Thank u for making this video, I'm working on my first reborn, so I needed to know what colors to layer with to get the beautiful tones, very appreciative.
@lifewithsharonb51382 жыл бұрын
Yes, layering is very important. After flesh tone, you can add a little bit of red/purple to the flesh to give it more life; if too red, add some yellows; if too peach or yellow add some purples or blues. It's important to look at each layer and compare with your own skin tone, too. Different ethnic groups have different tones - I'm sure you already know that! I prefer blue/purple undertones to peach undertones myself. Good luck and let me know how your first doll turns out!

It's very relaxing and informative. Basically you go with very "subtle" layers (very diluted colors), starting with a skin color that you keep perfecting with the neutrilizing/warming laser and in beetwin you add details as veins "mottling" (spell correct?? ) frackles..i am in love with the yellow on the nose.
@lifewithsharonb51384 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I add blue (subtly) at the bridge of the nose and on the sides of the lower nose also on the inside ankle bone area and in the center of the bottom of the foot. Blue needs to be added very carefully because it is difficult to correct if it's too dark. I add purple (thin, watery layer) where baby's skin is thinner like the crease on the inside of the knee. I mix blue with purple and put it on the bulb of the thumb on the underside. I sometimes dab a little bit of this color above the eyebrows too. I will add a hint of yellow on the upper forehead just under the hairline in the front, too.

Thank you so much for this video. Do you have a list of your essential colors that you use. At the end when you said you baked her do you actually put her in the oven? Or how does that work? Essential colors are flesh, reds, purples, pinks, peach, blue, yellow, mint green, and browns. You can use Folk Art Outdoor Sealer (matte) as a final coat to prevent shiny-ness. You don't need to bake acrylic paints, only Genesis heat set paints, and then use a Nu-wave oven with the extender ring, never use a kitchen oven as fumes are toxic. Hope this helps!

Hello Sharon I am practising air dry painting and am having a go at painting hair as well . What do you use if you make a mistake and you want to remove some to re-do it? Thanks Sharon from Julie 🥰👍Your videos helped me make my mind up to use air dry paints so you have already been very helpful and Clover is gorgeous 🧡💜💛❤️💚💙
@lifewithsharonb51385 жыл бұрын
Hi Julie. Try using rubbing alcohol mixed with water. If that doesn't work, try just rubbing alcohol, but it will remove a LOT! If you want to start conservatively, just use a little Dawn dishwashing liquid mixed with hot water. Then add some rubbing alcohol with water and take it from there. If you want to remove everything down to the bare vinyl, then you will need paint remover, which has a horrid smell, or nail polish remover, which also has a horrid smell. Hope this helps a little. Good luck! Sharon

You can use the glass & tile medium as a seal coat; however, it is difficult to master and requires multiple applications. You need to keep using a new cosmetic wedge, as the medium will become saturated on the sponge and not give you the desired "matte". You should also keep washing your mop brush in between applications, because the medium will "collect" on your brush and make globs stick on your vinyl. You will eventually get the hang of it. I have even successfully baked the doll with just the acrylic paint and glass & tile medium on it - I hope this was helpful. Sharon x0x0

What a beautiful baby you have created! Thank you so much for sharing your process. You are very talented and the obvious pleasure that you have from what you do comes out in your videos. :) I have a doll that has a shiny look to her skin instead of the flat matt that I'd like her to have. Especially on her face. Do you have any suggestions as to how I could take the shine away?
@lifewithsharonb51387 жыл бұрын
I use Genesis Thinning Medium applied with a mop brush on a cosmetic wedge that has the top ripped off to create texture. I bake in my nu-wave oven at power level 6 for 10 minutes, wait for the vinyl to cool and re-bake. You can use Plaid Folk Art Glass & Tile Medium applied and pounced with a cosmetic wedge as well (if you don't want to bake). This take some practice and requires a few coats. This product is available at Joann's fabrics, or ebay, or directly from plaid folk art's website.
@777coppertop7 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your quick reply! I already have some of the Glass & Tile Medium on it's way to me in the mail right now! So I guess that's what I'll try first. :) Can the Genesis Thinning Medium be used after having applied the Glass & Tile Medium if it doesn't "matt it down" enough? Also, I don't have a nu-wave oven. Just a regular one in my kitchen. Can I use that and what heat would you suggest?
@lifewithsharonb51387 жыл бұрын
When you use the glass & tile medium, you need to stir it really well with a wooden craft stick, because the thick part rests at the bottom, and that's the part you really want. Yes, you can use the thinning medium on top of the glass & tile medium. I would not use an oven in my home, as the fumes will go throughout your house and they are not safe. I only bake in my portable oven either outside when the weather cooperates or in my garage. You can google what temp to bake your kit. I actually don't remember. I put my nu-wave oven on power level 6 for 10 minutes. Wait for the vinyl to cool, and re-bake.

