Clutch fan blade replacement is definitely worth it. Mine blew to pieces. You can also just completely delete it. I drive my M3 in 100°F California weather with no fan clutch at all and I have yet to had a bit of cooling problems.

I'm not sure about the M3, but is it possible to use an electric fan? I delete the clutch fan at all costs on my M54 s. They do explode, and kill water pumps.
@christopho32556 жыл бұрын
There are mechanical fan delete kits going to a spall puller but A lot of people have found the electric fan conversion to be less effective at cooling both in traffic and with heavy track use. My M3 just crossed 128,000 miles and I've replaced the fan clutch assembly once.

100% he needs to remove it and just get the oem electric fan. Especially since he’s drifting it that’s what will make it touch the shroud and what not and explode

The stock oil cooler is not efficient enough for a track car. It keeps it cool with street use, but s54s make a lot of heat. I use a csf cooler which takes longer to warm up but is necessary for heavy track use

@boblast55826 жыл бұрын
those plastic bits at the ends of the rad hoses aren't meant to be separated from the rubber part. when you buy an oem replacement radiator hose, it comes with that plastic bit attached. even if you manage to take it off without breaking it, it'll either leak or break when you put the new one on.
@speeeding6 жыл бұрын
I hope you guys have better luck with the Koyorad than I did. I did a complete cooling overhaul with one, and at the track, the temp needle always creeped up to the red by the middle of the day. The problem went away once I switched back to OEM. Most M3 folks say to either stay stock or go Zionsville.

VW/Audi are notorious for using those plastic quick connect coolant fittings as well. I've had a few that leak from there and not the rubber part of the hose, so your silicone hose replacement only really fixed half the problem. But the easiest method is to just very carefully cut the band off you like you did. Just need to make sure you avoid cutting into the plastic fitting. Also doesn't hurt to check the condition of the o-rings inside the fittings as well.

I can vouch for the exploding fan. I had an E36 323is and was revving the engine at a stop. All of a sudden BOOM! and it sounded like glass shards were sprinkling down under the hood. Hood had extra lumps from the fan bits, hood lining was shredded above where the fan was, and I had to replace the radiator and some other bits. I cried for my wallet that day.

I live in Las Vegas and the summer time heat here is insane, but... I don't run the mechanical fan. This last summer was the first time attempting this and I was very skeptical when other people said that they were doing it. Well, I'm here to tell you that anything below 110f I could run the car with the a/c on full blast. Over 110 and I would need to turn off the a/c if I was getting on it or going up hills. I will be putting an electric fan in place of the mechanical this year as the condensor fan works pretty hard and if it fails... My point is that you should ditch the mechanical fan because if the bearings in the water pump start to go then that pretty new blade you put on the car can cause all sorts of sorrow. I've even saw pictures of destroyed hoods.

@vmoutsop6 жыл бұрын
Yes, the plastic fan blades will brake and cause damage but don't just change the plastic, the breaking is usually caused by the clutch locking up when it goes bad and the fan starts spinning at engine speed and that is what causes the fan blades to break. Honestly, you should go with the electric replacement, it really is a better solution.

The fans tend to explode when the fan clutches seize or a tensioner seizes. The old e34 (especially the 540i for some reason) cooling system was prone to this and the fan will even dent the hood from the impact.

Why not Electric fan? Conversion is simple stops parasitic power loss as fan spins and drags so adds HP. (Proven on engine Masters). Minimum new fan clutch. I have an E46 M3 (Love it Sooo much!) from my years of DIY repairs and scanning, reading the internet, the fan problem was not with these years or models but as with all parts and man made things there are a couple of instances where it's happened. But people (Like myself) live in different climates (Alberta) where high speed moving plastics over time get more fatigued then if it spent it's years and KM's in the states etc. So with your mileage and what you plan to do with it you probably bought a worry killer and did the right thing. (Just get those plates in the rear subframe zone LOL) Thanks for the great content.

Yes the clutch fans have been known to fail and take out radiators, water pumps etc. You would have been better going to an electric fan, which is a very common mod on the e46.
@andyfreeman40546 жыл бұрын
For the clutch fan, the clutch itself can seize. The bus noise and constant running is the symptom. It's smart you replaced the blades. I would replace the clutch as well. Electric works and adds exponential horsepower but are you willing to spend that money? The clutch fan works great though, for horsepower reason, electric will stop a little parasitic loss.
