EM, you need a bigger thump keg! lol Instead of a tiny pint jar, use a 2 quart jar and only fill it about 1/4 full. That way there's a lot of volume for the particles to drop back through. Also, an inline filter like a gas filter would filter out fine particles and absorb some moisture on the paper element. You could also put a molecular sieve column (mol. sieve) to really dry the air prior to your vacuum pump. And you should go to the pump website (Gast or whomever) and see if they have an exploded assembly view. Could probably reorder parts as well. Great job and a good tutorial video.

Regarding your jar with water and carbon for filtration, I built one about fifteen years ago, but used a 30 gallon drum. To minimize excitement inside the drum, I used a 3-M floor scrub pad with a hole for the pipe that went down into the water. It made a great baffle.

Venting to the crankcase could also be for cooling as well as as muffling the noise, since vacuumed air tends to be cooler than ambient.

I know this is a seems a little pricey at $319.99, but it's well worth the cost. The eBay seller Deschem sells this vacuum pump "110V,180W,Circulating Water Vacuum Pump,Two off-gas Tap,US Plug" under that description.--search for model SHX-IIIB-180 I'd post the direct link, but I don't want my reply black-holed by KZbin for posting a link. Deschem is reliable as hell as I've done business with them for years now and they've always made good on their promises. I've had a few things arrive broken from time to time, and was missing a stainless steel spoon one time, but never once had any issues with replacement. They sent me two stainless steel spoons for the missing one. Anyhow, that vacuum pump pulls 28.5" of mercury which is about as close to a full vacuum as you are going to get AND, you can just suck water right through the system since it is a dual aspirator type. I've shown it running briefly in a couple videos before. You only need that pump. No cold traps or drying apparatus of any kind and it's quiet as hell.

Sound reduction and venting to crank case: if you still want to stop venting to crank case and keep noise reduction, maybe you can make a diaphragm to prevent crank air mixing while still reducing pressure pulses.
@angelaabrams91085 жыл бұрын
It looks like a diaphragm airbrush compressor with a few tweaks (directed intake pipe instead of an open air intake passed through a moisture filter and no output line). I'm just going off appearances without being able to handle it myself, but the cylinder head looks like it's tapped for an output on the opposite of the intake and able to take a block to direct the air through a hose to a tank instead of into the main body as a muffler. The cylinder has does have fewer fins for thermal dissipation than a compressor type. I'm guessing because the vacuum version is venting the hot air to shed heat while a compressor is storing air meaning the heat has to be removed a different way.
@aronbraswell15895 жыл бұрын
you could use good old jb weld to make reed valve seat recesses. all you need is a dryer second stage for your filter. Remember a vacuum pump is only a air compressor pump back wards

I'm guessing the hole is to maintain air pressure from the bottom and create a strong seal between the rubber and aluminium. See how the metal face that sits below the rubber is curved inwards? The atmospheric air pressure would be evenly distributed over the entire rubber surface creating a strong seal between them. This is my guess.

In the future, you may want to use sodium hydroxide solution as a chlorine trap: 2NaOH + Cl2 --> NaCl + NaClO + H2O Though only once you've solved the "liquid getting sucked into the pump" issue. NaOH solution would eat up any aluminum in there.