Do you bake you doll when you use acrylics? If so how many times? every layer? I have a Nuwave oven so How long do I bake the doll per layer and what setting do I use? Maybe you could do a video on baking with Acrylic. Is Heat set paint steps the same as Acrylic sets?
@lifewithsharonb51387 жыл бұрын
I only bake at the end. I use Genesis thinning medium as my final coat. I bake twice - I wait for the vinyl to cool first and then re-bake. I use power level 6 (which I believe is 250 deg.) for 10 minutes. My Nu-Wave oven has the extender ring so that the heating element is further away from the vinyl which are on top of a soft towel. Genesis paints are oil based and MUST be baked. Acrylic paints are water based and do not have to be baked. The final step that I bake makes them "matte", and slightly textured. I do it to make the paints more durable. Hope this helps. Sharon

Happy Sunday, Dear Sharon, l have watched your video thousands of times, and finally I have received my kit! I am going to be painting her entirely with air dry paint. I washed her with water and then I have been trying to neutralise her, by adding turquoise, distilled water and the blending gel (folkart) and after the second coat, there is no difference at all! Should I have given a base coat with the gel first? 💕Thank you very much 💕
@lifewithsharonb51384 жыл бұрын
Neutralizing - is the kit too orange? I'm assuming so if you are using a blue/green color. These layers should not be too heavy - they should be a 'wash', so maybe just continue with your next layer of color - flesh color maybe? I have not used blending gel. Are you using the glass & tile medium or outdoor sealer by Folk Art? If not, maybe that could be why it's not visible?

do u have to use a nuwave oven to set the paint
@lifewithsharonb51387 жыл бұрын
Not unless you use a Genesis product. Then you don't have to bake at all. But if you do want to bake, I like the Nu-Wave oven for its portability and safety. You can get one with an extender ring (very important) on ebay for about fifty bucks!

Do you seal the paints once you are finished, or not? I see you used acrylics, do you ever use Genesis Heat Set paints? Beautiful job!
@lifewithsharonb51385 жыл бұрын
I now use Genesis and seal with their matte varnish. I sealed my acrylic babies with glass & tile medium and sometimes even Genesis matte varnish and baked them.

It's available on ebay. Just search for Folk Art Outdoor Matte Sealer.

Hi there I know this video is 2017 so I am hoping you can help me- but I cannot find the glass and tile medium by plaid... is there another kind I can use that will work the same? Thanks and thank you for these great videos, they are very helpful.

Someone commented on one of my videos that they found a product that worked for them. I unfortunately didn't write it down. It was some kind of an acrylic matte finish product. I will try and look for it and comment again.

You are so helpful! I want to try this so bad, but I’m too afraid! I am crafty and I am proficient at several crafts, but I am not an artist. Is there a kit that would be best for a TRUE beginner to start with? Can most errors be corrected? Your babies are so beautiful! I am envious!!! 💕

Purchase a soft vinyl doll from Wal-Mart. Purchase some Folk Art matte acrylic paints at a craft store along with a few brushes. Purchase Folk Art glass & tile medium or Folk Art Outdoor sealer from their website or ebay. Mix the paint, water, and medium and paint away! Use thin watery layers and build. Get reds, blues, yellow, mint green, flesh, and off white. Get cosmetic sponge wedges to apply the paint. Make sure they aren't infused with Vitamin E. Walmart's sometimes are. Good luck! It's only paint and acrylics can be wiped off if you don't like the result.

i am so scared because i am afraid of failing because i so badly want to be good at this. This video taught me allot and i saw how you explained in another video how to learn with acrylic. If i get confident with this i am going to use air dry paints as i am not able to do heat genesis. What was is like for you when you first started?
@lifewithsharonb51385 жыл бұрын
I started with an inexpensive Wal Mart doll just for kicks. She turned out so well, and I learned what colors not to use, and what colors to use very thinly, and everything went from there! You get better with each doll. Just go slow, work in good lighting, use thin, watery layers, and examine your work as you go along. It's only paint. Don't be nervous! You can wipe it off right away before it dries if you're not happy with the color or the depth of color, and you can always go over it if it is too light. Good luck. Glad I am able to help. Sharon

@lifewithsharonb51385 жыл бұрын
You don't need to bake air dry paints. I sometimes seal the vinyl with genesis matte varnish which does need to be baked. You can use air dry varnish which doesn't require baking. I recommend Folk Art Outdoor Sealer (matte) or glass & tile medium.

I baked her at the end with Genesis Thinning Medium applied with a cosmetic sponge with the top ripped off for texture. I baked twice - after it cooled I did it again for 11 minutes. I use a Nu-Wave portable convection oven and do not use it inside my home. Hope this helps. Sharon
