I’ve watched this Aries maintenance video several times. It’s a real pleasure to see an informative video demonstration by someone who clearly knows what they’re doing. Good on you!

I’ve just bought a Twister 28 with this exact wind vane that needs this care. Thanks for taking the time out to make this video.

I have one of the Franklin lift up pattern Aeries on my 31 ft yacht. It works well up wind but once I get off the wind a bit ie a broad reach, with a quartering sea;, it is useless unless really windy. Then it veers all over the place, but I have to use it because my raymarine AV 100 cannot cope. So in that respect it is good. I have experimented with different vane sizes & different weights. I am now in the process of making a steering oar with 30% of its area in front of the vertical stem. I will have it ready for this season. If that does not work I will dump it & make my own steering gear as I have a workshop. The bearings are all loose & the oar swings back & forth 4 times if allowed to swing on dry land. I believe the lift up version has the best bearings of all models. .

thanks for taking the time to make this video and share it. My Aries is like me, a bit stiff in the joints. I now know the cure for my Aries. Hopefully it will steer me to the tropics which will ease my own joints!

Very interesting and detailed. Thank you. Do you have knowledge of a second hand model? I intent to mount it on my berkemeyer 43. Thank you!

Very useful information, thank you for sharing. Are there parts available for these wind vanes?

Peter, you are a metal-working 'genius' with the Aries rebuild! I just found a 1978 Albin Ballad 30 sailboat with an Aries and looked up the Aries website, yesterday, to see if spare parts were available; today, I found your video. What do you charge, in US dollars, for new bushings/bearings and bottom hinge? I know that shipping costs will vary, depending on location. Do you recommend Lanacote grease for dis-similar metals to reduce future corrosion? Thank you very much for this video, and I'm sure I won't take your job, you're a metal "master"...

I've watched several times and and struggling to get the head on the ladder off or cleaned. Took the grub screw off, and then trying to remove the flat head screw, I used heat but it broke off and I've had to drill it out. There does not appear to be anything to unscrew in the front part but the round head to turn. The washer behind it turns be can't seem to make progress removing and wondering if i need to cut the washer to remove. Any suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks!

What material do you use to make the bushings?
@007rgb3 жыл бұрын
But one additional question: what material do you use to turn the bearings from? (ie. The bearings that carry the needle rollers). Is it metal or plastic of some type?
