stretch the limits of our imaginations...it would be a shame for you to not experience it for yourself. Hugs, Carla

I didn't like that acrylic medium for reborning... It didn't work well for me but maybe it will if you mix it with other sealants?
@carlacarmichael2978
@carlacarmichael2978 8 жыл бұрын
Hi...I DID mix this with the other sealants with my paint. Just a dime-sized amount of this matt...along with the paint, water, sealant, and Mod Podge or Folk Art Glass and Tile Medium. I found this matt...mixed in such a small amount with the other parts of my mixture...did lend a bit of matt to each layer of paint. But yes...I wouldn't use this as a final sealer...or in too heavy doses...for reborning. Thanks for the info and input...I'm sure you helped others with them! Hugs, Carla :)

Hi Carla I'm already using acrylic paints just wondering if you use the acrilyc Matt with the folk art glass and tile medium together as of right now that's all I have been using with my paints is the glass and tile mediums with each layer of paint I use that ,just wanted to get your thoughts on that thanks
@carlacarmichael2978
@carlacarmichael2978 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Debbie! No...right now I don't have any of the Folk Art Glass and Tile Medium, so I am using a mixture of paint, water, Mod Podge (in Matte, not Gloss), Sealer, and a bit of Ultra Matte Varnish for each paint color I mix up and make to use. (My preferred way is using ONLY the paint, Folk Art Glass and Tile Medium, and water...but when I run out of the Glass and Tile Medium, I make my own concoction up...like I described above). That is why I went ahead and bought this acrylic Matt when I saw it...as a higher quality alternative to the Mod Podge I've been using when I'm making up my "alternative" mixture. You are doing fine just as you are...as long as you have the Glass and Tile Medium you don't really need to add these other things I mentioned. (I have on occasion though added a drop or two of sealer...and the ultra matte varnish, if I felt the vinyl wasn't accepting the paint layers...or if the layers were getting shiny on me.) But I really ONLY use this alternative mixture when I'm out of the Folk Art Glass and Tile Medium. Thanks for the question...and hope my long-winded answer doesn't confuse you. Hugs, Carla :)

How would I seal the paint after painting ??? Does it rub off? I really want to do my first doll
@carlacarmichael2978
@carlacarmichael2978 7 жыл бұрын
If you seal acrylic paints properly, the paint doesn't rub off. Here is how I "seal" and finish my reborn dolls: I use Americana Decor Ultra Matte Varnish...sold by Hobby Lobby in their craft paint section. (Down near the chalk paints...and special effect craft paints). It comes in an 8 ounce plastic "tub"-like container and here in Alabama the cost is $9.99. (But I always use Hobby Lobby's 40 percent off coupon that you can access on-line at their website, and the cost ends up being 6 dollars and change. And that tub can seal 4 to 5 reborns (depending on doll size and how many coats you use)...so it really is an economical purchase. And it's the best I have found so far...and others that I have shared the info with...and have tried it themselves...let me know that it worked great for them also. (And if I want textured skin on my finished doll, I pounce with a sponge (1) coat straight from the container...and if I want a smooth complexion, I do (2) coats...but each is diluted about 1/2 water and 1/2 product...again pouncing on with a sponge. Let dry overnight (or bake in a NuWave oven...or a regular oven ONLY USED FOR VINYL DOLL PARTS...NOT FOR COOKING!!! and then gloss nails and facial features that you want to gloss...and your painting will be done at that point! :)

The only sealer I use anymore is DecoArt Americana Decor Ultra-Matte Varnish that I purchase from Hobby Lobby. In comes in an 8 fluid ounce tube that runs $9.99 in my area of the country. but I always use their 40% off coupon when I buy this item...bringing the price down to about $6.50. This tub is enough to matte-seal 3 to 5 reborns...depending on the size of doll...and whether you dilute the varnish 50/50 with water...or if you use it full-strength to give the vinyl parts some "texture".

Hello there , excellent advice here. I'm.preparing to reborn my own baby. I am.really excited but more nervous as I am a protectionist. I have watched many videos and taken as many tips as possible. I have the Walmart acrylic medium to mix with acrylic paint and distilled water. What is the best 2ay of mixing these 3 products together? Should it be milky with lil bit of the medium and lil bits of the paints? I also have Americana duraclea glass varnish and the matte varnish for the sealant and for the nails ect.

