You can rub a super magnet on your screwdriver to magnetize it.......OR .....wrap a wire around and around it and touch the ends to your + and - on the battery............Z

The brushes go on ONE way, make sure you don't install them backwards. One side of the "brush box", if you will, has a pronounced raised step, approximately 1/8 inch high, on the side closest to the shaft. the other side of the brush box is nearly flat. The side with that step on it faces "up", or away from the alternator's main body & toward the pressed tin cover that goes on afterward. the flat side faces in toward the main body. If you install it backwards, the brushes will NOT align correctly & won't sit flush on the contact points of the shaft. Be careful, it's VERY easy to install it backwards! EDIT: not all have the stepped edge, but all do seem to have a raised tombstone-shaped protrusion about 1/64 inch high on one side. The side with the raised protrusion faces in toward the alternator. the flat side faces OUT from the alternator & toward the inside of the tin cover plate.

i have the same car with a noisy alternator. do you know how to fix that? i heard something about a bearing but i have no clue on how to pull this thing apart.

A feeler gauge works wonders on putting the new brush assembly on... But, so does a piece of cardboard.. Well done my friend. And yes, you did it with one hand, but we can tell you had pre-loosened the screws before filming. Where's the troubleshooting video?

rebuilding include changinging diodes and bearings,this is half ass job like the one you buy at auto store,they don't change bearing or diodes either,that is why they have life time warranty,spending 25$ AND SELLING FOR 300$!!
@austinwade5961

ahoorakia if it works it works lmao, it really doesn’t matter as long as the car doesn’t die halfway down the road. The bearings only need replaced when it is necessary to replace them, when you can hear that they do not have enough grease in it via a grinding/vibrating noise. If you know what you’re doing you can pack the bearings yourself with new grease and they’ll work fine, without noises and you don’t have to pay for half the alternator. Slip rings are somewhat the same, you should only replace them if they’re broken or incredibly worn. If you’re not willing to salvage whatever parts you can on the alternator there is no point in rebuilding it!!!

@ ahoorakia: That's because 999 times out of 1000 it's only the brushes & occasionally the V.R. that go. The diode packs rarely burn out, & when they do it's generally because of a massive failure in either the windings or the VR. Like - *MASSIVE* .

I hear what you are saying and I get it.... But this is not a "Rebuild"........It is replacing the "Regulator and Brushes".....It is like calling, "Changing the Plugs, Air filter, distributor cap and rotor" an "Engine Rebuild"........It is a "Tune up".......He is calling more than what it is. If it was a rebuild......He would of completely or "almost completely" taken the alternator apart. No, not everything would need to be replaced but everything would at least be inspected/tested/cleaned and parts in question or had failed would be replaced or repaired.

Does the brushes have a right side up, or are they good either way? Thanks!

Too late by now, I'm sure - but, YES, they DO! one side of the "brush box", if you will, has a pronounced raised step, approximately 1/8 inch high, on the side closest to the shaft. the other side of the brush box is nearly flat. The side with that step on it faces "up", or away from the alternator's main body & toward the pressed tin cover that goes on afterward. the flat side faces in toward the main body. Yeah, the brushes on my daughter's alternator are worn so short they slipped right back over the slip rings without a shim. We'll be putting in some new ones...
