Always use the ring end not open end to undo stuff, you will get better grip on a stuck fastener.

This was an entertaining watch but served to remind me of what a miserable past time working on old engines is. As I get older I become more convinced that rather than try and mend old stuff its better to spend enough cash to buy a decent bike and spend free time riding it. Thanks for posting Andy

It's a bit late now but a good tip would be to measure the valve clearances before you took the cams out. If any shims need changing you can put the correct ones back in when you put it all together. As it is you'll have to put it all back together then measure and may then have to pull the cams out again. You'll have fun putting those tiny collets back in. Trust me!

@@BikesofRye We learn best from our mistakes! I just had my ZX9r off the road for four months due to me not checking my shims were all in place after doing valve clearances and a head gasket change. The only exhaust shim I didn't change must have shifted while the head was off, after starting it, it caused a collet to jump out, luckily just one. That was just the start of the bad luck though, four of the cam cap bolts are stretch bolts and one snapped, had to drill it out, clean thoroughly and get new bolts. That is the other thing, as parts of the camshafts are under tension, you should be much more careful removing those cam caps, if the camshafts don't come up squarely, you risk cracking them. They are matched to the cylinder head, so a snapped camshaft cap means whole new head.

And not to use pliers to remove the buckets. Use a magnet, thus avoiding any damage.

I commend your efforts on the task your undertaking. My only advice is to use the same platform that your putting your content on to research any thing that your findings problematic. So many videos on removing exhaust studs etc. Good luck with the rebuild

One thing I noticed that many people don't know.... Open ended spanners are made to be used in one direction *if at all possible*. Look at an adjustable spanner - the 'fixed' jaw should be on the far side from the direction you are pulling, the 'sliding' jaw on the nearest side to the direction of (desired) rotation. Apply that picture to using open ended spanners, and you have less chance of rounding off tight nuts, because the larger jaw is stronger and doesn't flex so much! But you are a star my friend; as soon as you said you were going to drill out a stud, I thought it may go wrong - not because of your skills (far from it), but because in my 50 odd years of messing about with bikes and hanging about with people who mess about with bikes, the ratio of "I ended up with the hole offcentre' or 'the drill broke off' as opposed to 'it all went well and the stud is out' must be about 100:1 !!! Keep going mate, we're all rooting for you!

Weld a nut onto the stud, heat the stud up red hot with a plumbers torch, then ratchet the bugger off, heating up n cooling fast will also help !

Exactly the same thing happened to me last year. Even got the same valve spring compressor. Get the head skimmed, new head gasket and new head bolts as they stretch. Lap the valves in as well, you can pay someone to do so but it's about £15 per valve..... You are doing well, especially for someone who is basically a novice. We don't all start out as experts.....

Well done and good luck with the rebuild, measuring shims under buckets is a mathematically challenging task that made my brain melt! I am sure that you will make it look easy though.

Mapp gas is better for heating things up. Why removing the valves? Broken drill bits can be removed with spark erosion methods. Quick tip when drilling out studs,use a mains powered drill it's faster,and use calbalt drill bits. Cut the studs flush with the surface ,then centre punch the stud,this helps the drill bit to find center and not run off to the side...

Great video. When you come to re-install the valves, put a dab of multi purpose grease on the valve collets. It will help keep them in place, otherwise it is a real pain.

Great work on the bike, had the same problem with my Cbr 900, I didn’t break a drill bit in it though, but an engineer friend came round and was able to sort it, he drilled it and then re tapped it, he done it in 3 stages, don’t ask as I’ve forgotten the technical terms he used 😊😊😊, 20,000 still going strong, but I feel your pain, well done on the bike progress 👍

you should slacken the cam bearing cap bolts progressively on each cam so it gradually rises from head bearing surface along the whole cam . taking them off one at a time can damage the bearing face as the valve spring pressure on released end tilts the cam up digging into bearing surface edges there is clearance there for oil that it spins on remember its not held tight in there. goodluck with the snapped drill .

hello mate, good series. As a bit of advice, would be worth in investing in some left handed drill bits, they work in reverse and are ideal for extracting stubborn bolts/screws. Hope this helps. Safe riding.

Roasting each seized exhaust stud with a blow lamp, shocking it with cold water, then roasting it again and whilst still hot, tighten it fractionally before loosening it is the method I use and it hasn't failed. Vice grips on the broken stud should still remove it.

Just started watching your vidoes. CR one first. Not sure if anyone else has said yet but you need a set of JIS screwdrivers for all these japanese bikes otherwise you will round the screws off. They are not phillips or pozi drive👍 I have a few 2 strokes😎

Love the channel and admire your efforts etc, I am a ex pat UK and miss how small everything is over there (cars , driveways etc) Good on you having a go, advice time.... buy some decent quality tools. I know the idea of the channel is "some dude on his driveway" but trust me that will get old for you very quickly, get a lift and some good quality tools and you'll have much more fun and progress, those exhaust studs for example get a Mac XMSR1 kit and you'd have had them out in 10 mins, no one wants to waste time when there is a tool for the job. No shade, you're doing epic, just been there and done that and know the right tool makes the work a pleasure.

Wow.....what a pain in the arse that's been. Have the tee shirt though....a few years ago but the exhaust studs were every bit as hard to remove LOL always found it easy taking engines apart....it gets tricky putting them back together but that's the rewarding bit. Good luck.

Easier to turn the engine without the sparkplugs. And use a magnet for the buckets next time. To remove and install valves I recommend the "Lisle" removal/install tool and bin that old spring compressor. No struggling to install the keepers later

Hell no, I’d of just got another engine😢. I did the same as you on a bandit 1200, took me days, tried welding extraction everything, I turned to Whiskey in the end. Got the bloody thing out though. Never ever again

Hi mate. If you are checking the valves clearance you do NOT need to take the head off. They should be checked with the cam in. Not sure what you are doing. But I wish you the best 😮.

If you have a bit of stud left then cycle heat and plusgas over a couple hours. Be gentle and it will come out

Copper slip! use it on every bolt you take off, then you wont have any stuck bolts ever again 👍

Also, dont just rely on shim numbers, you still need to measure the shims even if there isa number. Let me send you a software program I wrote that calculates new valve clearances, you can then compare with results yoy get doing it your way 👍

breaking that drill in the stud is a major sin. you need to learn the correct way to do things first mate. you should've measured the valve clearances before you ripped the cams out. your wife is a star by the way.😄
