Good luck popping out those cylinder sleeves. Takes a lot of heat. Probably easier to take the block to a local machine shop and let them press them out and install the new ones. Yanmar 2GM is a good basic motor. LOTS of them out there. You will be glad you decided to rebuild it. Love videos like this!

Give you a lot of credit, Billy. You amaze me with your knowledge of being a mechanic. I needed to put in a rebuilt engine in my boat. The mechanic I used didn't install it correctly and I had to sue him in small claims court in Riverhead. I won a $3000 judgement against him but it took me years to collect it. Another great mechanic installed another new engine and then I sold the boat. LOL. Good luck with your engine.

Yep, that broken piece you had in your hand looked like a piece of piston skirt. The grooves in the sleeve are the result of the wrist pin no longer being retained because something either wore out or broke. I'm not sure how Yanmar retains their wrist pins. Anyway since the rebuild is already done by this point I hope you checked all of your bearing clearances so you get another 30 years out of this rebuild. The next couple of videos should be interesting. Cheers!

Take your time and all will work out. Like how you improvise when you don't have a tool. The linners may be wet or dry. hope for wet easier to remove. Will look forward to next video.

Billy if you need help reach out. I have rebuilt plenty of marine diesels. You need to pull the oil sump off and check for metal, that chunk you found is a sign that there may be more down there. Likely a bit of piston or liner.

First off, DAMN! Nice work for tackling this project without a lot of experience and learning to do it yourself! Well done on getting all of the replacement parts you could possibly need too. As mentioned in the comment below, that is a part of the piston in the engine block which means your pistons were definitely rubbing against the inner walls of the cylinder. Interested to see the second part with the sleeve removal of a 30-year-old diesel engine that has been under a lot of heat. :-P The soot is from worn gaskets. Once you start putting this back together, if you haven't already, be sure that you don't cut corners and make sure each piece is within tolerance and that it is properly aligned. Also, hopefully, you bought the full gasket sets to replace everything which seeing the mound of parts, I am sure you did. Nice job on getting those springs compressed and the pistons removed! Those can be a pain in the arse! Came across your channel through Sailing Project Atticus and their visit to the Annapolis Boat show.

Billy get yourself 3-4 ft long piece of 3/4" galvanized iron pipe (really cheap at home depot) and use it as a breaker bar. Just make sure your socket driver fits inside the pipe. You will get great leverage. Since it is galvanized it won't rust too fast.

Big time gear head here, which made this video so enjoyable to watch. :-) Nicely done! Nothing like getting into the muck of an engine and becoming a rebuilding master. With all of the carbon buildup on your Yanmar, you may want to do some Sea Foam treatments and blow out those deposits from time to time. When you do, be sure that you're out at sea because it will smoke like crazy and will disturb your harbor mates (and likely result in a scolding from the authorities).

after 30 years this is actually not much carbon, the seats look good too .sometime people are afraid to rev-up some to let the engine puke the deposits but it is something that has to be done ,just like changing the oil it is part of the process. BTW Billy might get away with his rebuilt but it is by cutting many corners certainly not by mastering much anything . Sorry I have to give him credit ,yes he is a master of hard work ,no matter the abilities hard work is 99% of the job.

Billy the valves looks ok, it's the part that set's is what you want to pay close attention to. In your situation clean clean is key. In my day they called it rubbing compound which is used to resurface the valves set's and matting surfaces in the head. As for the lower part of engine, that piece you found in oil pan is not a good sign. It's part of a piston. So your on the right path by getting new ones but mic up the bore if you plan on cutting out the gouge in wall of bore. If not be damn sure gouge is smooth before putting back together. When putting back together, again clean clean clean, then lub, lub, lub,. Then be damn sure everything I mean everything is torqued to spec. You should be fine as a simple overhaul. While you're at it I would mic the crankshaft and replace all bearings. Be careful on lower half making damn sure all parts go back exactly as they came out and I mean exactly as they came out. (This is an overhaul not a rebuild, there's a difference)This is very important on lower half Billy. Most auto part stores have a simple inexpensive system that will tell you what size bearings you'll need. This is how it works.(BEFORE YOU TAKE CRANKSHAFT OUT) in fact, on most engines bearings can be replaced without removing the crankshaft! It's a small wax like piece that's placed on the crankshaft where the caps go.(between cap and crankshaft) Then torque to spec, then remove cap again. At this point the wax like part will have spread. The kit comes with a gauge which tells you what size bearings you'll need, simple. Now Billy, write down each size bearing needed because it's a good chance they will not all be the same so write it down Billy. Do this and you will have a successful engine overhaul.

