"Optional hardened bed ways" is a wild statement in itself, you would think something as crucial as the durability of the ways has to be on the top 3 of requirements, when it comes to getting a lathe.

Limiting Carbide insert types and sizes is a wise decisions. I have done the same thing to the extent I can. Very nice selection of tooling for the lathe. I use annular cutters extensively in the lathe and mill as well, it indeed a quick way to remove material.. I will have to look around for those core drills. in the larger sizes. They must be available here in the US in one form or another, I have never thought of using them for metal. They are certainly available for concrete drilling. Cheers

The tilted angle on the carriage slideway is not an uncommon feature on lathes from the 50’s through to 70’s. The idea is to better resist cutting forces, the downside is that you end up with less area. Australian made lathes Nutall and Macson both used this design.

The best modifications I did to my lathe were the solid toolpost, and telescoping lead screw covers. I see you take good care of your machines, they will still be in good condition for your grandchildren.

Happy New Year Alex. It's really good to see you back. I'm going to enjoy this. That price you quoted, seems fairly reasonable. I looked at a Taiwanese copy of a Colchester Triumph 2,000 lathe, a design from the late 60's and very popular here in the UK. That would have cost me £25,000 for a 410 x 1000 machine. I ended up with a 12 year old chinese copy for 1/3rd of that.

Most of the italian lathes have the ways with the same shape of the emco’s. MY theory for that shape is because the carriage tends to spin clockwise (top view) during the turning operation: pivot point is the tip of the tool and the force is given by the pinion.

Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. As load is applied from tool pressure from the spindle it is trying to rotate the saddle in opposite direction imparting the load on the large prism flat, not the small prism flat, good design. However when lightly loaded plus the mass of the saddle will increase the wear on the smaller way being smaller in area. I like the south bends and Hercus lathes with double prismatic ways.

Wow that is beautiful and so well looked after. I have a V10p and I love it but the Super 11 or V13 is a dream of mine. I didn't realise the V13 used different collets but I assume they are a rare and hen teeth just like the L20 series for my V10

3:48 That Bed geometry is very similar to the WMW DLZ Lathes from East Germany. Except that they use a second 45 Degree Prism on the other side where the Emco is flat.

Hi Alex, with all your attention to detail I wonder why you did not avoid the biggest death feature of a lathe: reaching across the chuck to touch the heidenhain or get pliers when standing in front of the carriage. With my right hand I can reach my DRO head and all the tool holders to the far right side of the tail stock and avoid getting across the chuck or rotating work. It may seem a minor point but you did spend alot of time making a nice machine better. Another handy tool is a left handed caliper where you can read the dial from the tailstock side non-inverted. When I lived near Belvedere castle I looked high and low and found very few machines or tools for sale. You got lucky finding a nice used machine.

Hab mir auch vor kurzem die Baugleiche Drehe gehohlt (Voest DA160) aber in deutlich abgenutzteren Zustand. Hab gerade die Antriebswelle neu gelagert, die Riemenscheibe leider auch total ausgeschlagen aber so hatte ich gleich das erste Drehobjekt. Zufällig schon mal wer die Hauptspindel(Kegelrollenlager) gewechselt wieviel h Arbeit ist das ca.?

I also don’t get it, why the prismatic ways ar like that. I have a Romanian made lathe . SN400 , from the 70’ has the same ways . WEILER E series have the same ways. I have a E50 form 1997 , same ways . E30 from the same era has the same ways . My dro on my machine also start whit the general button, is the best practice , but , I have my dro on the carriage… for me is a must have , maybe because my machines are larger . Same issue with the screen on the heidenhein dro . I even replaced the screen whit a aftermarket one , Chinese one , same problem. When cold you need to wait

I don't think the way configuration is a branding thing because the Super 11 is not the same. Also S11 has relatively poor lubrication access. You’d think for the equivalent of €22k it would be better since the rest of the machine is very high quality.
