A year ago, we picked up a 2005 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited “LJ” complete with a 6.2L LS V8 Motor Swap, 40” Nitto Trail Grapplers, and an Atlas Transfer Case. Considering the original build was completed in 2014, it was due for a major refresh. We teamed up with Matt Thompson and his team at 3D Off-Road for a complete overhaul including custom suspension, Exterior Armor & Wheels, and Interior Cage and Seats.

In this episode we walk around our 2005 Jeep LJ and highlight the areas we upgraded and improved. We do a deep dive into the custom suspension setup from 3D Off-Road including trailing arms in the rear with Bilstein Triple Bypass Shocks and Coilovers. We discuss drivetrain improvements and walk through the upgrades inside as well including a full roll cage and custom PRP Seats. After the build walk around, we hit some trails at a local off-road park and test out the new build! Follow along for one of the most unique Jeep LJ builds out there.

Man it’s always been my dream since daddy long legs to get an lj. The more I got into suspension designs I wanted to set a trailing arm rear with out cutting the tub too so this is so cool to see someone else do it and stand by that it’s possible with no real compromise.

We just finished the rubicon and it worked like a dream! It can be done and I’m loving how it all came out. Don’t give up on that dream! And don’t be afraid to ask questions once you get into the build. 👊🏻

You’re the best, Sully! Good news - we replaced the wheels before the rubicon so they are in perfect shape for your build. 😎 thanks for always watching and supporting!

85% bought not built. He mentioned Erik Miller built the front steering geometry. This is Erik's old LJ. He did the LS swap, trans swap, Atlas, Hi-9 axles, etc etc. If Erik built it, it was built right (2x King of KOH) These chuckleheads just installed a cage, stretch armour and designed a rear trailing arm suspension. Bought not built. 👎

@@Jarod1941 That’s incorrect. Yes Erik did the LS swap with the trans, atlas, and axles, which Collin called out in the video. But this Jeep is far from “bought”. 3D Off Road reworked the entire suspension system, including custom shock bracketry both front and rear. The rear was stretched 4” and a 26 gallon fuel tank was added. Matt also redesigned the steering and lengthened both the drag link and track bar to improve steering geometry and overall steering feedback. The entire PSC steering was replaced. The old wiring harness was ripped out and replaced with a new one. They added seats, a cage, a new (actually functioning) gauge cluster. The list goes on… oh & Erik is actually proud of how the build was carried out and all of the improvements that went into it. Know the facts before slandering a build of this quality.

@@Built2Wander I'd say that "math" is a little skewed in favour of yourself, but that's no different than any Jeeper. As an example, we all think our $20,000 rigs are worth $150,000 😅

The Dakota dash looks amazing. I’m curious since the website says that cluster is for 97-03, but all LJs were after that so did you have any fitment issues?

This thing would be so nice if they did the same shock mount setup as the trail reaper, that way it can be low and still have the up travel.

Ok, I saw that you replied to me but you must have deleted it. Yes, I am joking but I now wonder if you don't see the connection in your own name. "Samuel LJ" which is a black LJ and "Samuel L. Jackson" who is a very famous black actor. I thought that was the entire intent of the name. If it's really just named after your son, so be it. It's really not a big deal either way.

"Samuel LJ"...lol! Clever but...perhaps just a little bit racist.
