In today's episode of Lambvinskis Garage, we rebuild one of our Dodge 318 Poly engines. You may remember this engine from a couple of different videos, well now it's all finally paid off! We couldn't be happier with how this turned out! Sit down, get a cold snack, and enjoy the video!

Those engines were incredibly smooth, reliable and torquey. I had a few back in the day. The down side was that they were heavy and large relative to the displacement. Didn't appreciate it back in the day, wish i still had it.

Thank you, we're very happy with it! 4 barrels are actually pretty rare and they're prone to cracking. The Poly Guru Gary says a Holley 350 or a Holley 500 will run just as good as a 4bbl setup.

@@LambvinskisGarage Four barrel & a Carter/Edelbrock AFB or AVS will do the trick just nicely. Try not to inflict it with that [spit spit] Holey Pox. Keep it pure. The vacuum secondaries in these ensure good driveability along with good performance. I believe that alloy single quad intakes are available, just need to look for one. Over here in Oz, these engines were exceptionally popular with the boat crowd & there was a factory marine version in my fathers 'Admirals Launch'. It was in fact the Admirals Launch from the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne, it was sold off when the ship was de-commissioned. The true "Semi Hemi's" were the Poly head versions of the Chrysler & Dodge Hemi engines from the 1950's [303? 331 & 354 Spitfire Chryslers & 241, 259 Plymouth, 270, 315 & 325 Red Ram Dodges] Gotta love all the Chrysler Corp V8 engines.

@KB10GL they're fantastic engines! The problem is getting a 4 barrel manifold, they're expensive and tough to get, especially when a nicely tuned 2 barrel will preform just as good on them. I would like to build one someday though! We have a 6 pack manifold and carbs that came from a boat that I would like to put on one someday!

The 67 and earlier chryslers had a smaller pilot hole in the crank, was a year model thing not a manual versus automatic, you may have had a 68 up trans. with the larger pilot know on the converter, incidentally a chevy guy that had worked parts for 40 something years and did mechanic work said there were differences in the 283 and 327 in the end of the crank, all makes had these kinds of things, everything on the chevroletd was not the same

@LambvinskisGarage do they make any speed parts for polys? Also, I heard one time that they align hone cam bearings on small blocks at the factory because of core shift. Whether this pertains to polys or is even true, I don't know.
@hairbag4096
@hairbag4096 Жыл бұрын
@@LambvinskisGarage if it is true, it must be because of bad machining. They have to bore the cam journals regardless.

Because truck transmissions suck. The auto is much more cruise friendly. If it was a truck you'd actually use for some work, a manual would be better.

crank snout sizes shifted a lot in the late 50s early 60s. think it was post 62 they finally standardized the sizing in the Poly's. But that causes a lot of issues when dealing with these engines. get the wrong year replacement and end up needing to do what you did here.

@@phonebackup8132 Take a look at the exhaust manifold flange angle then go look at the angle of the exhaust manifold flange on an FE and you tell me it doesn't look like it was designed by the same damn brain. Most V8 exhaust flange angles are perfectly vertical and the FE and poly have the same downward angle.
@phonebackup8132
@phonebackup8132 Жыл бұрын
@MattsRageFitGarage I have had a FE a poly and a Cleveland. I have been completely through all of them. The exhaust flanges are ansulary to the rest of the engine design, the rest of the engines particularly the FE is so different as to be ridiculous. Turn the flanges on headers for a Cleveland 90 degrees and you could probably fanagle them onto a poly.

Great video and timely too! I am about to buy a 66 Charger with a 318 poly/727. The engine is burning some oil in one cylinder? so I am told. I know you can't see the engine, but any guesses what the typical cause of the oil burning is on a 318 poly? Valve seals? bad valve... is there a common known issue? What are good sources for rebuild parts for the 318 poly? Thank you in advance.
@LambvinskisGarage
@LambvinskisGarage Жыл бұрын
It could be anything, valve seals, rings, valve itself, either way, a 66 Charger would be awesome! If you have Facebook, I highly suggest joining the 318 Polysphere group, those guys are so incredibly knowledgeable it's ridiculous! Quite a few parts interchange with a 318LA so that makes it a little better!

No, 4 barrel intakes are super hard to get! They'll do just as good with a 350 or 500cfm Holley 2 barrel! It's a very common swap, and they perform so much better!