It appears that the cylinder liner was scarred by the piston wrist pin. Good job on getting all the replacement parts ahead of time. If you are going to do a deep dive into the engine you might as well renew everything that wears. Getting the old cylinder liners out might be the most challenging part of the rebuild.

Freeze the new liners it should help the install by shrinking them. It helps with many press fit parts that are metal

If I'm honest I'd load that block and head into the dinghy and take them both to an engine rebuilder. There's a lot of risk involved in reassembly without the usual machining requirements for a complete overhaul, I'd definitely be paying a lot of attention to the crank on this one, I'm pretty convinced that it will need to be, at the very least polished and balanced, more likely the journals ground and oversized mains to suit?? Might even be out of alignment/warped due to bearing failure. Whatever the case it is at least a complete rebuild, including oil pump water pump and clearing the crudd out of the head and block's cooling ports without machining, at worst, all of the above + boring out the old sleeves, fitting and honing the new sleeves, skimming and pressure testing the head and grinding the crank, all of which I'd be inclined to do regardless

@@SoundzAlive1 could be, regardless it's not a good sign, it would be pretty obvious once you took the bottom apart! I'm not there and not Billy, nothing's been filmed in that area so we'll wait till next episode I suppose. Either way with what came out the sump and the scoring on the sleeve, and all the bits of ground up steel that have been circulating around the engine are going to have @#&$ed up almost all running surfaces, oil pump blah blah. I've done enough industrial mechanical engineering and machining to know that there will be damage everywhere that those wee ground up particles of steel be it piston collar or bearing have seen circulated. It will never be right unless all that is sorted properly. PS I'd love to have seen what the oil filter and sump pan looked like😂😂😂

they have a liner puller that makes it easy. head has 2 legs that sit on block and 2 legs go into cylinder and hook under lip of cylinder on either side and you turn a bolt and it cranks right up out of there., I used them on big cummins diesels. like you I am excited to see how Billy accomplishes things. I really give him credit on things he tries to accomplish himself over the years.

There is a difference between doing hay-wire repairs when you are stranded and you have no choice and being in town and refusing to at least do a proper shop cleaning of the engine with fluids and air pressure and a few other basic checks.It is in my opinion pure stupidity or ego out of control,we all know it is not to save a few hundred dollars.

@@callmepokey1 there is so much inconsistencies in that rebuilt that I call fraud ,you will see that the guy remove the sleeves with a screw driver taping one side at a time (misaligned force if I can say) I do not believe it possible, but my main concern is the cleaning of the engine :the very inside of the water jackets to bare shiny metal, how on a boat with barely a bucket and a tooth brush,come on!!! not a view on the crank shaft reinstall either.

Good on you to rebuild that engine. It's definitely a task you can handle if you do your research and have some mechanical ability. Go slow and double check everything. Buy or borrow a torque wrench. This is one job where "that feels right" doesn't cut it. Hone those cylinders and lap those valves.

Very important. In order to get the piston rings to go down into the cylinder without bending or damaging the rings. You need a piston rings compressor tool that allows you to completely compress the rings that will allow you to tap the pistons into the cylinders without damaging the rings. That's a very important tool. Great job to the both of you.

Billy, the tool you're going to need to install the pistons into the cylinders is called a piston ring compressor... looks kinda like an oil filter wrench.

If you've done some research you probably already know this but if the block will fit in the oven it'll save you tons of effort. Getting it hot is key but otherwise it'll just be wood blocks and a mallet. I'd prefer a machine shop with a press though. Kudo's for tackling this and you're smart for rebuilding it while it's apart(you could probably get away with new rings/sleeve).

