Nice shop! I was going to recommend getting that lathe indoors and buying a couple gallons of Evaporust, I’m glad I didn’t say anything after seeing his shop. His tools are well taken care of, it looks like Don had some competition on clean machines. All of equipment looks great and the perfect selection too! That man does nice work on everything I saw, I might copy that collet rack but mine will be a bit smaller, same with my drill bit collection. Lol. That drill bit collection is crazy! Thanks for sharing

Very nice shop and the South Bend is worth rebuilding. My dad and I bought a 1942 13" with a shorter bed about 40 years ago at a school auction and he did many projects with it over the years. Great machines that are friendly to use.

My Dad was a Tool & Die Maker in Milwaukee and bought equipment from Voell Machinery, which is what the label indicates on this South Bend.

What a nice shop he’s got there! I wish I had more room because I’d like to get a surface grinder next. I found one in great shape that probably would’ve fit next to my tire machine but I’d loose a bunch of room to work on my race car. I love my Clausing 14x40 with absolutely no wear! It was hardly used but somehow they lost the follow rest. The steady looks like it was used once or twice though. But anyway I’d like to see a video when it comes time to use the pantograph

One of my projects I made that came out really good was a pipe bender. I was gonna built my own set of 1-7/8” headers for my car. I ordered the pipe and it kept kinking. It turns out they have to be mandrel bent unless I went with a really thick wall but they’d be to heavy. At least I can do my roll cage when it’s time.

Wow what a friggin awesome shop!! That Southbend will be up and running I've no doubt now he just needs a lathe long enough to screwcut a new leadscrew for it! And to think that I'm working in an insulated garden shed with the external dimensions of 8 feet by 6.5 feet lol

At 18:35, a big red or yellow flag could be attached to make the tool "Highly Visible". Maybe a cord or cable to attach to a different cover that absolutely must and will be removed before flight, Maybe a pitot tube cover or wheel chock, or fuel cap?

Those bearings will be cast into the headstock and bearing caps. That's a pretty old lathe. Worth saving it, but will take some effort and time. I don't believe the ways were scraped on these machines.

I have the same model with the 7-foot bed. It has a cast aluminium cover for the back gear knob if I recall. If it does I might be able to 3D scan it so someone could cast some replicas. It does have a cast iron chip pan and threading dial, so lucky me! Nowhere nearly as rusty (no pockmarks!), but still in need of restoration, with similar wear on the ways. The only damage seems to be some damaged teeth on the rear of the wide lead screw gear at the back. It was provided to New Zealand by the US government as part of its support for the war effort in the early part of WW2. Up by the serial number there are several stamps that show that it had government inspections before being sent out. I haven't been able to check the serial number yet because the silly Grizzly site won't let me buy one. Not sure if it's because I'm outside the US, or because Grizzly just hates NZ! If someone in the US could help with that I would be very grateful!