Fantastic video, thank you so much. I have a question....how do you get a more dull look instead of the shiny look while using air dry paints. As I do want the glow I'm not happy with such a shine except of course on the moist areas. And ideas about this? Thank you 😊

I now use Americana Ultra Matte Varnish from Hobby Lobby to use for my final 1 or 2 pounced on coats to complete my dolls. For a smooth finish to the skin, I dilute with water (about half and half) and pounce on 2 coats. To give texture to the skin...I don't dilute...and pounce on 1 coat only using a sea sponge or mottling cosmetic wedge. This product is amazing...and is formulated to be used with acrylic and chalk paints...and gives an absolute matte finish to your baby. It is found in the craft paint section at Hobby Lobby...about the middle of the aisle where the "specialty" paints are found...and comes in an 8 ounce tub/container. Here in Alabama, it costs $9.99, but I always pull up their 40 percent off coupon from their website and apply that to the price which takes 3-something off of the price. And this "tub" will finish approximately 3-5 dolls...depending on the size of the doll...so it is a really good bargain, in my opinion. I've pointed others here on KZbin to this product and they have had excellent results with it on their dolls as well. Hope this helps...Carla :)

Hi...thank you so much for your question. By the time I paint all 5 vinyl parts (head and limbs) I can immediately start with the next painted layer on the first piece and continue through the rotation that way for each paint layer. (I'm going to include a more detailed description of what I use and how I use it here...the mixing of paint and additives to a very thin, nearly transparent quality is similar to the way Genesis paints are mixed, I think...) ____________________________________________________________________________ This is a bit more detail that I wrote to another person that had a similar question ...I think it will give the more detailed explanation that might help you. My preferred fixative is Folk Art Glass and Tile Medium and when I have that, I will use for example a dime-sized drop of paint...and the same sized drop of glass and tile medium...and the same sized drop of multi-purpose sealer...mixed well together...then thinned with distilled water to a very thin and watery consistency. But when Folk Art Glass and Tile Medium is not available (like when I've run out or new product hasn't arrived yet) I use some of these products instead...for example, in that case, I would use a dime-sized drop of paint...then a dime-sized drop of Mod Podge (or now I'm going to try the new Matt product I just found at Walmart)...then a dime-sized drop of Ultra Matte Varnish...then a dime-sized drop of multi-purpose sealer...and again mixed well together ...then thinned with distilled water to a very thin and watery consistency. After painting all of the coats of paint I want to do on my doll, I would finish with 1...if not 2...coats of Americana Ultra Matte Varnish from Hobby Lobby) to give the doll a very nice matte finish. Then finally, I would use the Folk Art's Artist's Varnish Gloss to gloss the nails (both toes and fingers), lips, inside of nose (if shaded), ears folds, and inner and outer corners of the eye. That is just the way of painting that has worked for me. I hope this helps and I think that if you do try using acrylics, you will be pleased with the results you get. Hugs Carla...and thank you so much for watching and your interest and comment! :)

Hi can I ask what you are using on your vinyl before you paint please
@carlacarmichael2978
@carlacarmichael2978 8 жыл бұрын
I only prep my vinyl with warm, soapy water, rinse well and let air dry before painting. I know some people totally coat their vinyl with Folk Art Glass and Tile Medium BEFORE beginning their painting. I've always added the Tile Medium (or Mod Podge and a Sealer if I've run out of Tile Medium) to each paint color that I mix. So, in essence, I am adding sealer and fixative to every coat I paint.

