I feel your pain... @ 15:41 when you were having an issue getting the camshaft out of the bearing...had the same exact situation on my b48g yesterday. ended up marking the bearing...which I'm replacing anyway...has to be lined up perfect or it won't come out.

You didn't show how the big rubber hose from the block to the carb came off..... Does it just pull off? That's the main reason I was watching your vid and you didn't show it....

Hi, do you rebuild these b43g engines for customers? I have one in my 318 that I would like to have rebuilt.
@mmrbeef8 ай бұрын
Sorry, no I’m not a shop and I don’t do any work for the public. I have a hard enough time getting my personal projects done much less needed to finish others! Sorry about that.
@KennyJoe018 ай бұрын
Ok, thanks anyway.

For pulling the cam at the end there is a groove in the bearing that the last lube has to set in, in order to clear the rear Journal of the cam.

I have a B48G on John Deere 420, it’s back fires like crazy when I try to start it. When it is hot, I can’t start it whatsoever and it back fires like gun shot. Does it have valve problems? Thanks.
@FishFind30002 жыл бұрын
Most likely. If your valves don’t seal the explosion from combustion is gonna leave out the exhaust or intake.

My generator is not starting I am getting spark getting gas but will not start can you advice me please
@mmrbeef8 ай бұрын
I’m pretty limited help with generators. With spark and fuel it should start unless either the air fuel mixture is incorrect or the spark isn’t timed right. If it’s a carbureted Onan engine take the air cleaner off and dibble some gas in the intake (not a ton) and see if it will run. If it does it’s a fuel amount issues. If it doesn’t it’s a spark issue. I think that is where I would start.

Will this same procedure work on a Onan b48M?

You are awesome and a savior. I tore into my p218g off of my 318 to fix an oil consumption issue. I did not expect to find an entire rebuild from start to finish on a motor very similar. These videos are priceless. It's more appreciated than you know! My only question is where you found the cam bearings? I tried to order them from Deere and they were $192/piece!??

Thanks for posting. I have a Case 1816 skidsteer with the Onan b43M motor. Vary similar to the motor in your video. I think my motor has a leaking oil pan gasket and this video will help me out. Thanks

The PTO bolts are 3/8 inch bolts not 9/16 inch bolts. The socket used is 9/16 inch.

Terrific video. I have a John Deere 316 tractor with an Onan engine. Believe it is 1987 build based on product number. I really want to keep this tractor but engine is getting tired and slow pulling up my hills. I understand rebuild parts ae hard to find so am looking into this. Very basic question, I cannot find the model number of the Onan engine i have. Onan tag has warn off but understand there is a model number stamped somewhere on the engine. Can someone tell me where I might find this model number? Sorry for such a basic engine. Thank you.

Anyone know if all onan oil pans are the same? I have a onan ack with a leaking bad welded homemade one someone used in a bolens, i would like to restore it as it is army green, have a magnet ignition as i see on aeroplanes, and shielded sparkplugs, i find it to be a funny engine to have.
@mmrbeef5 жыл бұрын
Not really sure to be honest. Onan had many many different styles of oil pans for machines.
@michaelkuzmadutton78798 жыл бұрын
The cam/ crankshaft gears that you pulled off are the ones that got the teeth broken off on ours. And I'm talking about the comment I left in the john deere 318 operation overview video.
@75superfan5 жыл бұрын
Love there videos. It actually might help me decide whether I keep my 318 or get a new one. My snow blower and mower are getting wore out and the 318 has about 1250 hrs on it. With new attachments and a engine rebuild I would be half the cost of a new one. I love these machines and they look heavier built than the new 590 I've been looking at. Not sure if I should sink much into a 1987 318 either.
@mmrbeef5 жыл бұрын
Thanks. It's always a hard decision to sink money into something that might not make sense. When equipment gets to the end of its usable life decisions like that have to be made. Several years ago (~2013) I swore up and down I would only ever own 300 and 400 series machines to do work. Clearly that has changed if you have watched any of my recent videos. I still love the 300 and 400 series. In fact I probably have more fun working on them now than I did several years ago. Mostly because there is no stress in working on them...... Any issues with buying a new or newer machine and then fixing the 318 up for fun as a project? Best of both worlds if you have the space. The X590 are good machines and will work hard.
@75superfan5 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's not an easy decision. I like the 318 and its still a great machine. I don't know if the 590 is built quite as heavy duty, but it has some nice features and would most likely get the job done. The hard part is knowing when to say when. I may do some of the work like gas lines and a ring job like your doing in this video to keep it tip top. Thanx for the reply and helpful videos !!

What would make the engine smoke on a p216 Oman besides rings
@mmrbeef7 жыл бұрын
Aside from rings there are a couple things that would make an Onan like this "smoke". First thing is using too light weight of oil. Some folks swear by synthetic oil for these engines but I have found day in and day out 30wt dino oil or dino 15W-40 is what mine seems to like the best. Because of the engine design oil can get back the valves pretty easy if its a thin oil. Other issues might be oil level too full and a couple other very uncommon. If your engine is smoking I would check the compression.

I got to give you credit on the tip to protect the journals and can with the rubber hose. Not many ppl do that!

Thanks for doing these videos. I hope you get at least some monetary compensation for your time.
@harrisonfowler44617 жыл бұрын
If I wanted to just do the rings, wouldn't I just have to take the oil pan off? Rather than removing everything you removed prior to taking the pan off? (Timing covers, valves, etc.)
@mmrbeef7 жыл бұрын
You could just take the oil pan off BUT when you honed the cylinders all the metal filings would remain in the engine and I am guessing your new rings would last less than 2 hrs in addition to all the other wear that would occur before the filter could filter all the filings. Back when I first started working with 318's I bought one that someone had apparently done what you are describing (based on the new piston and fresh rings) but almost every component in the engine had to be scraped.

Where did you get all of the oem parts from? I might rebuild my 85 316.
@mmrbeef6 жыл бұрын
You can get them from a few places. Deere has them but they are a little more expensive. Onanparts.com is a good supplier as is Boomer from Boomer's Onan. One man show and you have to call to order but a great guy to talk to about these engines.
@andrewmullin36256 жыл бұрын
mmrbeef what would it cost for a basic rebuild kit?
@mmrbeef6 жыл бұрын
It really depends on each engine. You can deglaze the cylinders and put it all back together for less than $350. Meanwhile if the cylinders are ovaled out and require machine work, oversized pistons and the like you could spend $1,200+machine work. I tear the engines down first and then decide what it needs. This method takes a little longer but in the end it saves a heap of money.

I ll make it short, in the time of the boycott and embargo against Iraq (1991-2003).we are the mechanics we had to make miracles, shortage of parts and tools.as mechanic i was fixing everything one of these things Onan 2 cylinder H type manufactured i guess 1958,the question is the alternator and the starter are one part inside the flywheel. I searched in the net about that engine .but i found nothing .before telling me that I'm crazy ,try to help me ask some old dogs