I’ve also found if you heat up stuck hardware with a heat gun or plumbers torch a little bit NOT RED HOT then add the penetrating oil it helps it to wick the oil in faster.

I did not see new piston rods, push rods ( these are probably bent)!!! I never heard of sleeved cylinders but guess it’s easier than having cylinders re-bored with larger piston rings (usually bored .030 over. Cam shaft bearings? Crank bearings. Do you have them? They have to be pressed in and out. Hope you have a torque wrench and specs for all the parts. They all have a torque specification and it’s extremely important to tighten everything properly so you don’t experience large quantities of grief later!!! Spinning a bearing would really suck!!! Good luck Billy! Take your time! Do not rush this job. If you have questions, get answers from qualified mechanic. Do not guess anything! I have rebuilt six engines over the years. The first one did not go well! It made a good run then spun a bearing ! I hate when that happens! Other five re-builds went well. I am not a certified mechanic! I just did not have the cash to pay for the job. You can do this. Just be certain to have the manual for that engine and read it well and follow all the specs precisely. It helps if you can have someone there with some experience be there with you.

That bit would be part of the piston skirt, but I’m sure you’ll know that by now! Looks like the Gudgeon pin has been going side to side causing those marks in the bore. You need a puller to get off the pulley, not the other way around......! 😋You need to Mark your injection pump timing before you pull it apart, but I’m sure you’ve learned that by now, spill timing is always the back up! Great job. 😎🇦🇺

FRICKIN Weedeaters, totally agree finicky little bastards. I broke down about 8 seasons ago and invested in a commercial grade Echo model. Haven't done a thing to it in 8 years other then add fuel and line, starts everytime (loves its choke). Hope to get 10 years out of it and then simply trade it in on a new one. LOL, hate the weedwacker .....

I was going to call this a 10-day job initially but after looking at the internals I'm somewhat more optimistic about the needed timeframe and now believe this will take a total of 7 days to complete.

That was so well done and remember you have to re-seat the tappets if got some grounding paste or spin the Tappets in the holes by keep rubbing them back and forth clockwise and anticlockwise in the seating place they must fit the same hole do not switch holes for the tappets when seating them. The reason for grinding them in is an exact fit to seal the holes they go into. It takes time at least 30 mins each tappet to re=seat unless have the right tools then ten mins. Do not cheat using a drill as can over do it.

make sure you use some sort of assembly lube when assembling the engine. I use STP oil treatment and a brush and a rag. Also before installing your pistons make sure you stagger your rings before installing piston and a hose clamp can make a great ring compressor for getting those piston back in . Nice Job using the rock and the stone there.

Use a small spray bottle to "mist" in a little fresh water in the intake while the engine is running at working temp. This will react with and clean the carbon buildup inside the combustion chamber and intake and exhaust ports & valves.

I am full of admiration for people who tackle projects like yours, even when they are almost complete novices. It's that sort of gutsy determination and self-belief that makes you a resilient sailor. Well done! Is that Yanmar a 2QM15? (looks like it, but they were manufactured in the 1970s) Make sure you stagger the rings around their grooves so the gaps are not all in a line. This will reduce the amount of blow-by when the fuel, air and exhaust are at high pressure. The Yanmar manual will provide the required detail.

Hey Billy, that chunk of steel you found in the sump/oil pan looks suspiciously like a piece of a main bearing, that would also explain the scoring in the sleeve, check the crank journals very carefully for damage, you may have to get it ground, polished and balanced. I'm pretty sure that you will have to get the block rebored, or at least honed, and the head skimmed and pressure tested. Make sure to align your timing chain correctly, torque all bolts in accordance with manufacturers sequence and re-torque after running the engine for at least 10 hours, it must be at operating temperature to do final torque. Unless the head bolts are stretch bolts in which case torque once when cold PS connecting rod/ con rod connects to piston using gudgeon pin. Some more mechanical jargon for you.