It's never a bother. Feel free to ask me anytime. The color wheel is a bit tricky to use...but the way I understand it is find the color you want to make...and use the colors on the opposite side of the wheel to achieve that color. Or better yet...Google in the search bar "how to use a color wheel to mix paint"...and you will get some expert advice from that search...I'm sure. Hugs, Carla :)

Carla I have another question I'm hoping you might be able to help me with ,after I paint my babies I have noticed that some of them will get a scratch on them if I'm not careful I add the glass and tile sealant to every coat of paint ,give that coat time to dry before applying the next coat I just wondered if you might had that to happen to you maybe I'm not waiting long enough between coats or not enough tile and glass sealer ,and when the doll is finished should I go all over it real good with this tile and glass seal and before I list it I wouldn't want that to happen after I've sold one no complaints so far but I don't want there to be any can you help

Hi Debbie...I'm sorry to hear about any scratching you are having. I haven't personally had that happen to mine. You sound like you are mixing your paint and sealant together fine...and sounds like you are letting each coat dry before applying the next coat. I never went over the finished doll with the Folkart Glass and Tile Medium...I only used that mixed in with each color I was using. For my finished doll...I used a Matte Varnish (1 or 2 coats...your preference)...(and the Ultra Matte Varnish I use is from Hobby Lobby...back by the craft paints...it comes in an 8 ounce tub and the name is Americana Decor Ultra Matte Varnish. The tub costs $9.99 here in Alabama...but I can complete 4-5 dolls...so figuring that in...it really is an economical purchase. I let each layer of Matte Varnish dry completely...sometimes overnight...or throughout the day. And then I can go back in and gloss where I want to...nails, nostrils, corners of eyes, inside of ears. Then let that dry thoroughly before putting doll together. Like I said...I haven't had the scratch problem you are mentioning. I really think the Ultra Matte Sealer at the end will eliminate any problem like that (and will take away any shine from the babies!)...as well as making sure each layer and especially the final layers are allowed to dry totally. (And after you root hair...or "handle" the baby...you can pounce on a tiny bit of the Matte Varnish to any spot that might get shiny again while working with your doll...and it will become matte again. I hope this helps Hon. Hugs, Carla

Hi again do you know I had a bottle of distilled water for a year now and I used just a little of it same thing with the folk art medium do you think I should throw them out and use new ?
@carlacarmichael2978
@carlacarmichael2978 8 жыл бұрын
No...distilled water is just water that has had the chemicals and minerals removed. For the purposes of mixing with paint...I don't think it would be bad to use older distilled water.

Can you bake acrylic to seal???
@carlacarmichael2978
@carlacarmichael2978 7 жыл бұрын
Yes...I use a NuWave oven set at 260 degrees for 11 minutes. Others use a higher temp and shorter time (about 8 minutes)...but I have had no problem with the vinyl becoming "shiny" the way I've been baking...and others-at higher temps and shorter times-have reported their kit pieces become shiny.

I mix a dab into the paint, along with the other additives. Not too much...just a dab into each color I use.

I use Mod Podge...along with a sealer...added to my paint...and thinned with water to paint each layer. (I use Mod Podge when I've run out of Folk Art Glass and Tile Medium).

Hello...!!! I'm about to purchase these paints from Walmart; Do you need to mix them with water to help paint with them..?And you use a Medium...?
@carlacarmichael2978
@carlacarmichael2978 7 жыл бұрын
Hi...yes I do use a medium...FolkArt Glass and Tile Medium...when I have it...and a few other things that I use as substitutes for that when I run out. (I will include an earlier response that I posted on another video that gives in more detail how I mix my paints.) And that box of paint from Walmart is excellent acrylic paints...highly pigmented...and I have painted several dolls with those paints, and was very pleased with the results they gave me. Thank you for watching and taking time to comment and ask your questions. Hope my answers help you. :) Carla __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ My preferred fixative is Folk Art Glass and Tile Medium and when I have that, I will use for example a dime-sized drop of paint...and the same sized drop of glass and tile medium...and the same sized drop of multi-purpose sealer and then thin with water to very thin...water color consistancy. If I'm out of Folk Art Glass and Tile Medium, I use mod podge, matte varnish, multipurpose sealer and paint...(mix dime-sized amounts of each)...and then thin with water to very thin...water color consistancy. Let each coat dry thoroughly before starting the next...but since you are applying such thin coats...usually by the time you finish the head and all 4 limbs, you can start the next coat on the first piece again, and continue on building up layers of flesh, mottling and blushing as you go. After all of my painting is completed (but before glossing lips, nails or other glossed areas) I pounce on 2 coats of Americana Ultra Matte Varnish (found at Hobby Lobby) that have been thinned to about half water/half matte varnish. Let each varnish coat dry completely (preferably overnight) before applying the next coat. I pounce this mixture on with cosmetic sponges or a sea sponge...depending on the effect I want. This gives a smooth complexion to your baby. If you want "textured" skin...increase the amount of matte varnish and decrease the amount of water in the mixture. When these layers are all dry, THEN you can gloss the areas of your doll that you want to gloss.

