A common issue with Yanmar Marine Engine panels is that they lose their LCD engine hour readings after a few years. As this is not a commonly serviceable part you are faced with either installing a new panel at $800 and resetting your engine hours, or adding a new engine hour meter, which is a clunky fix.
There is however a simple $30 fix which with few tools will have your engine hour meter back and running after an hours work.
The link to the part is here:
www.akspeedo.co...
The website states that this should also work for Volvo LCD panels.

This worked amazingly for me on my Hanse 375 with a Yanmar 3YM30. I did not want to lose the count of hours on my engine. Thanks to you, I did not and I now have my display working again. Very helpful video. Much appreciated.

I hope one day I’m able to anchor nearby and make/buy you dinner (and drink) to repay you for your generosity. Taking the EXTRA time to film, edit and share this video is absolutely amazing!! I ordered the part and followed your instructions and it worked like a charm. Bought a boat a year ago and have never known the real engine hours until now! Thank you! Thank you!

Thanks so much for this video. I couldn’t get mine off from the front as it’s glued in on the face. So I climbed in the lock and removed it from the back by undoing the 4 very small screws. I ordered the LCD board from the link on your video. Then not having the confidence to fit the LCD, I took it to my local phone repair shop, where it took him 20 mins. He charged me 15 euros. And it’s all working perfect now. Thanks again for a fantastic video.

Excellent video as always - thank you! If I may offer a suggestion I picked up from The Boat Galley: always stuff a rag in any cockpit drains or scuppers before you start to unscrew anything in the area. I think I spied a drain right under the panel as it was first being unscrewed (it may not have been a drain). Hopefully this helps someone somewhere avoid a lost screw. Cheers!

A magnetic tray works really good to keep screws together
@pbristow
@pbristow 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnnylasalle130 that's a great suggestion but 300-series marine stainless is weirdly not magnetic. I don't understand the physics of it since iron and nickel are both magnetic. But it's one more annoyance with boat work that magnets don't hold screws and other parts. In fact a common way of checking "stainless" parts for quality when in a store is to run a magnet over them. If they're magnetic then they're probably just coated in a thin layer of stainless.

A really easy fix for a potentially expensive pain in the rear. Things I would add to the tutorial. 2:46 Stick a rag in the cockpit drain holes, good luck getting that item back once it has gone down one 7:29 if you are working alone you can give the ribbon connector a gentle curve by rubbing it around a pen or pencil, be gentle. This will give it a slight curve that will let you more easily guide it through the opening for the replacement LCD.

Thanks mate! I'd say this should be done by someone with some familiarity with working on small electronics. Remember to keep skin oils off any electronics or contacts, and or clean any oils, oxidation, etc., from them later with solvent like high purity isopropyl alcohol. It's really important to keep electronics dry, clean and especially free of salt water, which can damage them. Especially any exposed metal and especially metal contacts. That's why there's so much environmental sealing designed into the case, etc. Keep fingers off all contacts, including the ribbon cable contacts. Or use degreased gloves. I can't overemphasize how useful it is to teach prospective boat owners how to do some of their own maintenance. This greatly increases their chances of success, reduces barriers to entry, and lowers operating costs since less work needs to be outsourced. In addition it's certainly less wasteful and more environmentally friendly to repair something than to throw it away and replace it.

@@sailingrubyrose It´s probably just to really secure the ribbon connector from coming loose due vibration and so reducing product returns when still under warranty. Worst case you have to open the thing up again and refit it if it ever gets loose. But now you know how to do it and there is no "silly putty" in the way ;-)
@LoanwordEggcorn
@LoanwordEggcorn 3 жыл бұрын
@@Gpcas9 Agree. It's probably there to hold things together in the face of vibration. In other words, to lock the ribbon cable clamp down. Some kind of electronics safe rubberized glue could work.
@FrankConforti
@FrankConforti 3 жыл бұрын
As mention before, sealant is used to hold the flex ribbon in the connectors. They are very susceptible to vibration as there is no mechanical hold between the ribbon and the connectors, only friction. In fact, you may have gotten away with simply removing and reseating the cable first before replacing the lcd display. I have repaired many an electronic device by simply doing that with a quick wipe of 90% isopropyl alcohol, put a bit of hot glue on the connector and ribbon cable. Fun fact, isopropyl alcohol easily removes dried hot glue by breaking the bond between the hardened glue and the components. Magic.
@Gpcas9
@Gpcas9 3 жыл бұрын
@@FrankConforti Nah, I think vibration got the better of the ribbon cable by breaking the fine and brittle leads over time. The putty keeps the cable in place but also gives it a place to stress the cable right where the putty ends. Do it like HAL. Change it when it breaks. Dont bother with the Putty. I'm sorry Dave 😏