Hi...and welcome! I've used Apple Barrel paint as well as Folkart and other acrylic craft paints...and they have worked fine for me. (As long as you use Folk Art Glass and Tile Medium with it...and seal with ultra-matte varnish at the end.) I have only ever used acrylic craft paints...I've never used the Genesis heat set paints...for a variety of reasons...and have always had good results. Thanks for watching, and subbing...I appreciate you being there! Hugs, Carla :)

I use Americana Decor Ultra Matte Varnish...sold by Hobby Lobby in their craft paint section. Let dry overnight and then gloss nails and facial features that you want to gloss...and your painting will be done at that point! :)

Hi...thanks for watching and asking. I DID use them...in fact, I used them up totally between reborning dolls and making crafts! They are wonderful paints...very highly pigmented...not watered down...and great consistency of color. I definitely recommend them...I think if you try them, you will like them too! :)

Thank you soo much for your help i have been into reborns for 4 years now and have always wanted to paint a reborn. But everytime i watched airdry reborning videos they only mentioned the matt varnish from boutiful baby wich you have to bake but the oven is not in my budjet. Now that i know i can paint with completely air dry paints i am very excited altho i find it hard to get everything that i need together i found this kit at my walmart and i think it has every color i need and i also found the same simply acrylic matt at walmart and paintbrushes and such but apart from that i am not sure what else i need?

No, I don't but I've given some basic information in comment form on my videos. Here it is from a while back...(I've since changed the Matte Varnish I use to Americana Decor Ultra Matte Varnish from Hobby Lobby...it is the best matte varnish for acrylic paints that I have ever used.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here's an explanation I wrote earlier to another person...I think it will give the more detailed explanation you wanted. (And I don't alternate sealers for each layer.) My preferred fixative is Folk Art Glass and Tile Medium and when I have that, I will use for example a dime-sized drop of paint...and the same sized drop of glass and tile medium...and the same sized drop of multi-purpose sealer...mixed well together...then thinned with distilled water to a very thin and watery consistency. But when Folk Art Glass and Tile Medium is not available (like when I've run out or new product hasn't arrived yet) I use some of these products instead...for example, in that case, I would use a dime-sized drop of paint...then a dime-sized drop of Mod Podge...then a dime-sized drop of Matte Varnish...then a dime-sized drop of multi-purpose sealer...and again mixed well together ...then thinned with distilled water to a very thin and watery consistency. After painting all of the coats of paint I want to do on my doll, I would finish with 1...if not 2...coats of the Dura Clear Ultra Matte Varnish to give the doll a very nice matte finish. (One coat if not diluted with water...two coats if I dilute with water. Diluted...the complexion is smoother...not diluted...the complexion has some texture to it. (And I pounce the ultra matte varnish on with a sea sponge wedge (I cut the wedge myself) Then finally, I use the Folk Art's Artist's Varnish Gloss to gloss the nails (both toes and fingers), lips, inside of nose (if shaded), folds of ears and inner and outer corners of the eye. Hugs, Carla...and good luck with your reborning! (I hope this information helps you out a bit. :)

Why do you paint the undersides of her hands the same as her skin tone? Black people don't have black hands or feet on the underside.

Hi...thanks for watching and taking time to comment. This particular doll is the Jasmine at 1 1/2 from Ashton Drake...and I didn't paint her...her skin tone is the way she came from Ashton Drake and her commercial manufacturer.

Hi...the Folkart Glass & Tile Medium is what I prefer to use. The matt medium shown in this video...I only ended up using in ADDITION to other sealers for specific painting techniques...not for total painting on my dolls.
